Unfortunately we are giving up on RAW!! After several battles with both home made raw and a produced raw medallion diet by both NV and Primal we are giving it up. It's not that raw is not great and healthy for them, it's just not user and travel friendly. We can't feel good about friends and family feeding our pets because of the hassle of thawing out the raw in the fridge and we can't take the raw stuff with us without yet another bout of bacteria showing up in their GI. Everytime we don't do something exactly right we end up with high vet bills and sick dogs. Now with two sick dogs i'm just done with it. it'd be so much easier to just scoop out really hollistic and natural kibble into a bowl and let em' eat up. no more thawing frozen in the fridge or worrying if it's not set out in time or having the struggle with boarding or having a pet sitter....we're giving it up and going kibble.... now what the heck should we switch to??????? |
I would encourage you to research Wysong foods, they do offer a dry raw food, Archetype and many other choices, they suggest you rotate foods. I've used their products for several years now, even transitioning foster dogs to Wysong, I've never had one develop diarrhea bc of the food change. Plus....they all love it! I trust them to have my pets best interest at heart and not just their bottom-line. Wysong had no products involved in the food recalls from a couple of years back. ACANA!! :thumbup: All the way. Orijen and Acana are some of the best kibbles out there, IMO. Champion Petfoods | Home Check out their video on their site, Jackson eats better food than I do. lol. Other than that, the only other foods I'd feed are Go! Endurance and Nature's Variety Instinct. I always rotate between bags too. We do Acana Grasslands, Acana Prairie Harvest and Go Endurance right now. As well as rotating canned foods so he gets a nice variety in different protein sources, meat, etc. We usually buy NV Instinct cans, Go! cans, Wellness Core, etc. |

Stella & Chewy's offers freeze-dried raw patties which are perfect for traveling. My girls rotate between Primal and Stella & Chewy's raw, and Orijen Regional Red is our back-up kibble. There is no reason you can't keep a kibble in the rotation with the raw if you wanted too. :) |

I can totally relate to what you are saying. I raised Barney and Daisy on home cooked foods exclusively for five years and travel was a pain. I ended up doing 50/50 home cooked and kibble for a while along with some canned foods. I liked that approach the best because I could still feed fresh unprocessed food but I ended up going back to 100% home cooked. It is a commitment and we travel often but with good preparation and good petsitters, it can be done. It is not for everyone and it gets easier but there are always those days when I have nothing in the freezer and have to stop what I am doing after working all day to start cooking. I'm also the only one at obedience school with tiny pieces of chicken breast, baby carrots and steamed green beans. |
Max couldn't tolerate the Raw either. He's since had other issues and probably has IBD. He's on Wellness Simple Solutions duck and rice; both canned and kibble. Lily does well on the Natural Balance too. |

Either Orijen or Go Natural - I believe that there are no fillers, corn, etc. and our three pups love both and seem to digest things easily. Good luck! |
i think i might try a little stella and chewy's and see how that goes, i also might get a few free samples of kibbles at the local dog boutique. they carry orijen and canidae and such. they also have fromm and a few others i'd like to try. thanks for the help. going tomorrow to find a new food. |
have you tried honest kitchen or ziwi peak? Honest kitchen is dehydrated you addd water to it, sort of remindes me of oatmeal, the ziwi peak is an air dryed raw, no freezer needed, my guys switch between primal,nv,aunt jenny, stella and chewy, both the frozen and dehydrated, ziwi peak and honest kitchen. If you email both honest kitchen and ziwi peak they will send you a sample to try. |
we went out and got Orijen the white fish and potato formula and gave em' just a sampler taste of it today...THEY LOVE IT. and i love that there are NO grains and many many fish varieties! no worries about itchies and extra fish oils for their allergies and coat and skin support!! YAY. we also are going to try Fromm fish and potato food and maybe canidae... i think i'm going to supplement their kibble diet with a little venison, bison, pheasant, rabbit, and beef raw diets so that they get more meat variety but when we travel they get more kibble and it's just easier!! i'm sad to see that almost all meat diets in kibble contain chicken or meal or fat...Sadie is allergic to chicken! :( but this is where the raw supplementing comes into play she\'ll get her beef and bison that way! :D |
i feed aunt jeni\'s raw food; however since my dog has ibd i slightly cook it and add oatmeal to it. that way i can freeze it and take it on the road if needed; just like homecooked food. of course not an convenient as kibble or canned; but much more nutritious. |
