Default Yeast infection

Have had our 3 yr. old yorkie two weeks. Have taken her in twice already to the tune of $350 to find our why she smells. Last week it was an ear infection, this week it is yeast infection. Spent $40 on shampoo, that doesn't seem to work and am not giving her two medications. Has anyone ever had something like this and how long does it take to cure, or is it a lingering thing.

What are you feeding her?

What exactly smells bad...her ears or her entire body? Does she itch, scratch, chew? Do her anal glands need done?

Have you had allergy tests done to see if an allergy could be causing this? Have you had any bloodwork or skin scrapings done to see if it could be an underlying health issue or mites causing it?

I would imagine this will need to be treated both from the inside and outside...if it's allergies or a staff infection from an ongoing infection it's going to need to be treated from the inside also...shampoo only sn't going ot cure it.

I hope you find the cause soon so she will feel better.

Why not give her two medications, if that's what the vet thinks is best?

Her whole body smells and she does scratch. They did a skin scraping and prescribed the oral medications, along with the shampoo. Don't know too much about her, since we've only had her two weeks. She is being fed Iams Healthy Naturals and a few tsps. of wet food mixed together. She feels great, just smells. The woman that we bought her from said she had to get rid of her because her son was allergic to him, think it was the offensive smell. She must have just bathed her when we got her.

What you describe sounds like she could be having food allergies. Has your vet mentioned food allergies ? I would try a hypoallergenic food of some kind. Food allergies do not clear up over night though so be patient. Are you using a shampoo to kill the yeast or regular shampoo ?

Not sure what shampoo you are using but I have found that( KetoChlor) works well for yeasty skin. It works best if you leave it on the dog for a few minutes though.

Raw coconut oil from the health food store is natural remedy for both humans and pets for both yeast and fungal infections. Can rub it on the sores. Google it. Put a t-shirt on her after to keep her from licking it off. Also have heard Selsun blue shampoo has been effective for some pets. You also may want to start the dog on Biocoat from Nickers International which can help build up her resistance to further skin issues and think it helps with yeast infections as well. Hope this info helps.

Two of three of my pups came home w/yeast infections in their ears...I don't know why they get them, maybe getting water in their ears, when bathing? Anyway, both times vet treated w/mometamax, and neither have had an issue since (2 1/2 & 1 1/2 years old)

She says we would try this first. We are using the medicated shampoo, actually today she is smelling a bit better. What would be a hypoallergenic food?

I use Natural Balance Duck & Potato and have had good results with it. However there are others out there so if that one doesn't work try another. Some do not have much flavor & I couldn't get any of mine to eat it but they all like this one. Hope your baby feels better soon as I know how crazy itchy they get with that darn yeast all over them, not to mention stinky.

coconut oil was a good natural suggestion. also looking into allergies as others have said. many pups have allergies to wheat which is in kibble.

yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of bad bacteria in our systems. repleneshing with good bacteria can help. get some organic, plain natural yogurt (not flavoured) and give some to the pup. that can help clear things up from the inside out. you could also get a good acidopholus pills to add extra good bacteria to the yogurt.

Lets go with the idea that commercial pet food is the root of all evil. Everytime I read about these babies being sick with one thing or another, I see where they all eat pet food. Here is more information on pet food, and as you can see, it's no wonder pets have such a difficult time being healthy and normal.

I had a pup who came to me with an awful yeast infection. My vet advised me to bathe him in Selsun Blue and to rinse him with warm water and vinegar (50/50 solution) 2-3 times/week. He started clearing up after the first week!
Before and after pics of him...they are a year apart....but shows how bad he was. He smelled awful.
I would continue the meds and the shampoo your vet ordered...and ask him about perhaps rinsing him with the water and vinegar solution. Vinegar is acidic and a fungus is base...so the vinegar counteracts it.

That's a good place to start....now you know WHY commercial dog foods are terrible for our yorkies...you need to see how the food you feed rates....and find a premium quality dog food that is healthier and more nutritious!! Any dog food you can purchase at a grocery store or walmart etc. is poor quality.. You have to go to a pet specialty shop to find high quality foods...

Here's where you can look up and find PREMIUM quality foods...also see how the food you are feeding rates on a 5 star rating system.

Dog Food Reviews | Dog Food Ratings

I probably post several times a week...offering this link....but clearly people just don't understand how feeding poor quality dog food can significantly increase health problems in their yorkies. And feeding high quality dog food...significantly IMPROVES overall health!

I just adopted a 10 yr. old yorkie a month or so ago, she had been fed grocery store dog food her whole life...She couldn't run...walked very slowly...just layed around all day...didn't interact much at all...and her coat was dull...
After being on EVO (5 star..grain-free) for a little over a month..she's a completely different yorkie...She runs CONSTANTLY...she plays with my babies...her overall energy level is very similar to my 3 year old...and her coat already looks shiny...
I attribute her dramatic change simply to her diet!!
