We're on our 3rd dog (different breeds) on Nutro. We started it to stop our first dog's itching that even steroids didn't completely control. Nutro brought the itching to a screeching halt and we ditched the steroids. Never had another problem for. Started on Nutro about 7 years ago. |
When Gucci was on Nutro Max she was itching like crazy. I feed her Canidae now. She likes is ok so far and has no problems. I was thinking to switch her to Innova thou cause I have heard is very good. |
Nutro and itching I bought Nutro for Latte's itching. I saved the receipt for the money back guarentee. She's scratching a bit, but I'm waiting it out. I think if you ask 100 people for their opinion, you'll get about 100 differnt foods. Same thing when I was deciding on a dog breed! You can only do what works for your baby. :aimeeyork |
I feed my yorkie Nutro-Lamb and Rice and she itches all the time too. I will switch her food to see if it makes a difference. I was already thinking of switching to the Chicken Soup for Dogs. Thanks for mentioning this, now I will definitely try a new food. :) |
My breeder told me I should get Royal Canin . But I ended up getting Nutro because my friend swears by it. But the funny thing is the breeder slipped and I saw her bring in a 40lb bag of Iams!! I have noticed in the past couple of days that Rambo has been scratching a lot. I mix his dry and wet together since I think the food is a little to hard. Has anyone tried Royal Canin ? What about Iams? |

These yorkies say "We Eat Organic" 4 Attachment(s) HUMMMM, so much scratching is that darn Natural Flavoring ingredient in there? I have not had much luck with most brands but Bill Jac is all my yorkies favorite. They LOVE it. I have put Sience Diet, Royal Canin, and Eukanuba down and they will only eat the Bill Jac. I dont know why but it works for now. I read labels like a mommy on a mission to find a Healthy doggie food. Its very hard to find. So much JUNK out there. A few breeders i know feed like me and are convinced they see a difference. I do too in all my little piggies. All meats are pumped up with hormones, and antibotics. All grains and vegs are grown with pestisides and poisons that wind up in our little yorkies tummy's. Just for Kicks check out whats in your babies dry food and then go online and look up those things. You may be shocked at what you find. Could explain the scratching. |

Can Wosie come to dinner at your house?? I will have her ask for a people-bag! :D |
Eagle Pack I just looked at the ingredients in Eagl Pack Holistic for puppies and the first four ingredients ? Chicken meal, ground yellow corn ,ground brown rice and milled corn. I don't understand why that is in the recommened list but I am not feeding it to Satch. I did recieve a letter from the lady that helped put this list together I will post it seperatly. To be honest,I am about ready to start making homemade food for Satch. When My Peke got old and his digestive system was not working well I fed him Gerber lamb baby food mixed with cottage cheese and a little rice.He did really well on it .With vitamins there was never any problem.I just don't like the sound of so many of the ingredients in the canned. What's a mother to do   |
From mary@dogaware.com Hi Theolinda, I try to provide the information you need to be able to tell which are the best foods on my web page. Just because a food is not listed there does not mean it is not recommended, neither my web page nor the Whole Dog Journal's lists are considered exhaustive. Vets have almost no nutritional training, and what they do have comes from the dog food companies, who have written their textbooks and even teach their classes, so your vet is not the right person to rely on for nutritional advice, any more than for training advice. They simply can't know everything, and they are not trained in those areas. I consider Science Diet to be a very poor quality food. It used waste products from the human food industry and is one of the last foods to still use ethoxyquin as a preservative. Nutro is a middle of the road food. They do not use human grade ingredients, like the best foods do. Here is the ingredient list I see for Nutro Max Puppy: http://www.nutroproducts.com/maxdogpuppy.asp Chicken Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Wheat Flour, Poultry Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of natural Vitamin E), Ground Rice, Rice Bran, Dried Beet Pulp (sugar removed), Whole Wheat, Lamb Meal, Natural Flavors, Potassium Chloride, Brewers Dried Yeast, Lecithin, Choline Chloride, Dried Buttermilk, Dried Egg Product, Dried Kelp (source of Iodine), This food is high in carbohydrates, as most dry foods are, with four different types of grains in the first six ingredients. Corn gluten meal is a very poor quality waste product from the human food industry, and there's a lot of it in there since it's the second ingredient listed. Beet pulp is also a waste product filler. Natural Flavors can be things like MSG. This is not nearly as bad a food as the Science Diet, but it's not top quality either. I would look for the best foods you can find in your area, and maybe talk to some of the smaller stores about carrying one or more of the better brands, if possible. I would also look at feeding canned food, which is generally higher quality than kibble (lower carbs, no preservatives). Keep in mind that you cannot leave canned food out, as it will spoil. I also recommend alternating between different foods, rather than feeding the same brand all the time, and you can improve any diet by adding some fresh foods to it. Since kibble is already so high in carbohydrates, what you want to add is high protein foods, such as meat and eggs (raw or cooked), dairy (yogurt, cottage cheese), canned fish with bones (Jack Mackerel, Pink Salmon, Sardines packed in water), and healthy leftovers (the same food you would eat, not the part you would throw away). There are a number of links on my web site to more information about the various ingredients in pet foods, if you want to learn more.
