Yes I agree that it is expensive. But if it's the only kibble that she will eat...I guess I just have to fork it over and eat lots of $1. fast food or sandwiches for myself. LOL I'll look into if PetCo has the RC in the big bag. Right now I got it from a small dog specialty store. |
Petco here I know has it in larger bags I think. |

I suppose the main point of feeding a dog any food, is so it won't starve to death, then I guess Beneful does its job great. :p But the fact they use artificial colors means they are a bad food to me. It's not proven fact that these artificial colors can cause cancer or whatever, but it doesn't need to be there, it's just for the human eye to have it look more appealing. Now on the corn thing, the thing that confuses me is that when corn is eaten, the whole kernel, the body hardly digests it, as it comes out pretty much looking like how it went in. Is corn even a nutritious food? I have read that huitlacoche is more nutritious than the corn crops they infect. Maybe we should be feeding that to dogs too. LOL I do tend to think of Beneful more as the McD's equivalent. Katie was kind of pudgy. But then again, she could have been free fed, I don't know. |
I personally think Beneful is disgusting. Even just looking at it. lol. Jackson always had a tough stomach (before this last incident) and had gotten into other kibble before with no ill effects (including Kibbles n Bits, which is pure crap, too) and Beneful made him sooo bloated! Like, it was REALLY noticeable. I did not know what was wrong with him. I had went away and my step-mom fed it as she had ran out of their regular food. Now I realize this was a quick switch, but still, never has a food done that to him. He also immediately threw up a few times after eating it. Gross stuff. And it's made by Purina. I just don't see a reason for corn *shrugs* Pure and simple. I don't think the dogs get any benefit from it but I don't really think it hurts them, either. Humans can't even digest it. I don't see a reason for a lot of things in dog food, though. Garlic is included in a few, and supposedly that's toxic to dogs, so it always confuses me why it's included in dog food but whatever. The small amounts in the dog food probably doesn't make a difference. But it seems like an insignificant ingredient to me. |

This is not the same one I read initially, but has similar info. Corn smut? Tastes great and good for you, too - Health - Diet and nutrition - msnbc.com |
I was talking to my vet the other day about corn in the dogs food, and I told her my thought process is corn has limited nutritional value and used as a flavor enhancer. She pointed out that many dogs for years have had no problem with the corn additive while a few select showed allergies and overall health imroved without the corn. Case by case, in her opinion it's situational. And for that very reason, she does not immediately recommend another dog food if the owner has their pet on let's say "Alpo". Just thought I'd put my two sense in. |
i am feeling lazy and only read some of the posts. I fed Royal Canin for years as it was the only premium food available for me for such long time. I do not feed it anymore but had good experiences with it. Beneful comment: Have anyone been feeding Beneful and noticed your dog drinking water excessively? Of course i did my test and that is why i asking everyone else. I ran out of food one time and all i could find was the common pedigree, beneful, iams... well, i choose beneful ( it was a Holiday night ... something like that ) well, my dogs were drinking way too much which lead me to think way too much salt??? well, put it away, went back to normal food, got it stuck in my head, bought another Beneful bag months later and tried again, same result, dogs drinking way way too much water. I do not recommend and i would not feed my dogs. XOXO |
Corn: What makes corn so much worse than all other grains for dogs? So things like brown rice are more digestible? It comes down to final nutrient analysis and a lot of companies seem to be able to accomplish this satisfactorily with corn. I personally don't see a need for cheese (except maybe cottage) in dog food, yet it's there in at least one brand. It's rich, and imo, not a good choice. I'd much sooner feed my dogs corn. Rylee prefers his corn not in kibble, but right off the cob. lol |

Dogs either ate table scraps or raw food. Keeping in mind that table scraps in the 1950's were most likely a lot healthier than table scraps of 2011. Corn is cheap. It's a cheap way, IMO, to up the protein in a dog food. Things like corn, wheat, soy, etc, are a lot cheaper to load up in dog food than meat. On the contrary, I don't think corn is like this evil ingredient either. I don't think it should be used as a first, second, or even third ingredient in a dog food. And I don't think dogs were meant to process a lot of carbs in general (in fact, simple carbs are pretty hard on the pancreas, from everything I've been researching). I believe corn and potatoes are known as complex carbs, so are things like brown rice, barley, and oats. So I don't necessarily think all grains are BAD and I don't really think corn is any worse than the others. Just maybe not necessary all the time. But since each dogs system is different and can handle different things, there is no one perfect solution. |

I'd rather my pup's food company put corn in the food to save money (which I think is really an extreme oversimplification of why it is used - and soy..not the cheapest thing ever) and instead used that money to test their foods properly. JMO |

I'm also tired of hearing that soybeans are cheap fillers. Soy is not cheap. Soy is an acceptable protein source and for some dogs with allergies, food intolerances, or other issues, it works. JMO.... |
