if you have every fed Merrics, the pieces are a little bit bigger than that..its the only food I can think of right now that compares to it. My 4 pound toy poodle had no trouble eating it and she has a "teddy bear" type face with a small snout. I will try and get pics later and post them. Im headed out right now to watch my daughter march in a parade. |
1 Attachment(s) This is the Nature's Best. Perfectly round. Between 1/4 the size of a nickel and 1/4 the size of a dime. Sorry about the shadowing. It seems to be exactly like the SD small bites I used to feed Ellie. Wonder if the Ideal Balance is the same. |
Is there any difference between the Two? |
the Natures Best is very tiny...even more so than the C&P that I thought was small. Maybe I dont need to get the small bites after all. Guess I could just buy a small bag to compare. |

I didn't even know they had small bites in the SD NB. This bag just says lamb and rice adult. Will check again though. |
yes they have small bites in Nature best, not Ideal Balance |

I just switched my 3 dogs to SD Ideal Balance. (Well, Belle is still mostly on canned I/D for a few more days, recovering from a tummy issue after her spay) My 80 lb Ziggy loves it, my 12 lb Shih Tzu, Oliver loves it (he can be VERY picky) and I've given Belle some as training treats and she loves it, too. The kibble size is fine for all of them and they are eating it right up which makes me very happy. I had been a Hill's SD fan for a long time and I stopped feeding it when the holistic dogfood trend started. I fed Solid Gold for a while, and then Blue Buffalo for a few years, then Natural Balance for a bit. I did try Iams Healthy Naturals for about a month most recently and they didn't really like it. But, I think that I'm going to stick with SD from now on - I'm so glad I found this thread :D |

Yeah we are sticking with SD too, this is the only food that my dogs have done well on continously. I see that you live in syracuse, I live near Pulaski!! :D |
I am switching also to nature's best, open a can of merrick turduckin sat. and it was all juice and very if any meat so I open another can same thing. big dogs enjoy it. I am going to try SD savory chicken, I only give wet food once a week as a treat since I do not feed chews. |

My Ziggy's mom is an Aussie/Border Collie mix... dad is an unknown dog who jumped the fence. He is a sweetie pie - couldn't ask for a better behaved, more loving dog.... Here is is with Belle when she first came to live with us. I can't imagine having to leave a dog behind. My parents 14 yr old rottie/shepherd mix just passed away in June. He didn't have an aggressive bone in his body. It's too bad that individual dogs can't be tested for temperment rather than judging them by breed :( |
Just thought I'd put my two sense in here since I've bugged Cathy and Crystal regarding food as well :p I'm feeding Gizmo the unholy Innova! I know bad me, they were bought out by P & G blah blah blah, but it's the only food Gizmo enjoys. His poops are good and he has little to no eye goop. With all the food problems I've had, I'm just thankful that he's eating. With that being said, after this bag is gone I'm going to try a bag of SD. After doing some research, I agree with the above posts. There's actual food trials with educated and certified experts that have tested the foods as opposed to simply printing opinions on a website or forum. It's not credible to me. I tried Orijen which is supposed to be the best of the best dog food, and Gizmo was so so so sick. So, I'm not saying that holistic foods are bad but hoenstly, more research on my part had to be done with regards to me being the furbaby owner. It's like when I went on vacation with my friends family who only ate organic, my body totally rejected it, and I have never had more of a sick vacation in my life (I know, TMI). Off my soap box now. |
I think everyone needs to be persuaded in their own mind as to what is best. SD is a good brand. Won't work for all dogs... Just an FYI, Natura (Innova) does have veterinary nutritionists on staff and does do AAFCO feeding trials from what I read. Whether or not their QC compares to some fo the bigger companies I do not know. It is not the first food I would choose or recommend, but I think it's far from teh worse. I think they have Dr. Perea on staff (?) and the site says they do trials. Maybe email them? They do advertise human grade meat which is not defined. Could be a form of trickery. That REALLY bothers me. One of their lines of food is also not something I like. That also bothers me. I don't think it's the best food or company, but not the worst either... |

Any recommendations for SD non rx Crystal? |
I prefer some of their newer foods because by-products and such just kinda gross me out. I feed Rylee SD Nature's Best. Could only find it at a smaller pet store (Rocco's actually). Found out that SD Ideal Balance is very similar and is more widely available at the pet store chains. They are priced about the same. The Ideal Balance maybe a bit cheaper.. Because I can get that at the chain stores, for convenience it is probably the one I will end up feeding. Just got a bag of it. |
For now I am going to order SD Nature's Best through my vet. They do have it at Petco but in very limited quantities. If I have a problem with that, I will probably go with the Ideal Balance. |

I switched my dogs cold turkey over the weekend to Ideal Balance (I dont recommend this, but my dogs went crazy for it so I gave it to them) and they had no issues what so ever. They still only poop twice a day, they have high energy levels (which I love :)) and when they run around I swear they are singing.."we feel good"...lol... Im pretty sure they are very happy, as am I..;) |

I show Natural Pet Food FAQs – Pet Feeding, Organic Pet Food Topics – Natura Pet Products to state: "Describe the grade of meat used in your natural dog food and cat food. Rather than relying on the “grade” of meat, we focus on the specific nutritional qualities of the meat. We only use meat that fits our strict specifications for protein, fat, moisture, and ash. All animals have received ante- and post- mortem inspection at approved facilities with no evidence of systemic disease of animal and human health significance. The meat meets all USDA/FDA standards for product safety." Science Diet's official response to the GoodGuide.com rating issue states: "Our ingredients include by-products, which are common ingredients found in both human and pet food. Chicken by-product meal is a high quality, very palatable, concentrated source of protein. The chickens are sourced from human grade processing plants." |
I believe their claims about human grade meat are part of what the Natura lawsuit is about. "Any" company that says they use human grade meat - I expect them to explain what that means. If they don't mean that their meat is fit for human consumption, then IMO it is misleading. So if SD has done this, I take issue with it also. That said, SD said a human grade facility. I don't see where it says they use human grade meat. If they are saying that they use human grade meat and it isn't fit for people, then yes, I would have a problem with that. |

Last month, the court approved a $2.15 million settlement to plaintiffs. See, http://www.petproductssettlement.com...2-2125fa11a47f |

Now, on the subject of those companies that denature (also inquiring as to what is used to denature) and those that don't...that is a an entirely different post. |
