Interceptor ... no longer available?? I was at the vet's this morning and wanted to get more heartworm meds for Trixie since I used up the last does a few days ago. Trixie is on interceptor, but they told me that the plant where it is manufactured has shut down due to a recent medicine recall and will no longer be available. They have the Heartguard chewables, but they are for dogs up to 25lbs. Was wondering what everyone else is using. Advice please. |
hi , i use Revolution for Oscar because that is what the Breeder was using for him . it seemed to agree with him so i didn't want to change.. |
huh, i hadn't heard about this yet so i just googled it. Seems Novartis was having issues with some of their human medications at one particular plant which also happens to be the plant that makes the heartworm pills. So they won't be available until further notice. Since this was just announced you may be able to get a script for it from your vet. this will allow you to go to another vet in town to see if they have any left in stock or you can order it online from 1800petmeds.com or similar site. |
Thank you for this thread...I just called my vet's office to reserve Interceptor for my boys. Hope you can find some or a good alternative. I hate changing what I know works for my guys. Hopefully Novartis will be back up and running soon. |
I use Sentinel. The size I use is for 2-10 pounds. |
I use Heartgard chewables and the boys love them. UP to 25 pounds means that you need to buy the next size, if your dog weighs 25 pounds or more, so that’s the amount you need for a dog that weighs 0-25 pounds. The vet assured me that the pills are very safe and a dog can eat a whole pack and not be affected. |
For those of us living in the swampy, woodsy East Coast :p, one of the things I like about Interceptor is that it protects against a lot of other worms in addition to heartworms. |

http://blog.vetdepot.com/novartis-su...m-and-deramaxx "On January 5th, Novartis sent a letter to veterinarians informing them that it was suspending production and shipments of the following Novartis Animal Health (NAH) brands including Interceptor Flavor Tabs, Sentinel Flavor Tabs, Clomicalm, Program Tablets and Suspension, and Milbemite. The letter also noted that production of Deramaxx which was just recently moved to the Lincoln plant will also be affected although the company will continue to ship that product from existing inventory." |
Wow - I thought someone had replied and posted something about Interceptor not being affected by it, but I guess it is. :( I use Interceptor now and have 4 months left so I guess we'll just use it for the next 4 months and then find something else. We were using before Iverhart Plus before with no problems, so maybe we'll go back to this. Ok, nvm, this was the post I was thinking of: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/3796719-post3.html |
Well this is nice to know. I guess I am lucky for now I got a 12 month supply when Callie got her check up in September and then when Sammy got his in November we did the same thing so hopefully by the time we need it everything will be back to normal. |
Whoa! I wonder how long it will be out of production. We use Sentinel, and I think we have about 5 months left...hopefully it will be available again by the time we run out! Agh! |
Just got my order from 1800 pet meds..maybe I will get another supply..so I will have enough. |
Thanks for posting this. I'm reserving more tomorrow. |
Wonderful. I have two pups that I cannot get to eat Heartgard. They have been on Sentinel for years. :( Guess I will call the vet tomorrow and pray they have some so I can stock up. All of my others are on Heartgard. |
Same here. My 2 are on Interceptor. Guess we'll have to switch over to Revolution. |
My vet had one box left of interceptor for Trixie's size so I bought that one. Hopefully in 6 months they will be back again. |
Dangit! Thanks for the update! I just ordered. I just switched Taycie to Interceptor from Heartguard and I really have liked the results as far as allergies go. I am not sure they are linked but its working for us! The last 3 months have been ok! I just ordered a 12 month Supply through PetCareRx.com Orders over $49 are free shipping. They have a 12 month Supply for 59.99. I found a Coupon Code for $10 Off. It worked for me!!! Code is: Jan49 This expires 1-31-2012 I am going to post a new thread so if anyone misses this they will see this:) I qualified for free shipping so the total for a 12 month supply was $49! Just thought I would pass this along! |

I called my vet yesterday and he said when they pull human meds, for safety sake they also pull the animal meds. He told me that the Interceptor I have is safe. When the problem is all cleared up, he seem to think we could still get Interceptor later on. Hope so, I have never had a problem with it. |
Thanks to the OP for posting this. My vet had two boxes left...I would have hated not being able to get it when I needed it. |
My vet still has a very good supply of Interceptor. I had 5 tabs at home already. I bought 2 boxes of 12 tabs. So, I think we are safe for a couple of years. Just call me the hoarder!:D |
Thanks for posting this. I had no idea! I only have two doses left with Interceptor... so I'm going to head to the vet tomorrow and hope they have some left. |
I just got the Boys their monthly meds, and as luck would have it, Inteceptor is no longer available. What they gave me instead, is Iverheart. I haven't seen anyone here on YT mention it when talking about substitutes. Does anyone use it? I gave it to Neo and Connor on Wednesday night, along with their Comfortis and they had problems with their tummies at all. |

On a more serious note, I sure hope the factory re-opens in the future. |
OH my! Thank goodness I just got a refill in Dec. for both boys for the next year of it. I got it at Dr.s Foster Smith. |
