Am I the only one who has never bought bully sticks?
 

I'm so concerned about the choking possibility, and I read somewhere on yt that some of them smell.

What's the good:thumbup:, bad:thumbdown and smelly:eek: about bully sticks?

We throw them away, when they get to be around two inches long, there's a choking possibility with any chewing stick, and you must know if you're dog is a gulper. They are safer than bones and sticks like raw hides because they are 100 percent digestible, meaning that it will not cause an obstruction in the intestines. Some people have claimed the sticks have caused diarrhea, and I believe it really important to get sticks that have been cured properly, and those that have little moisture content. Some sticks are preserved with artificial preservatives, and have expiration dates, and have been linked to intestinal upset, again, I would look for sticks that are use no artificial preservatives, and have no expirations dates. We've been using Merrick Bully Stix for about 4 years and Joey has never had a problem with them. He chews on them every night before settling down, and I do believe they help keep his teeth and gums healthy. His vet says, to continue what we're doing because his teeth look great. One 6 inch stick lasts about a week, and if your dog eats it too fast, it may have too much moisture content. Yes they have an odor, but Joey loves them sooo much, I don't mind.

swallowing a shorter piece whole. They will digest, but, it would
take a while, and probably upset them.

I usually pull/take them up, when they reach about 2" in length,
and just give mine fresh (long) ones.

Actually, I don't think the Bully Stick smells all that bad, but,
their breath does after they've chewed it a wile. You can buy
ones that don't create that odor.... OR

Increase the Dental Hygiene of your animal(s) :D

Nope...I don't, and won't, buy them either. I can't get past what they are...doesn't seem right for my fluffy little dogs to be chewing on a bull penis...gee, and people wonder why they smell :rolleyes:

I get the Red Barn ones at Petsmart and Merrick, They do not smell. Like Nancy I throw them away when they get too small, just about 2 inches. I also wont allow him to have them when I am not home ( just to be safe) They do not splinter off like the rawhide type and they are all natural so they are digestible.

I would try one just to try, if you want maybe you can even sit there when he is chewing on it, if you feel that uncomfortable then stop giving them to him. For what it is worth I think they are the safest out there, Pnut only gets bully sticks to chew on, sometimes I will give him a pigs nose, he LOVES those things!!

I couldn't live without bully sticks. :thumbup: They keep Jackson occupied for up to an hour when I have homework, or whatever else I have to do. He likes the Himlayan Chews alright but not as much as bully sticks.

I have been the happiest with Bully Sticks - All Natural Dog Treats - Best Bully Stick odor-free sticks. I have found them to be BEST price-wise (I think it equaled out to about $1.41 per odor-free 6" THICK stick when I did the math, including shipping in there) and I don't smell them at all (unless you stick your nose right up to a chewed stick, it's a very faint smell). I got some TERRIBLY smelly ones before from ebay... omg, it smelled like a barn full of horse crap, I had to throw them out.....

I let my boys chew until there is about 2-3" left. I fear they can choke on them if they get too small. I buy the 12" so they really do last a long time. As with any edible chew, your dog should be monitored.

Yes, I forgot to add, when they get down to about 2", I throw them out, as he doesn't care about them anymore anyways by that point and I, too, worry about choking when they are that small. I got the "thick" 6 inch'ers and they seem to last him a while! Lately he's been going through one 6" stick every 5-7 days. The thick ones are lasting us substantially longer than the 'regular' did.

I'm glad you were happy with them too! I really loved their service and I feel their prices are VERY fair. I was paying sometimes up to $4 per 6" stick at the pet store before so it's a HUGE difference. I've been buying them in bulk (of 25 or 50) so they last us for a looonggg time. :)

My babies love Bullies! We get the odor free ones from Best Bully.

I just bought Princess her first bully stick today. I was pretty grossed out by it when recently found out what it is, but I hear so many good things about them. She took to it right away and chewed it until I gave her another new toy. Her breath doesn't stink and it doesn't stink. Idk exactly what kind it is, I bought it at the "upscale" pet store unpackaged. And I'm not grossed out by what it is...if we all sat back and thought about everything we eat and how it comes about, we'd probably be starving!

Jack and Josie got their first bully sticks from best bully a few weeks ago. They love them. Josie will chew all hers till it is all gone. She gets very mad cause I too throw away when it gets down to about 2". I did not know about the odor vs odor free ones and got the ones that smell. My next batch will be the odor free ones. I also found out after I ordered them what they were made of.
Now when I ask if they want a treat, I just ask do you want a bull peenie? LOL

I don't buy bully sticks either. Sammy chews on CET Dental chews medium size.

I read this post and was like "wow that's me!" But anyway, Gizmo loves bully sticks. And like Britster said, it does keep them occupied plus provides an awesome wind down for Giz at the end of the night.
As for the smell, I've bought Merrick and also the local pet shop has local brands which cure them good. Although they do have a smell, I have a good nose and they don't bother me.

Great for his little teeth too! :0) So, it's worth it.

You aren't the only one that doesn't buy them.

When I just had Duke I didn't as he doesn't/won't chew on anything.

But with Piper they are a life saver!

If you don't like the thought of bully sticks, you can try himalayan chews or antlers.

funny discussion! embarrased to say i thought they were testicles, guess it makes more sense now. not too grossed out, think the hoofs have the worst smell ever & pig snouts where you can see the nostrils, if thats what they are, gross me out way more. i don't think bully's smell too bad & look fine. my 2 babies love them & i buy them because they are digestible. found them to be way too expensive in the pet stores, was very happy to find them so reasonable @ bestbullystick.com. you have to buy them in bulk but they are about 1/3 the price. :thumbup:

Yeah if they were made with "that" I would not buy them either! My 2 love bully sticks. However, what I have observed is that they start to drink more water after chewing on them. They also get quite possess over them and try to take each others , or when one hides theirs , she will try and snatch the other one from our shih tzu. I also noticed that they don't eat as well when thry have their bully sticks.
So I try not to buy them a lot . I try to make them just for special treats. I only once gave them more then one a month just because thry were a good price... But usually not.

I don't bring them to my dads house anymore. With all 3 dogs, they are all a pain in the butt. My dads JRT female is already a bitch, LOL... the bones make her worse. And then their Dachshund is getting possessive, so then Jackson gets protective of his, and it's just a mess. We had one big fight over one and ever since, it's just not worth it with all 3 of them around (unless each are in their own room, locked up). I can definitely see how it could be an issue with multiples. But they act like that with ALL bones so they don't buy any anymore.

Jackson won't chew much of anything (Nylabones, rawhides, dental chews, etc) even the Himlayans are just... ehhh so-so with him. He could take 'em or leave 'em. But bully sticks, it's been, well, over 2 years and he has never gotten tired of them! :p

Have to admit that I have never bought them either. With 4 furkids here, I don't want one more thing that they could potentially fight over.
