Let puppy feed freely all the time? Hi everyone, i am an absolute newbie by YT. We're getting our baby, Kyuubi next Thursday. We visited him once a week since he was 5 weeks old, and he would be 9 weeks oldby Thursday. He weigh 1,2 lbs at 8,5 weeks. Now, my question is, should i let out his food all the time so that he could freely feed? That's what the breeder's doing at the time, and she recommended continuing to do so until he's 1 yr old. He was born into a 7-puppy-litter and is the smallest one, so I'm really concerned about healthy feeding. Thanks for your answer in advance:) |
I believe in free feeding, especially with puppies and even more so with the tiny puppies. That way they can balance their own blood sugar better. It may make potty training a little more difficult until you figure their routine. If they start getting overweight, that is reason to stop the free feeding. Otherwise, I think it is the best answer for our little ones. Mine are all free fed and stay lean. |
I prefer free feeding also. I have three dogs, two of which are very picky. I have tried it both ways and the free feeding worked better for them so all three are free feeders. |
mine are all free fed and wouldn't want it any other way :) |
What do you feed your picky eater's? I have an older lab/mix that is 3yrs old. We feed her twice daily sometimes 3. Our Yorkie 10weekish is not wanting to eat. I leave it out for him keeping my finger's crossed ;) Still not sure if he is picky from the Parvo or if he is just going to be picky! Quote:

I hope your little one eats good for you! I know if we don't offer him food often he has blood sugar issues often! I'm still learning the right things to do for our little guy.... Quote:

In the past, I have free fed dogs until 12 weeks or 3 pounds, whichever comes last. After that, I do 3 meals a day until 1 year old. My adults are fed 2x daily with an afternoon "snack" |
I have always free fed their kibble. Now mine do not eat that much as they are feed raw on a schedule. But if we are out on appointments and cannot meet the designated time then they have the kibble to fall back on. |
Thank you for your answers. I think I would free feed my baby at first. Let's see how it goes with houstraining. Do you free feed your babies and watch them carefully until you let them relieve or how do you do that? |
I free feed my baby because he is so tiny. He is 10 weeks old and only weighs 1.5 pounds. |
do i need to feed freely on my 5 month old puppy? he weight 5 lb now and he likes to eat a lot. |
I started free feeding both my Yorkies from day one and still doing it ( they are 1,5 and 2 years old) I started it because I was afraid of hypoglycemia and I never had any problems. Now they seam to eat twice a day and they haven't got any weight issues. They don't eat at the same time and I believe that they should choose their schedule as long as they are not overfed. Puppies should eat as much as they want. The only thing that you should check is that they do actually eat because Yorkies have a hypoglycemia issue. More Yorkies have a problem of not eating than with overfeeding. What worked for me with hypoglycemia was honey. Just put your finger in honey and let them lick it once a day. Maria |
I free feed Poppy because she can be quite fussy. |
Once Cesar was totally house broken I let him feed freely. It isn't a big deal because he only eats 1 bowl per day anyway. He just finished off the rest of what was in his bowl about 15 minutes ago and I'll feed him in the morning. |
1 bowl = ? cup? |
