That is just terrible. I don't trust the ER vets as much as my regular vet but I can not even imagine not trusting my regular vet. That is a hard call. I hope Ladyjane sees this thread and can give you some advice. As far as right now, I would pull the food and let the pup's tummy rest. I would be glad to send you some of the I/D food to sample if you would like. Just PM me. I have can and dry both. I am just not sure if it has chicken in it or not. But we could find out. It really has worked for Rosie. Also, do not give treats or anything else. I do understand your frustrations. I don't know anything about the Zantac. Hopefully someone here will have some experience with that as well. It will be very important that the pup does not get dehydrated. Is Harley drinking water? Keep a check on his gums to make sure. Again, I am so sorry. I would start looking for a new vet ASAP!

Yes he's drinking, gums are good. I also have a bottle of pediatric electrolytes which I offer him to drink if he doesn't drink them I syringe them when he's sick so that he also gets other good stuff for him. Just gave a dose of Hi-Cal too. He just got up looking for food, so in an hour I may offer simple rice.

I think I can buy the science diet at a vet down the road (one I don't use), but I'm pretty sure the ID has chicken, or something from chicken in it. I was considering one of their other diets, but there are so many to choose I've narrowed it down to three, and can't tell which is best for him. I've been asking around about this vet clinic and have heard very mixed reviews. I'm considering this as a possible new vet, but am unsure so far. I figure if they sell the food at least they should be able to tell me which to pick.

Ok well I called the vet (the one I'm considering leaving) and she at least gained a bit more of my trust.

She finally admitted that he clearly must have a chicken allergy. I told her now that I've tried the Medical and now want a new option. I asked her about science diet. and she actually admitted that despite the fact that they don't sell it at that clinic, she liked the diets. She then looked on the computer while I talked with her and we picked a food together. I sent the bf to another vet to buy the DD salmon and potatoe diet. She told me to keep giving him the Zantac, and hopefully this food will settle.

I have a bit more faith now that this is a kibble, he really hates dry foods. I hope it works. She told me he may have to go on steriods if he doesn't get better. I need to really gain my trust in this woman before I agree to take her recommendations. but she did say that on the insurance forms she would be marking the diagnosis as IBS and not GI so this may also fix my insurance.

I feel good, lets just hope for a good next few days on the new diet so that I don't need the steriods.

Maybe he is allergic to meat protein? I've had success with pumpkin as well. Also my doctor says IBS is a syndrome which is by definition a collection of signs and symptoms known to frequently appear together but without a known cause. IBS has such a huge range of symptoms from constipation to diarrhea to just pain. That being said, a lot of things get shoved into this category because the doctor can't get it figured out, and things often get missed after diagnosis because they see "IBS" when it could be a bowel obstruction. I would definitely get a second or third opinion, and see a specialist too. I'm sorry youand your baby have to go through all this.

Well the first 24 hours on the D/D has been good. :D Fingers and toes are crossed hoping for a good week! Even his first poop after being on this food has been good, soft, but it actually looked like a poop, that's a good sign.

Today he was much more like the dog I had three months ago, he was zooming around the apartment, jumping on everything, and considering how little he's been eating, I'd say he ate between 1/8-1/4 cup of food today. Hopefully his appetite keeps building, and that he can actually stomach this food. Let's all keep willing him to be better.

I'm happy to report that we're still doing good on the D/D. Yesterday he terrorized us in the livingroom, much like his old self, jumping on us running around :D. He's started to put a tiny bit of weight on too. I'm going out to buy a food scale that can accurately measure him today, got one yesterday but it was too small even though it would weight him, he didn't fit on the scale. Also it must be because he hasn't been getting treats, but this is the first time I've EVER gotten him to do tricks for kibble. Yesterday I started trying to teach him to climb on the scale and he took the kibble and worked for them as treats.

I'm going to start weening the Zantac off tomorrow, lets all hope that this transition goes well and the poos stay hard. I really don't want to have to give him steroids.

I would recommend you look in to a brand of food called Wellness Simple Solutions. It has one unique protein and one carb.

Made specifically for food intolerance.

Duck and rice& salmon and rice are 2 of the formulas, with no extra things put in to upset a sensitive stomach.

It was the answer to my prayers. After several years of throwing up and diarrhea, this was finally the answer.

Well he's been good, today he didn't eat much... but he hasn't gotten sick yet. He just ate a bunch of food I'm hoping the diarrhoea doesn't come back. He's still on the D/D he likes it, that's for sure. I'm hoping when he goes potty that it's a good potty. I'm very nervous cause he's been very cuddly and sleepy today, and until about 30 minutes ago hasn't eaten anything since last night. So we'll see. As long as he doesn't throw up or have diarrhoea I'm not going to worry. I know he'll eat when he's hungry. This is why I record everything.

I brushed his teeth yesterday, I'm wondering if that upset him. I checked there are no meat flavors or anything in it, but I also haven't been brushing his teeth while he's been sick.

Will keep you all posted.

I had a Bichon Frise for 10 years who had stomach issues for the first 7 years. I finally switched her from SD to RC special and had no further problems. I highly recommend RC, I know it is very expensive, but I find it to be worth it in the long run.

Wondering how our little boy is doing today? Any sign of diarrhoea and any vomiting? Is he still eating the new food? Hoping that you have found the answer in this new food

My male Jr has IBS. His is usually set off with change and stress triggers. My old vet gave us medication for him. Any time he has a flare up (for lack of better word) I give him his pill and it pretty much stops him for a day getting his stools harder then after a couple days on his meds he's fine again and doesn't have a problem for usually a couple more months. If you change vets talk to them about that. It's been our life saver. We found out he had IBS 4 days before shipping out to Germany from Savannah, GA so I'm happy we were given those meds or else Idk if he could've made it through the whole flight without coming out very yucky at the other end. The pills he was prescribed are called Metronidazole.

I went through the same thing with my Westie puppy. What finally worked for her was The Honest Kitchen Zeal.

It's their limited ingredient/sensitive pup formula. Here's alink if you'd like to take a look: Zeal Dog Food | Food For Sensitive Dogs | The Honest Kitchen

Well I was a little worried the last few days, cause his eating habits slowed a little after I took away the Zantac. Then he got a little constipated. I called my breeder and she said his mom gets constipated a bit, and that unless he demonstrates a lot of discomfort or a huge stretch with no poops not to worry, she also pointed out that he's probably also absorbing a lot of the food rather than pooping it out cause he's lost so much weight. Well this morning I got up to both a half empty bowl of food and a nice poop :)

I called the vet today to report that he is doing fine and that I'm very happy with the D/D.

So now I'm going to start exercising him more and work on getting him in shape and ready to train again. There is a fun match (agility) coming up soon and I wanna bring him just to watch.

I'm so glad this is over. Lets keep hoping it stays that way. So while I originally hated prescription diets, I must eat my words, I am now very happy with the Science Diet D/D. :)
