Sounds like she came from terrible conditions. I seriously doubt she was inside and using a piddle pad! The woman more than likely lied to you. It is probably going to take some time for Chloe to come around...just give her time and I think she will be fine. I would discourage her from eating cat food. She needs to eat dog food for proper nutrition. The breeder is full of you know what....she is not missing where she was or the company of other dogs. She is sad because she has had nothing good in her life. Hopefully that is now over! :) I hope you hang in there with her. Please feel free to PM me any time if you need advice. |
I had a similar situation with a dog I had gotten at an animal shelter. She had recently had puppies and would not eat for the first 3 days we had her. My husband went to the shelter and asked to contact the previous owners. They would not give him the phone number, but he got them to dial the number for him and he was able to speak with them. He found out the brand of dog food she had been eating when she was with them. We bought a bag, and that was all it took, she gobbled it down and became the best family pet, even though we had our doubts at first. I suggest contacting the person you got your dog from and ask what brand of dog food they had. If it is low quality, slowly add in some better dog over time. |
Don't get discouraged she will soon learn to trust you. It takes time when they have been mistreated. |
Update I want to let everyone know that slowly it is getting better. She gets excited and wags her tail when she sees me and comes to me now. But she's still scared of everything. The vitamin syrup that the vet gave her to make her have an appetite did work. She ate so much that day. I havn't given it to her since since she's been eating normal now thru out the day. |

Lady jane... I feel that way too. It just doesn't add up with what she's telling me to what kind of dog Chloe seems to be. All her and her mom tell me is how much they miss her and loved her.. but I feel if they did they wouldn't have been in such a hurry to get rid of her. Basically they said in other words... "Since she can't have puppies, she's no good." That's the impressing I got when they talked about what she's been thru and how quick they are to get rid of her. juliet...She is on puppy chow that the lady gave me. So it's still the same food. I guess she's just so depressed and scared that she didn't want to eat. Marcie.... I am trying to be patiant. I just have never had a dog this scared and take this long to open up. Usually in the past it would have been maybe a few hours to 2days... but not weeks like this. And in that past 2 weeks there has been little progress wich worries me. |

lady jane... the more trust she seems to give to me the more I feel there is hope, the more I feel I have a responsibility to make her feel safe and at home. It seems that this experience is helping both of us. Kind of like when someone ends up having a kid, that doesn't like kids, and doesn't find out till later in the kids life... how it makes them both learn from each other...like in the movies with. |

I still need help. She hasn't changed. Still scared and still won't use the puppy pad. I have noticed at the dog park that she does enjoy other small dogs that are layd back. So I was wondering if there is anyone who is out there that may be willing to give her a good home where there is no children, no cats or big dogs, but does have a small dog for her to play with.. I hate to get rid of her but she is soo depressed and like my boy friend said, "She's not happy." |
I hope you find the patience to try a little longer with Miss Chloe. Is the puppy pad in a busy area? She might need a more private place. You could also try some of the scent sprays and spray it on the pad. It sounds like the original owners were mean to her and she is still reacting to her old life. Just like with a foster child it takes time to for a dog to feel safe in an new home and with new owners. I know it seems like a long time but she has only been with you a little while and it sounds like you have made progress with her. I wish you and Miss Chloe the best and hope thing work out for the both of you. |
I keep her puppy pad in the bathroom and i do use to puppy spray but still no luck. I have locked her in the bathroom to use it but she won't then come out and pee and poop in the living room. I soak the pee with the puppy pad so she can get the smell on the pad to know to go there but it hasn't worked either. She does good when I can take her outside but I live in an apartment and can't just open the door and let her out. That's why I think she needs to try to be where there is a yard for her. |
