Any Royal Canine parents out there? Hello Everyone, This is officially my first post and I would like to say hello but also bring up something important. My Bolton has always been a fussy eater and when it was time to switch him to adult dog food we were fortunate enough to get a sample of the Yorkshire Terrier 28 brand of Royal Canine Dog Food. After weeks of him hating every other adult dog food he finally loved this one. Are there any other Royal Canine parents out there? Is it just a bunch of whoey, given the fact that Iams sells Yorkie blend also for a third of the price? |
my chloe eats the royal canin 29 which is the puppy blend. I had researched the fact that some yorkie's tend to be picky eaters, so I started her on this the day I picked her up. She LOVES it!! She RUNS to the bowl every meal. She has yet to have any bad effects from this food and her hair is so shiny and healthy!! |
Hi welcome to Yorkietalk! Joey eats RC and is doing really well on it. He’s been on it 5 plus years, and he never has diarrhea, vomiting, gas or excessive tearing, his teeth and coat look great. It’s specifically made for a Yorkies needs and that’s not a bad thing. Another great thing is the size of the kibble, it’s a perfect, and he chews it, instead of swallowing whole. Larger kibble is often swallowed whole, which can lead to tummy upsets. He likes it so much, I use it for training. I kind of believe it's not what you feed them, it's what you don't feed them! Avoid human processed foods like the plague. So many people pick an excellent dog food and then give them human processed food. I do also give Joey veggies and some fruits. |
I think RC is not a bad food, but I do feel it's horribly over-priced. I am always baffled when I see little 2.5lb bags for, like, $20. If it's all your dog does well on, or if you need it medically, or if you just don't mind paying huge price tags, then I say go for it :) But I do think it's over priced for what it is. There are plenty of comparable grain inclusive foods on the market with very similar ingredients that I think most dogs would do just as well on. I do think RC is better than Iams, IMO. I am currently feeding Natural Balance (pay around $13 for a 5lb bag). Been very pleased with it, as I needed a food a bit lower in fat and this one fit the bill. |
Concerning price, I buy the 10 pound bag for around $35.00 so it figures out to about $3.50 a pound. The bag it comes in is one of the best on the market, it's the only one I found that doesn't fall apart. I keep about a weeks’ worth in the kitchen and store the rest, just squeeze excess air out and seal. Don't forget to squeeze the air out; this is what causes food to go stale. Keeping a dog food in it bag is even better than Tupperware containers because they have several inches of air/moisture on top of the food. |

ZoE started out on RC mini babydog, then RC yorkie puppy 29 and now at 10 months old is on RC YT 28. She's done great on RC, has no issues & is a very healthy pup! A bag here is only $16-18 (depending on where I shop) and lasts her two weeks. She also gets treats of apple, carrot, peas, etc. So in total it's less than $10 a week to feed her well...I think that's a great deal :) |
I agree it's very expensive, but if you look at all the health problems you don't have, if you have to go to the vet with each problem....you've saved money. You are what you eat!! IBS....digestive issues.....skin and coat issues, itching...hot spots.....gas....teeth issues....many things...... Now I do realize no matter what sometimes your dog gets sick....that's not what I'm referring to in this statement. |

I'm very happy with my $13 bag of food lasting a month or a little more for my 16lb dog with great results. :) He currently has no digestive issues, skin or coat issues, itching, hot spots, gas or any of that. He had one pancreatitis episode from fatty human foods but otherwise always been very healthy. There is no one-perfect-food and every dog does differently. But I just think a normal healthy dog could thrive just as much, if not more, on a food that is cheaper and IMO has better ingredients. I wouldn't hesitate to feed RC if it was the only thing keeping my dog healthy and thriving. Actually we use RC RX kibble as treats that we have left over from Cathy here on YT :) |

Teddy has been on this food - love it. It was recommended for him by a board certified vet nutritionist so I know it's a good food that passed her scrutiny. It's cheaper than the Rx diets I feed the others and definitely much cheaper than home cooked food. He never has gas, diarrhea, vomiting, runny eyes, etc. His coat is shiny an his breath and teeth are good. I am very satisfied with this food as an alternative to the home cooked food I feed my dogs. |

