Blog about Paris' blindness Please check out my blog I have created about Paris going blind. Feel free to tell anyone about it that it may help. Paris the Blind WonderDog |
I may not have read this blog, had I not been keeping my son's 16 1/2 yr. old sheltie, Alladin...Alladin is blind and deaf, and it breaks my heart too...He's been w/me a week, and he too, has mapped the house out...I don't dare move anything, so as not to confuse him...I asked my previous vet, of 30 yrs., how you would know, when it was time to put a dog down, and he said, "when they don't wag their tail anymore"...Some of the best advice I've ever gotten...Alladin, still gives a very so slight wag, when I come in, so I know he still wants to be here...I'll be very interested to follow your blog...He seems to be able to see the shadows, outside, in the bright sunlight, but not so sure what he sees in the house...I've found myself leaving every light in the house on, to give him a little help, but not sure if he just follows his "house" map, or the lights...It's so hard, when these guys get old, but I guess we have to remember, if we're all blessed, we will also live to be a ripe old age too...Thanks for sharing, I'll be watching your blog... Paris is such a good boy. You and he are doing well dealing with the blindness. I had told you in another thread that my previous yorkie also went blind from either PRA or as we later suspected SARDS. I think it was originally misdiagnosed since she exhibited many of the SARDS symptoms that are not seen with PRA. SARDs has symptoms similar to Cushings. So we had those issues to deal with also. Jessie dealt pretty well with the blindness-much better than us. Did you ever get the book, Living with Blind Dogs? We found that helpful. Basically, she was ok if we didn't move things around. Techniques described in the book such as using sound, smell and texture in creative ways helped us. I always felt that Jessie's quality of life was still very good with the blindness. You are a good mommy and Paris will do fine. |
THank you both for reading the blog. It helped me alot to just write it. I will be updating it often so check back if you would like to. I will check out that book I read parts of it online. I have changed settings so if you want to comment there you can. Thanks again. |
I was deeply moved by your blog about Paris and Iam sure with your help that he can cope with his blindness. My 1st yorkie went blind at about 12 years old and it took me a little while for it to dawn on me , looking back I should have known as all the signs where there. At first he would just latch on to someone else in the dog park until he realised it was not me and then he started to bump into things but once he realised where everything was and nothing got moved he could get around. It is heartbreaking when they do bump into things but then I think they develope a softer way of walking around so that if they make a mistake it is not a disaster. Wishing you all the best and I will be keeping up with your blog. |
Thank you so much I am touched by your response. It is hard. This morning he bumped right into the dresser. What a way to start the day. |
You are such a good and caring Mom to Paris. I hope he gets used to navigating his way around using his other senses. Sending good wishes and prayers to you and Paris. |
Thanks sammy mommy! |
Thanks to all who took a minute to read about Paris. I am touched by your caring. So is Paris! |
The patio furniture looks great with the padding on !! Brilliant idea, so Paris does not hurt himself. What is it about yorkies and dark areas of garden, mine will allways try to get behind shrubs and bushes , I think they must love expoloring. Paris seems to be still having a very full day and seems very happy, you are doing a great job with him.:animal-pa |
thank you for starting this blog! mickey's 15 y/o and his eyes are getting white.... i know it will happen to him soon so reading about paris will def help us get through this phase.... <3 p.s im like getting teary eyed reading the blog |
Great stuff! Love the sleeping bag. |
Paris' eyes are not white. If you look at the photos they shine green. White eyes could be a sign of glacoma. Paris doesn't have any glacoma. I am glad you are enjoying the blog. I am having fun writing it.:) |
