Giving my boy a variety of different kibble
 
I have bags of Orijen, Taste of the Wild, and Blue Buffalo. Knox likes all three of them. He seems to prefer the one he hasn't had in a while. Since none of them cause loose stools or anything, do you think rotating the three foods daily could be problematic? I know most vets suggest picking a good food and sticking with it, but I wouldn't want someone to do that to me. Anything gets old after a while. Plus, it would seem to me that if one of the foods had a deficiency, the effect would be minimized if he only ate it about 1/3 of the time. Interested in your thoughts???

Supplementing the dry food with fresh, unprocessed foods like vegetables, fruit, yogurt, meat or a bit of canned food is also safe and healthy.

I was doing just as the article suggests with Taste of the Wild. I was sticking to the same brand but switching flavors pretty often. I went out of town over the weekend, and I picked up some Orijen, since so many people here seem to prefer it. Plus I have half bag of Blue Buffalo I want to use up before it gets old. Thanks for the advice. About how long does kibble last if you store it in a big tupperware container? Since I have three bags. hahaha

There's a date on the bag, but usually it's best to store in the bag, or a bag that you can squeeze excess air out of. I know people love their Tupperware, and if the food goes right to the top of the container, with little excess air on top, it will stay freshest the longest. A big container with 4 or more inches of air on top will not keep the food as fresh. Thoroughly wash containers after usage, because oils at the bottom can cause new food to go rancid faster. If you have room in the freezer, that's the best.

Will it hurt the excess food to be stored in the freezer? I was wondering that. I have thought of doing that but wasn't sure if I should.

Freezing kibble concerns me. I believe it exposes kibble to unwanted moisture, even if the bag is factory sealed.

Once a kibble bag is opened, I would use it within 30 days (at most) or toss it. Unopened bags, use before their expiration date and always store in a cool, dry place.

Actually your freezer should be very dry, if you put a piece of meat in the freezer it dries out the surface, think of air conditioning, it dry out the air. If you see ice crystals on food, it's from the moisture inside the food or your freezer isn't working property. The freezer is fine, but it's not necessary, unless you are storing for a very long time.

I was thinking of writing one of the premium dog food companies to see wht they said but did a google and a previous Yorkietalk thread came up: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/842851-post14.html It is a pretty detailed response from Innova. Makes sense!

Although they don't recommend freezing, they only mention palatability as the issue. If your dog is liking and eating it after freezing, then that would seem not to be an issue.

I don't see any problems with rotating kibbles at all. :) I do it with no issues and it keeps Jackson surprised every time at meal time.

Thank you Nancy. I understand now that some of the moisture I see on things in the freezer is also from opening the door and letting warm air in that immediately condenses. (I never would have made through science classes in HS if it weren't for my lab partners :p)

Oh, I never even thought about opening and closing the door, but you're right. Air here in AZ is so dry!
