New Trifexis (3 types of parasite protection in one tablet)
 

Took Mocha to his bi-monthly anal glad appointment today. While at the vet I noticed this new brochure about Trifexis, a chewable tablee that is used to kill fleas and prevents infestations, prevents heartworm disease, treats and controls intestinal parasite infections such as hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms. This tablet is still given once a month much like other parasite protection tablets, pills, or topicals. I'm interested in it and have read the brochure from front to back, but still skeptical simply because its new or at least to my knowledge. Are any of you familiar with it?

Please let me know what you think. I only want whats best for my lil guy!

I just wanted to bump this question up in case anyone can give advice or has any experience with Trifexis. I have 3 very small yorkies all under 5 lbs and I was wondering if others have given this to their yorkies and had any problems. My vet has sent this home with me (kind of pricey at $93.00 per 6 month supply but worth it if it works as indicated) but I have not yet given it to them.

It would be like giving Interceptor and Comfortis. I don't give really new drugs if avoidable and Comfortis is one that I'd like to see more reports on. Also, combining drugs like this may be okay, but if you want to stop the flea portion for the winter, that wouldn't be possible.

My guess it that it isn't a bad drug though.

And I think Novartis is the major company to use milbemycin. What they do (Interceptor and Sentinel) seems to work well. I just wouldn't be too excited about going with another company, but that's just me.

I know that Spinosad is the main ingredient of Comfortis, which is used to prevent fleas. We just switched to Comfortis last month.

I wanted to post my results so far with Trifexis. Asked the vet today whether it was safe to administer the Trifexis to my yorkies, all of which are under 5 lbs. She very generously took the time on a busy Friday to double check the literature. The one ingredient that she would be concerned with would have to be given triple dose over 5 days to be toxic so she felt confident that it would be safe.

Armed with that knowledge and having read the Trifexis pamphlet that stated that the medication is best given with food, I hid the pills in their food and they were successfully consumed by each dog at 2:00 p.m.

Around 4:00 two of the yorkies (one 6 months old, the other 9 months old) had vomited. The 7 year old yorkie has not vomited so far today. I checked the vomit for the pills very carefully and could not find any trace of the tablet.

Now I am worried that they didn't receive the medication that they should have and whether I wasted $300.00 on heartworm/flea/intestinal parasite treatment that they will vomit up each month.

I am not sure what to do at this point, call the veterinarian and ask if they can exchange the open packages (yes, I assigned one package to each yorkie with their name and date for refill and opened all of them, darnit!)
for another product or just take my chance next month and see if it causes them to be sick again. Gah!

You'll need to call the vet anyway to make sure that a redose isn't necessary (could have broken down in the stomach and came back up in a liquid form).

What were they on for heartworms before?

My Comfortis packet says that as long as they don't vomit within 30 minutes, a redose is not necessary. Can you find anything like that on the Trifexis packaging?

I've been giving mine Comfortis with no problem, and I plan to switch to trifexis soon. They're never thrown up from the Comfortis, luckily. It's expensive but it cost only slightly more than the Comfortis, so it's like getting the heartworm medicine for almost free. This post reminded me that I need to go pick some up, actually.

I just purchased Trifexis today to administer to my yorkies. For those that don't know Trifexis is made by the same company that makes Comfortis. I wasn't sure about it at first but talk to my vet about it then talked to a friend I went to school with who is a vet and works for the USDA now. Here is the message he sent me....

"Nothing as good as comfortis.....not even close for fleas. Program only prevents eggs from hatching, it doesn't do anything for adult fleas. Only other preventative that I would recommend would be frontline plus. Must be put on 2 days before or 2 days after a bath. Don't screw with any of the other stuff at walmart or Atwoods, or advantage/advantix, promeris, etc..... There is a new product releases last month called trifexis that we just got in. It is comfortis plus monthly heartworm prevention all in one. So if you are using comfortis and heartguard it will save you a couple a dollars per month per dog. Those tablets have less of the flavoring and it seems that some dogs that didn't like comfortis that well will eat this. I use comfortis/ or trifexis plus frontline both. Plus either heartgard or interceptor for heartworm prevention if I use comfortis."

My issue with comfortis is the flavoring, it never fails, I could hid it in a barrel of treats and they would both find it an spit it out. :thumbdown They hate it! So it ends up being a force feed, and I hate doing that. I was excited about the different flavoring. I will give it tonight, and I'm hoping it stays down, mine have always had sensitive tummies. I paid $87 today for a 3 month supply for each dog (the 6 tablet box). Comfortis is $72/Heartguard $32.... So it's not too much difference. It would be easier to just have to give one pill though. Anyone else try it yet?:confused:

had bad experience with trifexis. my 7 month 3 pound yorkie had his first dose last night and this morning woke up acting really strange. he seemed real spacy and out of it so I thought he was having a low blood sugar and gave him honey. usually he would snap out of it but he didn't. I noticed he kept looking up as if he has stiff neck and if he was seeing something. he was trembling, twitching, watery squinty eyes, fast heart beat, lethargic, and could barely sit up. I looked up side effects and everything he has was listed under possible toxicity. I also read how lots of dogs have died from this medicine. I wouldn't recommend it.

So what happened to your pup?????????!!!! Is he OK???? My vet will not give Trifexis to small dogs, especially Yorkies. Not tolerated very well in a lot of small dogs, especially Yorkies.

Thankfully he is doing better! Took him back to vet and they called manufacturer to see if they wanted doc to give charcoal to absorb what was left and make him throw up and/or keep for observation but all they said was since his symptoms had subsided there was nothing to do but keep and eye on him so we took him home so he could be comfortable! He didn't eat all day until finally last night he ate! This morning he seemed to be acting normal! I just wish I would've looked up this medicine before I gave it to my poor baby!

I'd do more research.
 

I had read that Trifexis has killed alot of dogs. I forget where I saw that. Maybe google it, but I would definitely look into it. Especially for the smaller dogs.:aimeeyork

Kiki has taken it since she was 7 months old. She is very sensitive but I always give it to her with a good meal. Usually boiled chicken and rice. She has never had a problem with it. My cousin that has a boxer had trouble giving it to her male. He had a reaction similar to the one described above. He vet said he would never be able to take it again and I believe trifexus paid for his medical bills.
