I add probiotics with digestive enzymes to their food. What are you feeding?

Lovetodream88 02-11-2012 07:14 PM

The only time Callie is gassy is normally when she will not go poo because of the weather like when its raining but when shes like that its terrible she has run us from the room before. She has been eating blue buffalo wilderness chicken small breed with some of wellness grain free stews mixed in.

Well, right now I'm mixing Evangers wet and Orijen dry. It's the Orijen that is the new food. She's always had stinky farts, but this food is making it worse! Once this bag is gone we are done with Orijen!

I have friends that love blue buffalo. And there is a pet sitting place close by that sells that I believe.

Now, when she was sick, the vet was like: here give her this Science Diet. I was like, ummm, no. I will feed her boiled chicken and white rice. Do you know what's in that food? Lol the vet was dumbfounded! Hehe She said, ok, even better! Yup, I know! Learned it from YT! :D

Do you get that at petsmart?

yorkieusa 02-11-2012 07:39 PM

You might want to try some samples of the BB first. I give Kacee Natural Balance and Fromm's, however, I did add in the BB for a change with he Natural Balance and she started having gas and she hadn't had it before. I got rid of the BB. Also, keep in mind that BB has had some recalls. That is something that does make me nervous.

The thing about judging by a recall is so many human foods get recalled and most of us go back to eating them as soon as its safe. Samples area good idea though because some dogs do very well on food that others don't and others don't do well on foods others do.

What I should really do is go back to Evanger's dry. She still had stinky farts, but not this badly! I just wanted to see if anyone had doggies with NO stinky farties! LOL Other than COOKING!!! LOL :p

Speaking of recalls...years ago Diamond food was recalled. That's what my uncle fed his dog (he is still alive today). Well, one time he put the food down and Psilo would NOT eat it. My uncle did not know why!!! Then he found out about the recall! Can you believe Psilo sensed it was bad and didn't eat it?! What a smart little Mutt!!!

Bizzymammabee 02-11-2012 09:03 PM

Bubbles gets Merrick's B4 Grain and we have no stinky farts. When she poops it is solid and barely has any smell. I only feed her the dry though. Sometimes for a bit of variety I give her some veggies in it or maybe a spoonful of cottage cheese or low fat plain yogurt. I do wonder if dogs just process things differently. We have a new English Bulldog puppy and she is on the same food, her poo is stinky and she sure farts. Good luck finding something that works.

Sounds like you might need to try a probiotic. My vet gave me fortiflora when Callie was having some tummy issues and I would just sprinkle some on her food and it seemed to help. Some dogs seem to be crazy smart sometimes :)

Britster 02-11-2012 09:07 PM

Only time Jackson ever farted like rotten eggs was when he got into Blue Buffalo LOL. I hear about that a lot with that food. Evanger's has had a few issues in the past- I would steer clear of them. Orijen is a great food but sometimes too rich. Actually I do recall him having gas when he tried the regular adult Orijen a while back. We prefer Acana, same company, little bit less rich... no problems at all, we feed with great results. :)

Dog Food Industry News Headlines - Don't be Left in the Dark!

FDA Warning Letter to Evanger's Pet Food Company

FDA found NO duck in 'duck' food and NO lamb in 'lamb' food. They've had lots of FDA warnings. Kind of scares me. Certainly don't trust them. No idea what's really in the food. Label says one thing, tests say another.

If a pet is allergic to beef, and an owner specifically buys 'lamb' food, you'd really hope that food does not contain beef!

OMG that is some crazy sh!t!!! At least it's not a recall...but, none-the-less, NOT trustworthy! This is so upsetting! Now I know why their labels slightly changed! Ha! It all makes sense now! I actually happen to feed the wet Duck and Sweet potato! I'm shaking my head over here. First Whitney Houston and now Evangers. What else are you gonna tell me??!!:(

Most better brands of dog food will give you a refund if your pup has a problem with their food.

In addition to the links Brit posted, Evanger's treats have also been recalled 6+ times because they just can't seem to figure out how to keep the bacteria out of them. ..or something?

Gas is definitely not normal. I think first I'd try a food with a novel protein source in case it's an intolerance issue. If that doesn't work, then I'd be paying close attention to the protein and fat content because sometimes, some dogs don't deal well with high percentages of either.

If you don't like Science Diet, I'm guessing you don't like by-products? If not, then I'd look up the old Champion thread (around here somewhere). Apparently they also use a form of by-product, it is just perhaps more fresh than what some other companies use. It is still the remains of fish that would otherwise be sent to rendering because it's considered unedible for people. So before you go with another Champion food, it might be worth looking into.

I have also heard that about BB. It does make a lot of dogs gassy.

