Gassy dog problem OK Reno has the worst gas I have ever known. I think he has gone potty somewhere and when I check it is just he has passed gas! Anyone any suggestions on what to do for this problem. Could it be the change in diet? I have no idea what the puppy mill was feeding him - probably something cheap. |
I noticed that both Max and Lily had that issue until I started using a digestive enzyme. I think gas is suggestive of digestion problems. |

check the ingredience onthe dog food bag if it has soy in ithe ingredience list it will make them have gas also. just a suggestion. Linda, Sassy and Patti |
It could just be the change in diet, and he just needs time to adjust. Is he a gulper when it comes to food or water- that can cause excess gas, too (if it goes in, it needs to come out...) You could also try probiotics to help with digestion. |

I think it maybe because of the change in food for Reno. |

Any particular brand or anything for the probiotic or digestive enzyme. Can I get it at Petco or a feed store??? |
Fizz does the same thing to her food...I assumed she was hunting it down and 'subduing' it to enhance her enjoyment of her dinner. :p As for the gas, I will follow this post with interest as Fizz on occasion can clear a room. We attributed it to the duck strips we use for training - but could be wrong. |

I believe petco has a different brand. I got mine at a hollistic pet food store. I think this is the one I saw at Petco..I compared the ingredients and they are very similar if not the same. http://www.petco.com/product/111201/...-for-Pets.aspx |

I just googled Prozyme and came up with this: Prozyme at PETCO So hopefully they will have it in the store. It says 1/4 teaspoon to each cup of food. I free feed the dogs, but could just put a cup down at a time. I assume it will be OK for all three dogs to have it. They are all on dry food. This is all new to me, having to add something to the food, and I have had dogs since 1984. Guess I have been lucky. |

As far as probioitics- you can go the easy route and just give plain, non fat yogurt if the boys will tolerate dairy. Otherwise, Petco carries a couple different brands. |
Another thing to try is a little plain yogurt for a few days. This will help establish the "friendly" bacteria that eats up the stuff causing gas. I just got some new treats from Walmart and I think they are causing my Jack Russell, Candy to get gassy. I know what you mean when you wrote it smells like they have gone in the house. I am going to try the yogurt for her and see if it helps. Otherwise the treats are being tossed! Soy and excess fiber in the food will do it too. Some dogs just have delicate digestive systems, which my Candy does. A little off the normal path, or something with too much fiber and peeeeyooooo! If it is still happening with quality food and no other sources of problem, then I would get some digestive enzymes as others suggested. I haven't had to get any just yet. I have always had good luck with yougurt or some pumpkin (if any diarrhea comes along). |
Thanks Debra I was hoping to get Bruce to take me to Petco today, but he wasn't up to it. Hopefully he will be feeling better tomorrow or even Monday to take me. It may be the change in diet that is making Reno gassy. I have no idea what the puppy mill was feeding him, but it probably wasn't good quality food. The only treats the dogs get are the ones I make myself, and they are just the chicken jerky and the beef jerky - just the meat with nothing added. Unfortunately I don't have any plain yogurt in the house as I don't use it for anything. Not a big yogurt fan. |
