UPDATE: Today is day 3 of the poop-free pineapple method. This morning he pooped and caught it mid air. However, he spit it out!! :D He then gobbled some of it, spit out some of it, and I cleaned the rest as quickly as possible.

This is the first time that he realized something was different. Thank you so much! I really think this method is going to help us.

Yes, just give them ALL pineapple. With the huskie you could start with 6 or 8 pieces a day and work your way up from there since he is a big dog. The Bichon and Paris could have the 4 pieces or so per day. But just remember you will need to adjust the amount if needed and be consistent.

Great news! :) Keep you eye on Max and if he continues to even pick it up you should increase by one or two pieces a day. If he is only picking it up you are headed in the right direction.

In our house, the minute we stop pineapple, Teddy Bumpkins starts his bad acts. So it's become an every day treat, and all three can tolerate pineapple and love it. Here is Teddy with his daily dose. See how easy rehab can be??

I had the exact same result. As soon as I stopped, it started again. This thread reminded me to get back on the pineapple. We are on day 2 and we are still "enjoying" our poopy. ;) But it is only day 2. It'll take another few days yet.

Hmmm...will have to try this pineapple method. We have two Yorkies at home. The oldest has never been interested in poop but my 5 month old puppy on occassion likes to try her own or any kind of animal poop. I tried to figure out why she did it. It seemed atleast when eating her own poop she ate it when having an accident in the home and could care less about it if she went outside but it is so tough to really figure out why she does it. Will see if she'll eat some pineapple for me as a daily treat. So far she has turned up her nose to all fruits I have tried to feed her.

My baby used to eat his own poop but only when he had an accident inside so we figured that he's hiding evidence. Once he's potty trained to go outside, this behavior stopped. He never tries to eat his poop outside. And I always pick it up with tp and flush down the toilet so my lawn stays clean and he's not tempted to eat it.

Thanks for the link. My vet believes Max is eating his poop because the new seizure medication he's on is increasing his appetite. And, boy is it ever! He eats like a machine. The pineapple seems to be working though.

I've read things like this before so recently I asked the board certified vet nutritionist and she told me that coprophagia is a behavioral issue and that it is a myth that it is related to nutrition.

Pineapple works for us, Teddy smells better with pineapple breath, so whether it is a myth or not, I keep a steady supply of pineapple chunks in our freezer. I think I have no less than 3 bags at a time!

Behavioral huh? I'm not surprised.

Oh no, i bought the canned pineapple chunks in pineapple juice. I need to buy the frozen!

This is how I look at a poop eater~it really doesn't matter why they are eating their poop but how you stop the behavior. Whether it is one reason or 20 reasons it all boils down to a really gross behavior that most people want to stop.

Can I used canned pineapple or is there too much sugar? I wasn't even thinking.

You can use the canned as long as its packed in pineapple juice.
