Does scratching of the ear automatically mean something is wrong or bad?
Should healthy dogs not scratch their ears at all? | An occasional scratch could well be nothing at all. But since our pups cannot talk, we have to take every sign they give us and check it out. Just as KJC told you above, look for the possibility of those things. If you are not confident in identifying mites, fungus and other ear infections, have your vet check them out. I have one of the ear scopes for humans that I can look closer with. Drug stores sell them cheaply. If you don't see any sign of a problem otherwise, and the scratching is only a couple of seconds occasionally, then you could probably just wait til the pups next vet check and mention it so the vet could look more closely.
Another cause of scratching can be diet. Yorkies need a premium diet. They are little and only eat a little so I figure we can afford to give them the best ;)
One more thing to make sure of is rinsing all shampoo from their hair. Rinse, rinse, and rinse some more. Jut a little shampoo left in their hair can cause itching and flaking. |