If your pup is doing well on this food, there is no reason not to feed it. I'm not really into breed specific foods (although there could be a little bit of truth to it). I'm more into size difference. For instance, the calcium levels and such for large breeds are going to be different for small breeds. I couldn't tell you why RC is so much more expensive. My suspicion is that part of it has to do with their method of QC. They also do trials and have some staff that would have to be paid well. I would pick a quality food that your pup does well on and stick with it. If we are talking about an averaged sized Yorkie, price shouldn't make that much of a difference. My girl's food is just over $3/lb and I think it's a 6.5lb bag that lasts 30-45 days. That's like $20 a month or less! |
Betty, Mostly everyone I meet asks about his name and it's very funny to some and a bit silly to others. Since I grew up with Yorkies I could only imagine getting another one at the time we were ready to adopt him. The only rule was that if my finace gave into getting a Yorkie he could pick the sex and name. Well, of course he is a little boy and named after my finace's favorite singer Micheal Bolton.....PAUSE FOR LAUGHTER......(he grew up listening to him and his mom loves him, yadda yadda yadda). Of course I didn't mind because this was first Yorkie since the passing of my last one in 2001 at the ripe old age of 18! I hope you guys don't think we are nuts! |
Betty, When it was time to get another dog, after my last Yorkie pasted away in 2004 at the ripe old age of 18, my fiancé and I wanted two separate dogs. He was not fussy but asked if he could pick the sex and name if we were to get a Yorkie. I, having grown up with them (dating back from great-grandma, grandma and mom) of course agreed to anything to another baby. SO, of course we got a little boy named Bolton, named after my fiancés favorite singer Michael Bolton.......PAUSE FOR LAUGHTER........(He basically grew up with his mom loving Bolton and yadda yadda yadda). I think it's hilarious because EVERYBODY who meets him asks me about his name. I hope you guys don't think we are completely crazy! I swear we're not. |
Oh, I do LOVE the bag!!! lol. Isn't it ziplock? I used to love Nature's Variety because it had a ziplock bag, it was so convenient. I liked Acana's bags too. |
Ladybug has been eating RC since she started solid foods. My sister in-law told me that's what she had been feeding the litter so I stuck with it. She's almost 15 weeks and she loves the food and we haven't had any issues. She's happy so I'm happy! |

Welcome to YT! Our new baby Yorkie eats the Royal Canine 29 Puppy Formula too. She doesn't eat too much though. IDK if it's because she is a puppy or if she doesn't like it. The breeder recommended that kind and had her on it beforehand. I'm going to talk to our vet on Friday to ask about nutrition and such. |

I hate to be a party pooper and Rusty loved, loved, loved, RC, but he had mysterious itchy skin, and it was the RC....it happens to a few Yorkies. If you search the archives in the food section you can find the topic. It is a good food, but very expensive and the weight is so low............. |

The breeder started her puppies on RC and I continued it with Copper. It has worked out well for us. When I switched to the adult formula, I had some yo-yo try to talk me into a "healthier" brand...we tried it with very bad results...I went back to RC and eventually went to their adult formula. Copper eats it, is healthy and happy. It is a little pricey, but at Petco every 10th bag is free or is it the 11th bag? Anyway, it lasts a while because Copper is a small dog. I'm happy with RC and unless there is a problem will stick with it. Hope this helps.:) |

Basil and Caper, 11 months, were on 29 and have been on 28 with no problems at all. It is expensive, but their bag lasts longer than Carlo's 35 pound bag of Nutro Senior Large breed. They like it, no problems, and if I have to, I will cut off Marge buying any new shoes in order that the brothers eat well! |
Roxi was on the Royal Canin Puppy and did really good on it. When she went in for her spay, we discovered that she has mild liver disease. So now she is on the prescription Royal Canin (hepatic) and still loves it. I love the ziplock bag. Obviously being prescription, it was quite high, but Roxi is only 2 lbs 12 oz, so she doesn't eat alot. The surgeon wanted her on Hill's l/d, but it only came in a 20 lb bag and was a larger kibble. My vet was able to get the prescription Royal Canin in a 6 lb bag and it is a smaller kibble. So Roxi and I are both happy. |

Nancy, the surgeon feels that there is no need for any additional supplements at this time. Her MVD is so mild that he would actually be OK with her being on normal adult food (Roxi will be 1 in November). The adult food has less protein than the puppy food and since she has shown no symptoms of liver disease (other than her bloodwork) is why he said he felt she would be fine on the normal food. He would like to have her bloodwork checked before we change food and then after we change food to give us a better idea of which is better. I think he is trying to save me money, but I don't have any problem keeping her on the prescription low-protein food. She really doesn't eat that much and she has put on 9 oz. since we switched her over (I'm still trying to get her to 3 pounds;)) |
