Bordatella So, I believe Piper is due for another Bordatella. Not sure but they say every 6 months or so right? I'm waiting on one of her doggie daycares to say something if so, and I'm really not interested in making her do it again. What are ya'll's opinions on multiple Bordatella vaccines? |
My babies only get it once a year cause they require it at the groomers. I don't board my my babies at all...they stay with a good friend of mine when we go on vacation or something and can't take them with us...I have never heard that they need it every 6 mos... |
The vets here also say they should have it every 6 months but I don't get it at all for mine. I groom them myself and they don't get boarded anywhere...they go with us when we go. |
I only get it because Jackson has had kennel cough twice now (both times when he was *not* UTD on his bordatella vaccine). We are always around other dogs, parks, stores, etc, so I guess it's kind of necessary for us. I don't wanna deal w/ KC again - very annoying. So I'm stuck getting it. I do minimal vaccines in general though. So if it's not needed, don't get it. |
My vet also recommends getting the nasal bordatella twice a year. As of now we don't really go around any other dogs, but she does go to the groomer. He said alot of vets quit carrying the vaccine because they had done studies and the vaccine actually showed no defenses toward KC after being given over a year period and the nasal showed a strong defense. So he went back to giving it via nasal. |
Typically, the intranasal bordetella is only good for 6 months. The injectable form is usually good for a year. If you are taking you baby to daycamp, you should definitely get it updated. Some vets will even suggest getting the injectable twice yearly for dogs that frequent boarding/daycamp facilities to make sure the vaccine is still in their body. Since your daycamp place requires the bordetella, you should get it updated so you dont get turned away for expired vaccines. |

All of our dogs get it every 6months. Its $20 and alot less hassle than taking care of a furbaby with KC. Some of mine go out in public and some dont,but I dont want to take chance on bringing it home. |
I do not give my dogs the bordatella vaccine. Its just a personal choice on my part. I only do the core vaccines. I have heard not so good things about some yorkies and reactions to vaccines. |
Bordatella is not a deadly disease. It is not FUN to deal with and if Piper ever got it, I would feel terrible. HOWEVER...I am not going to vaccinate her every 6 months. The daycare she goes to now is PHENOMENAL, clean, and on top of their game. They do not require 6 months, so I won't be doing it. A new one opening up **highly suggests** it, so I'm waiting to see if they come back and say she can't go without another vaccine. I emailed them back and said we wouldn't be interested if they required her to get it again. I realize it can happen and respect those who do vaccinate every 6 months but I've made the decision not to. Thanks for everyones insight. |
I never heard of it being needed every 6 months either. I don't get it for my dogs because I groom them myself and they are never boarded, but the clinic I worked at we did it once a year (injectable) only for the dogs that were boarding, going to a groomer or a daycare. Also, like someone else said, kennel cough is annoying to get rid of but it's nothing deadly or severe if treated properly. Idk, there's alot of vets that over vaccinate and it's annoying. I actually only do the Distemper combo vac. (without lepto) every 3 years after the dog turns a year old and has their second one (a year after the puppy shots). Studies have shown that it's effective for that long. |
Yeah I hadn't either but they wont allow us to go there unless she's done twice, so we won't be going. I already have another facility I take her to that is excellent and doesn't require that so...their loss. I run a meetup for small dogs too and was planning on giving them lots of business by renting space from them once or twice a month but oh well. Will have to wait until September when she is due for shots again. I understand the reasoning, but I'm anti vaccines in general for a lot of reasons. Well, not entirely anti vaccines but certain ones and overuse of them. My husband contracted MS from a vaccine and while I know dogs and humans are different, I'm not exposing Piper to anything that in my book is unnecessary. She goes to daycare maybe once a week so its just not that crucial to me. |
They actually asked if I found a vet who said otherwise to let them know and they'd allow it. LOL. So...if anyone finds anything or hears of any vets that stick to the one year rule...holler! |
I did all the shots as a puppy but now I only do rabies (because it's required by law). I've heard that it's not hard to treat kennel cough so if that happens I will just treat it. And Teddi does NOT stay home we go to dog parks and everything and she has been just fine. |
I choose to do bordatella and my vet only offers the 6 month one because she does not offer the injectable 1 yr one. Taycie is around a dog where I work and he goes to doggie daycare and boards there when the family goes out of town. He is constantly bringing home something. Last year he had a horrible eye infection before I got Taycie. Not to mention he at least get kennel cough once a year.. No Joke. She also goes to parks regulary and has many encounters with many of my friends dogs ... To me, because the chances of her getting KC are high I choose to do it. |
