Interceptor ... no longer available?? I was at the vet's this morning and wanted to get more heartworm meds for Trixie since I used up the last does a few days ago. Trixie is on interceptor, but they told me that the plant where it is manufactured has shut down due to a recent medicine recall and will no longer be available. They have the Heartguard chewables, but they are for dogs up to 25lbs. Was wondering what everyone else is using. Advice please. |
hi , i use Revolution for Oscar because that is what the Breeder was using for him . it seemed to agree with him so i didn't want to change.. |
huh, i hadn't heard about this yet so i just googled it. Seems Novartis was having issues with some of their human medications at one particular plant which also happens to be the plant that makes the heartworm pills. So they won't be available until further notice. Since this was just announced you may be able to get a script for it from your vet. this will allow you to go to another vet in town to see if they have any left in stock or you can order it online from 1800petmeds.com or similar site. |
Thank you for this thread...I just called my vet's office to reserve Interceptor for my boys. Hope you can find some or a good alternative. I hate changing what I know works for my guys. Hopefully Novartis will be back up and running soon. |
I use Sentinel. The size I use is for 2-10 pounds. |
I use Heartgard chewables and the boys love them. UP to 25 pounds means that you need to buy the next size, if your dog weighs 25 pounds or more, so that’s the amount you need for a dog that weighs 0-25 pounds. The vet assured me that the pills are very safe and a dog can eat a whole pack and not be affected. |
For those of us living in the swampy, woodsy East Coast :p, one of the things I like about Interceptor is that it protects against a lot of other worms in addition to heartworms. |

http://blog.vetdepot.com/novartis-su...m-and-deramaxx "On January 5th, Novartis sent a letter to veterinarians informing them that it was suspending production and shipments of the following Novartis Animal Health (NAH) brands including Interceptor Flavor Tabs, Sentinel Flavor Tabs, Clomicalm, Program Tablets and Suspension, and Milbemite. The letter also noted that production of Deramaxx which was just recently moved to the Lincoln plant will also be affected although the company will continue to ship that product from existing inventory." |
Wow - I thought someone had replied and posted something about Interceptor not being affected by it, but I guess it is. :( I use Interceptor now and have 4 months left so I guess we\'ll just use it for the next 4 months and then find something else. We were using before Iverhart Plus before with no problems, so maybe we\'ll go back to this. Ok, nvm, this was the post I was thinking of: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/3796719-post3.html |
Well this is nice to know. I guess I am lucky for now I got a 12 month supply when Callie got her check up in September and then when Sammy got his in November we did the same thing so hopefully by the time we need it everything will be back to normal. |
Whoa! I wonder how long it will be out of production. We use Sentinel, and I think we have about 5 months left...hopefully it will be available again by the time we run out! Agh! |
Just got my order from 1800 pet meds..maybe I will get another supply..so I will have enough. |
