It makes me feel better because I didn't mess her up MORE than I would have by waiting a little longer, but not because perhaps I should have done more research and waited a LOT longer. However, I personally don't see myself waiting a year + to spay... soooo I guess in the end it makes me feel better. Thank you! :) |
Wouldn't worry too much for toy breeds. Chances of urinary incontinence go up the earlier you do it. Wouldn't be concerned about a month making a difference except for that aspect of it. Five months is really not that early anyway. I personally prefer for small breeds to be spayed before their first heat. Osteosarcoma is something I'm definitely not a fan of and it is not uncommon in large breeds, so with the larger breeds I get more concerned about s/n at 6-7 months and would consider waiting if I had a pup... |

I was going to add I would like to see this study and not just the abstract. Where breeds small breeds, large breeds? Where were these dogs aquired? Had the parents been tested and proved healthy? There are just so many factors that can determine the health of the pups, imo. I am not one who believes everything I read and know numbers and data can be manipulated to look many different ways. |
Could start with a few veterinary reproduction textbooks and see what you come up with.. Now sure if there is anything on pubmed right now or not. I do like seeing research to back things up, but in the end I will listen to board certified vets when in doubt. They are the experts in this area, and even if there was a study done (which there have been as far as I know), there is no way I could interpret the information as well as they could. So I think there is some trusting involved... I wouldn't say trust a breeder on the internet or trust an organization with an agenda, but the American College of Theriogenologists has enough weight for me to listen. Don't remember how much they say about the age of s/n and the outcome, but there is a clear increase in osteosarcoma and I think hemangiosarcoma. Just form other info I've seen, it would seem likely that holding off for awile would at least decrease the number of OSA cases. It is something I have become very interested in because there really is no one right answer except do what you have to do to assure your dog doesn't reproduce. |
