Dog Food input. Hello, I just picked up a Toy Yorkie this past Friday. He's 14 weeks old and 1lb but active puppy. I've been feeding him couple times a day but he won't eat same dog food. So I tried several dog foods and now hes not eating anything! Spoke with the breeder and my vet, but they tell me to experiment. He only ate couple pebbles of dry food but nothing else today. I went through several pet food/treat -Chicken (white breast) -Natural Choice -FROMM Family -Sojos Dog Treat - couple other wet/dry food that was recommending which I don't remember top of my head. Just right now and asked for samples of dog foods from, Super Premium Pet Foods List. So I should be getting those in couple days. Should I cook for my puppy, he ate chicken with Vegetable (dog food) yesterday but he is not eating it today. Thank you!! |
Sounds like my Romeo two weeks after I brought him home. He suddenly stopped eating and refused any type/brand of pet food. My daughter did a google search and found that boiled pasta was safe to feed so we tried that and he ate. Next we boiled potatoes and cut into tiny chunks and he ate that as well. From there we experimented with raw vegetables which he also loved and so two weeks after Romeo came home, he was 13 weeks old, he was no longer eating pet food. It is scary and frustrating when they won't eat so you have to do trial and error. |
Great I'll try Pasta then to Potatoes and keep trying. I guess I need to go away from dog foods for my puppy. Do you still change food around for Romeo or he's comfortably eating same food? |
Definitely check with your vet as well as to what types of food to serve and how to prepare if you decide to go to "non-pet" food. Google and the vet are my best friends when it comes to feeding Romeo. This past summer I introduced him to burgers and steaks -- prepared at home of course and without seasonings. He will eat something for a couple weeks and after that turn up nose and walk away. I find myself "experimenting" in the kitchen when it comes to Romeo :) |
Google would not be my choice for food/nutrition advice. Many homeade diets that are not nutrionally sound and not appropriately balanced can lead to many problems later on in life. If you are looking to Homecook exclusively you need to seek out a board certified veterinary nutritionist. Also, So many choices will do nothing but create a picky eater. It can possibly be making your dog uncomfortable with an upset stomach. Find something and stick with it. Dogs, will not starve themselves and they will eat. Watch how many treats you are giving throughout the day as well.. this could also be an answer why they are not intrested in their food. |
To add to the above post. I have a dog that is extremely picky. Not only stick to one food for awhile, also we took away any chews that Gizmo had. That way the only food source he has is his kibble. He is currently on Natural Balance LID chicken small bites because he needs lower in fat. Good luck, oh the joys of a picky eater!:p |
Home cooking is not recommended for dogs under 1 year of age. You should use a puppy formula. I'd go with a small breed formula by Royal Canin or Science diet if it was my dog. Home cooking should be done for adult dogs under the guidance of a board certified veterinary nutritionist in my view. Good luck with your new puppy! |
Thank you all for your responses. Here's what Giggy went through. My Vet told me to leave the food out there for Giggy...eventually he'll eat it.... but that didn't happen. Tried several other dog food from Royal Canin, Science Diet, and etc everything I could imagine but nothing. Vet also recommended actual baby food.....tried chicken and veggies and still nothing. however he had little bit of Strawberry and Banana. After many dog food I ended up with Cesar Puppy, still he only ate chicken and beef with meaty juice He seems to like it...I fed him that couple times today and he ate it all. I'll stick with this for now. I'm just relieved that he's eating for now. thank you again for everyone's input. I'll keep everything in mind. |
Have you tried wet food? Mixing the kibble with wet? I always had a pretty picky boy but wet food he always gobbled up. It's pricier but if you are only using a bit to mix in, you don't use much, especially for a little guy. For dinner, I put some water in Jackson's kibble, a dab of canned, stir it up, and he loves it. Currently he's on Natural Balance Lamb & Rice and Weruva canned and doing very well. Btw, this Weruva canned stuff is amazing... I don't know of a dog that wold turn it down. It even makes ME want to eat it. It's like shredded chicken, it almost looks like chicken noodle soup. I agree that homecooking is great if you have the resources but it's a lot of work. It's not like just giving the dog a chicken or steak, you have to properly balance it and add proper nutrients, etc. I would just stick with a puppy food or an all life stages food. I've been really pleased with Natural Balance but they may be too low in protein/fat for a puppy. In terms of palatability, Jackson likes the taste of it best, he also loved Castor & Pollux Organix (which you can get at Petco/Petsmart) and Taste of the Wild. |
When I got Cali she was a terrible eater. She went hypoglycemic and I had to get her to eat every 3-4 hours. The one food she would eat was Cesars in those little tins. Even though it was not a good food I needed her to eat. She grew out of it and now at 6 is a little chow hound. I hope you can find something she will eat so she doesn't have any low blood sugar episodes. |

I've tried both from wet and dry, even those vegetable that you put in hot water. I'm pretty sure I stressed him out just showing so many dog foods. And the small fridge is packed with dog food right now. I was told to give Giggy "Nutri-Stat" every morning and afternoon. He loves this thing and becomes energized. Have anyone else tried this? I'm going to stick with Ceasar Puppy formula for now. I have enough dog food in fridge to figure out if he stops eating. I have more dog food sample is coming from the company as well. |
Giggy seems to be eating fine now....He's trying to eat my lab's dry food. He's eating way more than before and pooping more than 4 times a day which I'm happy. But he started to become a poop eater. I always try to pick it up before anything but it quite impossible at night. I was using Puppy Apartment for potty training but it's giving Giggy opportunity to eat...... just picked up regular cage to see if I could train him the old way. I read the other post Poop Eater but I am not sure what Giggy is missing eating? or What should I do? thank you |