ETA: Oops, the recall thing was Merrick.
Evangers did have a paperwork issue with the FDA though. They had problems doing things correctly.

BLowry 02-12-2012 05:54 AM

I feed Merricks Grammies pot pie and wellness 95% chicken(canned) as a topper...not stinkies here! I was home cooking along with their kibble...I noticed they were more gassy and VERY soft poop...went back to the wellness chicken and not problems...Bentley was a little "stinker" when I switched his food....back to normal now...they do fart once in a while but....so do I! LOL

oneinabox 02-12-2012 06:03 AM

I feed mine the yorkshire terrier Royal Canin, but dog food is a very personal choice. I bought Blue, but they would literally eat around it and just pick out the Royal Canin which I was disappointed out after reading the Blue ingredient list. It's fabulous. I started doing research and saw the thing on Blue about dogs dying from the chicken one but you never know what to believe these days!! But happily, no gas and they seem to like the Royal Canin for now. I will always keep looking for something better and healthier though. Anything I can do without having to cook :P LOL

cummins 02-12-2012 06:20 AM

I feed my little 4 pound yorkie BB and she never has gas, guess dogs are just like humans different things effect different people

BabyGirl Rosie 02-12-2012 06:29 AM

Gosh it seems like so many of the foods have issues any more. It is crazy trying to decide which one. I know that there is something about TOTW but that is what is working well for Mikki. I home cook for Rosie. So far Mikki has done very well and no farting! :D:rolleyes:;)

ritapatt 02-12-2012 07:16 AM

We feed TOTW Pacific Stream (the lamb one is good too- the other two varieties have to much protein) it has probiotics and digestive enzymes included. It has been great for my 3- except for the occassional fish breath!
Abby came to us on wellness- I thought she just had bad hair, now that it has grown out on the TOTW her hair is beautiful!

Britster 02-12-2012 08:37 AM

The Champion thing is explained here, FWIW:

Quote:

Hi --------,

It’s nice to hear from you again, thank you for giving us a chance to address your concerns!

Champion Petfoods receives FRESH Walleye, Lake Whitefish and Northern Pike from the Freshwater Fish Company daily. This link Orijen will take you to our website where you can find more information on this supplier, and our Freshwater Fish. Our ORIJEN diets feature up to 45% fresh meat or fish ingredients, and a minimum of 6 different FRESH meat ingredients all sourced from local trusted suppliers-ORIJEN is unmatched in the quantity, quality and variety of the Fresh meat and fish used in our diets. All of these ingredients including our fish have been passed as fit for human consumption by the CFIA and contain no by-products.

I think that the confusion with the link that you sent comes down to terminology. The Freshwater Fish Company considers a “by-product” to be what is left of the fish after the fillet has been removed and sold into the human market. In the pet food industry a by product refers to parts of the animal or fish that would not be classified as fit for human consumption.

All ORIJEN and ACANA meat and fish ingredients are produced exclusively from animals and fish that have been passed as fit for human consumption, and all are produced in human grade facilities (no by-products, no 3-D animal parts). After the fish has had the fillets removed we put the fish rack through a process that allows us to pull the remaining meat off the carcass. It is the remaining meat and fat that we are using, a very high quality ingredient- the same fish that goes into human-grade “fish cakes”.

ORIJEN is formulated with low-ash ingredients and a very high inclusion of fresh meats, which moderates the ORIJEN calcium and phosphate levels. Bones are a rich source of Biologically Appropriate natural minerals. ASH levels are important as they affect mineral levels. Ash levels increase with the inclusion of chicken, turkey or fish meals. These ‘meals’ are made from rendered flesh and bone of chicken, turkey and fish. Rendering converts bone to ash which is a rich source of mineral. Higher protein results in higher ash. Higher ash results in higher minerals.

Our diets are moderate in ash – between 6.5% and 7.5%. This is achieved using a 2 point strategy: Our fresh meats are boneless, and our meals are prepared by removing some of the bones before rendering. This results in a very low-ash meal which maintains mineral levels that are safe for long term feeding.

We are hoping to begin offering a selection of ACANA Classic diets to this US this fall. I don’t have an official timeline right now but you can keep an eye on our website for updates. Champion Petfoods | Home

I hope this information is helpful, please write back any time you have other questions or concerns.

Warm Regards,

Bonnie

I will say that I dogsat for a pup on Orijen 6 Fish and he did fantastic, but boy oh boy, that food SMELLED sooo fishy. Which I always considered a good thing because, to me, that means there really is a substantial amount of fish in the food, but I could be wrong. Just never smelled a dog food so fishy smelling. Acana Pacifica was also stinky, but not as bad.
