When and how can you feed raw? My puppy Bella is 9 weeks now. I feed her Blue Buffalo dry food and canned food. I want to switch her to raw but i'm not sure if it's still to soon? Also I have heard if I switch her to raw the days she eats it she should not eat dry food because it take so long for it to digest that it holds the meat in longer and runs a higher risk of salmonella. I'm confused now??? Please tell me when you started your dog on raw and how do you feed raw!!!! All comments are greatly appreciated. |
Have you decided to feed commercially prepared raw or prey model raw (home prepared)? Are you planning on continuing to combine kibble and raw, or do you wish to feed raw exclusively? |
I'll be using prey raw. I do want to use both raw and kibble. |
I, personally, would not combine both prey model and kibble, especially for a puppy. Possibly someone else has experience in doing so. |
So kibble and raw aren't a good is it ok for me to start her on raw now? |
I have been feeding raw for 1 year now..I Feed Orijen dry kibble in the morning around 7 am then she get Primal RAW at around 6 pm... She has done fine..... |
Raw meat (taking care of the handling of course) is perfect for almost any dog. Most of the diseases that dogs are developing now a days is related to poor nutrition and cheap commercial dog food. I have given my Roxy all the options available including good dry food, home prepared raw food, good quality canned, and home cooking and have to tell you that the best is the raw food. I use to prepare her home cooking more often than raw, but just for the convenience of storage. I believe that nothing beats the natural unprocessed food that you prepare in your home. But, again, it is my humble opinion. |
I've been feeding raw for a few yrs now though when I travel I take Stella & Chewy's dehydrated along with Great life kibble and I take frozen primal or instinct raw food in a cooler . I breed as well but I wean the pups with kibble so I can help the transition easier for the owners. If I keep a pup back for myself I start the raw as soon as possible with minced chicken or turkey. Since you are wanting to feed both, my opinion would be to keep the pup on kibble until it's 3 months old. Then start the raw either in the morning or evening which ever is easier on you. You don't want to mess with a pups digestive system so young, either raw or kibble but one or the other for now. Many many pet owners and breeders make the transition to raw cold turkey, meaning right off the bat and not messing with anything other than raw food and do very well. It would be a good idea too to get the pup started on probiotics and enzyms..... |
Thank you for your advice. Everyone was very helpful. |
I started feeding my Westie raw at about 8.5 weeks when she came home. Here she is enjoying her raw meal (I think at 10 weeks) http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...ride/003-5.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...ride/011-2.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...ride/006-5.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...ride/010-2.jpg About the kibble- raw and kibble meals should be given at least 10-12 hours apart. For this reason, I would not do 1/2 with a puppy. If you don't want to go all raw- consider using something like Ziwipeak or Honest Kitchen to supplement the raw that you are willing/able to do now. |
Love the photos! They so enjoy raw !:) |
I feed Sasha 1/2 raw and 1/2 kibble. I've been giving her Primal raw for almost a year now and she has done extremely well eating both. Had I known about raw years ago, I may have started her on it when she was a puppy. She always looks forward to her meals now. |
I don't feed kibble at all. Just a personal preference. I started feeding Oliver raw two days after he came home, at 9 weeks old. He does amazing. |
We LOVE raw!!!! Snickers and Reesie have been eating raw for a long time!! Reesie started at 14 weeks and Snickers started at 6 months. We feed premade/frozen raw by BRAVO! They love it! We use mainly freeze dried raw treats as well. My boys LOVE to eat and are SUPER healthy!!! :) Viv |

Chicken -- wings, backs, thighs, drumsticks, liver, hearts. I don't feed white meat or necks. Pork -- riblets, kidney, hearts. Turkey -- wings, thighs, necks. Beef -- hearts, liver. Fish -- Sardines, Tilapia (heads included), Mackerel, Salmon. Venison -- Starting in November. Obviously, large pieces are trimmed to avoid overeating. He eats about 1/4lb per day. |

The salmon I feed is Atlantic Salmon. I would not feed Pacific NW Salmon due to the risk you describe. The reason I feed beef heart is that it is very nutritious and very affordable. I save the good stuff for me... The reason I feed pork riblets is that they are the perfect meat to bone ratio for my dog and they are also very affordable. I feed pork heart for the same reason. I feed no other supplements and no vegetables or carbs of any kind. Many will normally just add fish oil daily. I choose to feed plenty of oily fish. Either works. Right on target !!! I'll add to that list Green Tripe ! |

Cooked bones can splinter and get stuck in the throat causing choking or cutting. We don't exclusively feed raw anymore because we had to move into a rental with a tiny, tiny freezer and I have four dogs. We can't move anywhere else because this is the only one that will allow me to have all four of them here. When we did do raw exclusively, I didn't add veggies to their meals. However, we were traveling often and we used the Honest Kitchen then which contains veggies. Also, we'd give veggies as snacks and chews. The green stuff next to the chicken is tripe. They love that stuff. Be warned- the smell is HORRIBLE. The first time I used it, I tossed my cookies. I often made my own pre-made meatballs because I found it to be less expensive and I could control the quality of the meat used. |

Here's me "teaching" my rescued adult PomChi to eat RMB's at about 2 years old (her, not me ;)) http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...ride/007-4.jpg |
I just got an idea, Im going to splice a cornish hen in half and start benny out with that. Hens I reckon would be smaller and softer than chickens. That way he'll get a little of everything...legs, thighs, breast. Then graduate to chicken and other things like pork. |
