smelly n scratching My Henry has been scratching like crazy and within 2 days of his bath he is starting to smell really bad and his fur is not shinny at all anymore. Could this be skin related due to his diet or something else? Should I get his skin scraped n tested? Ive always had them on Iams which I know is not a highly rated food but they do so well on it or did. I did switch them to the Iams Small breed once they turned 13 mo. Any suggestions or ideas please let me know... |
Have you changed anything in the house like detergents, air freshners, cleaners etc.? Is he eating anything that he never had before? Could it be seasonal allergies? If it continues, I would see the vet. Hope things improve!! |
The smell in particular would make me think this is something that can't be treated with OTC products. Yeast maybe? He really does need to see his vet for an exam. |

I have changed air freshners n their food from puppy to adult as well as the shampoo. The shampoo I use is the Yorkie Splash n Shine which i have used on them from day 1 but they recently made it thicker so therefore changed the formula... I am going to start out at the vet for a scraping to rule that out first. Thanks so much for your time n response... |

It is not a "BAD" smell but just not the normal smell good dog that I am use to. To better discribe the smell I would say he smells like corn chips lol... I am taking him to the vet however to rule out anything medical etc first. Thanks so much... |
I've read, on here, where some yorkies have that corn chip smell on their paws, and it's a fungus...Maybe it's coming from the paws? Also, a client of mine, w/a chorkie had terrible itchy/flaky skin, and is now on thyroid meds, for low thyroid...Of course only a vet can be sure about all that, and you're taking your baby, so hopefully you'll find out soon... |

That corn chip smell can be pretty normal (although it should just be his feet). He may need to be seen for the itching though. Switching shampoos might be worth a try. |

What shampoo n conditioner do u use? |
I use Minksheen and its got a pretty heavy cologne smell |
It sounds like a type of dermatitis which is generally caused by an allergy to some type of food. Don't feed any poultry or dairy, and just feed red meat ground with green beans or broccoli and carrots. |
It could be dermatitis or his thyroid...I would go to the vet and have them check...My girl Bailey RIP...she was about 8 years old and started scratching and smelling...she had no fleas...so I took her to the vet and he checked her thyroid, her thyroid had stopped working...once we started the synthroid and it got in her system good she was back to normal..she had to take it daily for the rest of her sweet life. |
I was JUST about to ask about the corn chip smell..... I gave corky a bath today, cuz last night it was the worst. Good to know it is normal! |
Henry has an appointment tomorrow but in the meantime I have changed his food to Orijen Regional Red. Anyone use this? I did allot of research n this seems to be the best from what I gather. He doesnt seem to be as bad after his bath this time so I am keeping my fingers crossed. If it continues after the vet check n its normal n the changing of food, I am going to switch shampoo n cond. I know they have changed formulas on the shampoo to make it thicker so that may be the problem... |
after researching food for two days n decided on Orijen Regional Red, I just now stubbled across this on a review site This is not the right food for you if: Your dog is small and/or inactive How did I miss that? Well there went 85.00  Anyone else using Orijen? n if so which one is good for small dogs? |
