Whether to stay overnight for neuter?
 
My 5 month old puppy needs to be neutered at around 6 months. My regular vet says he should be kept overnight for observation, while the vet I am thinking of switching to says he can go home the same day and they do not keep overnight.

My dad has a yorkie too, and when he went in to be neutered, they sent him home the same day. He got really sick and vomited, and my dad had to rush him straight back to the vet. I've heard that's a common problem when getting surgery.

Other than this one issue I prefer the new vet. When I called the old vet to ask about my puppy vomiting when he got sick one day, they said as long as he didn't vomit for over 24 hours not to worry about him. I think a Yorkie puppy would be dehydrated and hypoglycemic long before 24 hours were up! I think most of the advice they give is meant for large breed dogs. They gave him a rabies shot very young too, about 11 weeks.

So do you think he should be kept overnight? What are your experiences with neutering?

I've never had a dog neutered, always had females & spayed and they've always gone in early morning & come home that evening.

Rabies shot at 11 weeks in a yorkie??? :eek:

I'd change to the new vet. It seems your gut feeling is already telling you that...listen to it.

We've had many threads about this, and the thing I didn't know is that many vet will suggest staying all night EVEN THOUGH there is no one at the hosiptal to check on them. The believe that at least the dogs won't be over-stimulated as they might be at home, but if there was no one to check in on them, I think they would be much safer at home, at least you can get them to an emergency clinic. We took Joey home the same night, and just didn't let him climb the stairs or jump off furniture. Don't forget to follow instuctions concerning no food so many hours before surgery, that's why many dogs are sick afterwards. Best of luck!

I'm wondering if different states have different rules on this? In AZ it doesn't have to be given before 6 months, I think.

Same here in Michigan. And our vet has no problem pushing that back if you purchase an older puppy and it needs to complete its puppy shots first, because he won't give a small dog like a yorkie, the rabies shot until at least 2-3 weeks after puppy shots are complete.

We live in Hungary. When Sylvester was neutered at 8 months. He was out of our sight for 30 minutes. Our appointment was at 8 am and we were back home at 9:30 am. When he had 2 teeth removed we stayed with him the whole time.

He can go home the same day. That is fine (with some observation).

When choosing a vet to do surgery it should be one with a good anesthetic protocol and one that will not insist on keeping the dog overnight IF nobody is there to watch it.

My male did not stay overnight for neuter. My vet wanted to keep my female overnight for her spay and i refused since no one is there overnight and I live very close to an emergency vet. I honestly feel they are better off at home IF the owner is willing to go to an e vet if anything is wrong.

Thanks! I feel much better about taking him home the same day if the vet clinic doesn't check on them at night anyway. We check on him during the night, and it's easy enough to crate him to avoid overstimulation.

I think my state requires it by 4 months, but I had read it was better to do it at 6 months and had kind of planned on waiting until then, and just not taking him anywhere rabies shots are required until then. I didn't realize he was getting a rabies shot along with other shots until I saw the bill. He also put Frontline on him before I could say no. I had wanted to use the oral kind to avoid ruining his coat.

Also, I can't stand a couple of the vet techs who work for him. But I've been taking my older dog to him for so long, I feel disloyal for switching.:(

You aren't being disloyal. You're being an owner who looks out for their pup.

Drugging an animal without permission (Frontline) is not okay. They aren't supposed to just assume that you will agree to it.

I always take mine (Females) home the same day. There is no one at the vets office and I will stay up all night if I need to. Also, I live 5 minutes from a 24 hour state of the art ER facility.

It's always great when pet owners check these things out, and make sure the vet knows that Yorkies don't lose all their milk teeth on their own, most of us get the baby teeth pulled out during neutering, but some vets do not know this about yorkies. That way, they only have to go under once, it much less expensive and much safer to do it all at once.

Tibbe stayed the night as there was a vet tech there but otherwise, I would have brought him home. I wanted him there at the vet in case he needed something faster than I could get him back up there. I was able to call in a couple times overnight and check on him.

I have never heard this is a common problem. :confused: I think if you prefer the new vet, then go with the new vet. I would not continue to see a dr. myself I was not happy with them. Same for my pups. I became unsatisfied with our vet and we found one about 1 hr away and we LOVE him. Go with your gut.
Luckily, my vet allows animals to go home the day of surgery. When no one is there to watch them, I think it is a terrible idea to have them there unsupervised.
