ZoE just changed to RC Yorkshire Terrier 28 after being on RC YT puppy food since the get-go. She does great on Royal Canin and has no issues whatsoever. While it is $18 for a 2.5lb (12 cup) bag, she doesn't eat alot of it and the bag lasts her exactly 2 weeks. Add a bag of frozen carrots or peas into the mix for treats and the whole amount is less than $10 a week to feed her, which I think is great :) |
Basil and Caper Eat RC Yorkie. They just graduated from the puppy to the adult. They like it and no problems. It can also be ordered Online I would guess if it is not in your pet store. I know Petco and Petsmart sell it. |

When you say keep an eye on her "eye drainage" what exactly does that mean... should there never be eye boogies, or is that expected with this breed... a li'l build up that needs wiped daily? I just trimmed Maci's hair along the upper snout/inner eye so she could see, and I pulled out some eye boogies! Nothing crazy, but enough that it was a little icky haha. |

That was one of the things I meant to add to my prior response. I like buying the little 2.5 pound bag of RC as it's easy to store, lasts just a couple of week, so ZoE is sure to get fresh kibble and I don't worry about it going stale. |
I bought the 30lb bag because when I did fosters I had two 9lb dogs once, then a 70lb dog, and then once a 10lb dog. So it's always just been nice to have the bulk bag around. We keep it in our storage room, so it's not really in the way, and I've never had a dog refuse to eat as far as it not being fresh, but I always make sure it is either sealed or rolled and clipped and air pressed out as much as possible and time to time we put a li'l gravy on it depending on the dog. Now that it's just Maci I may downgrade to the 10lb? bag. I don't think you can earn a free bag with the 2.5lb bags? Maybe you can? Our pet store in town doesn't sell Royal Canin and I am not in the city like...ever. Acana is more readily available I find especially in small towns because it is a "local" canadian made food. However I guess I see no problems with RC... it's just pricier, but still a good quality. Now about this eye drainage... what is normal lol! |

Yeah Maci didn't have a TON like I said... but enough that there was a boogery build up and a li'l crust I had to clean. Might see if that goes away with Acana... it's so crazy how all dogs are so different and react so differently to diff. foods. |

The bag before this was Acana/Grasslands. He does great on it!! I do feed him Primal premade frozen raw nuggets in the a.m. though. Right now he is on a bag of Lamb...... |
Kaos switched to royal canin a month ago. He LOVES it! So far no problems at all. He even pretends I don't feed him sometimes to try and get a second bowl from my dad when I go to work. :p |
I had a little eye drainage today as I spent $350 for Food, Vitamins for all dogs, and 150 Pads for the brothers. Naturally Carlo's comes out the most expensive per month. One Can and six cups. I need to now find out what Marge spends on food for us. |
For the life of me I could not figure out what you were trying to say Shod! LOL I am SO slow. Got it now though! $350... yikes! Without any emergencies looks like Maci's monthly bill will be $30/food, $20/pee pads, $7/treats $40-50/insurance. Not too bad lol. Still... trying to figure out this eye business hahaha! |
website for dog food ratings Here is a site to view. It has dog food ratings. I like this site because it highlights in red things that we should avoid in our pet's food. Dry Dog Food Reviews | Dog Food Advisor |
Jaxon is on Royal Canin and he loves it! but I think I need to change it. He scratches constantly. The vet checked him and he doesn’t have any rashes, irritation or parasites so I don’t know what the cause of all this scratching and biting is. I tried to switch him to Blue Buffalo but he hates it and won’t even touch the little black balls. I also tried Wellness and he doesn’t like that either. I am mixing it with his RC to transition him but he eats won’t even touch his bowl unless it is all RC! I’m thinking of trying Acana but I just can’t find anyone local that carries it and I have already spent a small fortune on food. I just think he needs a grain free food and maybe that will stop the itching? I’m just hesitant to buy another kind of food that he won’t like. Any other suggestions? Could this scratching just be puppy dry skin or something? |
Ya know, I've noticed maci scratches quiet a bit too. Not excessively to the point she is raw, but mostly at her ears/neck. I know food allergies and irritations can make ears and throats itch... I have a cantaloupe/carrot allergy that does it to me, and I heard animals can have the same reactions to some foods. I checked her ears, clean as a whistle. I checked her fur/skin... no bugs or rashes. I think I'll still take her to the vet for a regular check up and mention the itching. But looks like it could be the RC since that's a common side effect. Plus she does NOT get excited to eat it lol, I just had to toss 1/2 of her serving from yesterday back in the bag and mix it all up from some fresh food... still not interested. She will pick at it when she gets hungry, but i don't think she's thrilled to eat it. |
