A new study indicates that intranasal should only be given the first time. Quote:

Sugar has had both the injectable and the intranasal. When she first came to live with me my vet chose to give her the shot. As she was injecting she said"this one hurts!". Sugar cried and cried and cried :(. The vet got her an ice pack. She continued to cry out whenever I would accidentally touch that spot over the next 4 days!! She now only gets the intranasal!! |
My 4 have had the shots and the nasal with no problems. I found out that the guidelines have changed so they recommend you have this vaccine every six months. This is what I was told when I scheduled my dogs to be groomed. |

So I now say NO to bordatella overall, but I would still opt for the intranasal if I were giving it and that was the recommendation of my AHHA certified vet at the time Teddy had it for early puppy classes (at my option and not as required). |

Joey’s vet said something about its required if they are to be hospitalized, and you don't want to give them it to them, if they are already sick with something else. So, we did the intranasal, but I felt like it was more to fill a box, than to help Joey. This year we're doing titers, but the more I read about them, the less confidence I have, and I don’t even know if they test for bordatella. |

Although our vet's office promotes annual vaccines, when I brought up the issue, our doctor immediately agreed to doing the 3-year plan for my boys and he did not recommend bordetella for them. |
I think a lot of it is a matter of opinion. Here the intranasal only is offered (that's what I've seen anyway). Vaguely remember it had to do with something about the reaction rate. Ellie's vet does not push too hard for this vaccine to be given. I settle the debate by not giving either. lol. Ellie has never had kennel cough and has never been vaccinated for it. She rarely walks in pet store and doesn't go to a groomer. She was going to outside dog events and walking on the grass for awhile and never picked it up. Her old vet office required it, but waived because of her reaction issues. Now usually the only offices she goes to are offices where her regular vet is working and she lets me do whatever on the vaccine front. New office doesn't require it for hospitalization. They are careful with infection control though. Exam rooms get closed to dogs or cats if certain diseases are suspected. Sick animals taht go to the back are taken to isolation. She hangs out with me there and we have never had a problem. She hasn't been vaccinated for parvo or distemper in quite some time (distemper titer is low). I'm around yucky dog diseases all the time and that has never been an issue either. I stopped doing titers awhile back. It was a waste of money for us. |
I don't do either, as this is not a vaccine that ZoE has. While her vet highly recommended Lepto for her, he didn't push this one at all, it was just offered as an option. |
Wow!! Thank you, yt, for all of the info. The articles were very interesting. I don't have a choice, since Ian's appointment is tomorrow, so he'll be getting an injection. (I hate for him to have to get a shot!) Hopefully all will go well. |
We got back from the vet about an hour ago, and everything actually went great. Ian got the shot, and his little treat, and so far he is acting very normal. His vet said that the shot is good for 6 months, as is the nasl drops. The vet said that some vets give bordatella once a year, but apparently that is not the majority. Most give every 6 months because if you want to board, bring to day care or bring to a groomer, they require it every 6 months. I'm glad it's over! I have five months to worry about rabies and the other core vaccinations. |
Mine are also done with the nasal spray. They seem to be fine. We only do it once a year though. I was not told it is only good for 6 months. |
