| Of course you can take it a bit off topic. It's been an interesting/educational/fun thread.

| I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | The reason we talk of frozen green beans is there is no salt added as in the canned kind. I always thaw the green beans in microwave for about 30 seconds. They are partially cooked before freezing, so dogs don't have a problem digesting them. I don't know about fresh ones, we've had discussions on it, and I'm not sure what was the conclusion as to how long they need to be cooked.

| I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I don't think you have to cook them, if you've ever eaten one thawed, you can see they are completely different than fresh. Some people even give them frozen. I just think if you cook to much, they might lose some of their fiber benefits, but I really don't know.

| Oh! I didn't mean that I feed them while frozen... I use boiling water to warm up their food and I boil extra to set the green beans in till they're thawed real well. I don't really like canned bc some chemicals are added sometimes to the lining of the can to help retain color. Frozen I like because they're always at their peak of ripeness and stay that way till I use them. If I use fresh I chop them up real tiny and give them a soak in boiling water for a while.... I figure dogs like to eat grass and a little bit doesn't usually hurt them.... plus mine are on probiotics and digestive enzymes all the time to help keep them in balance... so they can digest anything they eat... whether they want to or not!

With raw diets, I believe you're supposed to rotate from muscle meat, to organs, including the stomach and contents and intestines... which introduces grains at some point. As for expressing glands, I look while I place my hand, but once I locate the glands and feel I'm in position, my tendency is to look away.... I do use the kleenex stuffed in my hand too to catch the stream/dribble. Plus you can usually smell it if you are successful or not...

| I used to get kinda worried b/c I'd express Ellie's glands and was never shown how by her vet. Then I'd come here and read that this was not okay. Always have a professional show you. It's too easy to cause damage. So I had a convo with the vet about it. She told me the opposite. There is no special way that a vet or groomer expresses glands. It is not easy to cause damage. She squeezes very hard even when a problem is suspected. So just another opinion. It is not as scary a procedure as what it may sound. As always, that is just the opinion of Ellie's vet, so ask your own if it's okay. The first time I tried to do it internally though, I felt terrible b/c, ah, my finger is bigger than that area and KY jelly wasn't doing a ton of good. But we both go used to it.
