Chicken jerky Jackson loves chicken jerky treats. They are his absolute favorite. Any type of them. He's super picky about what treats he will take, and chicken jerky is his thing and he will do anything for them! LOL. Anyways, I stopped buying Waggin' Train brand after knowing it was made in China, as are most dog chicken jerky strips. I'm just not comfortable with that. I've only found one brand, Dog Jerky, Jerky Dog Treats, Chicken Jerky Dog Treats, made in the USA - Home | Kona's Chips, that seem of high quality. They're a bit pricey though when shipping is added in. $17.89 for a 12oz bag plus $8 shipping. I like to buy in bigger quantities like 12oz, etc. Any other cheaper places to get 100% USA made chicken jerky? |
Hi :) How about these Plato Dog Treats - Organic Chicken Strips - Free Shipping $14.79 1lb bag They are made in the USA too. They have a bunch of chicken treats, you can search by protein source. I just looked through and found a bunch of treats I want for they boys  If you order from them, you might as well stock up on their free samples too ;) |

Those are Izzy's favorite too... The Vita life ones are from china too... :(... I dont mind buying online, but it's nice to have ones that i can pick from the store when run out all of the sudden... I guess I'll have to stick up :) |

They trick you too, because Waggin' Train for example says something like "USA made chicken" on the front of the bag, but look on the back and in tiny letters it's "Made in China!" I had found another brand at Petco that said USA chicken so I started buying it... only to find tiny tiny print on the very bottom of the bag "Made in China" :( All the Dogswell ones are too. |

This is what I found.... I'm outraged!!!!!!!! The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States recently cautioned dog owners of a possible link between their dogsbecoming ill and the consumption of chickenjerky products. This alert comes in the wake of the FDA receiving more than 70 complaints from dog owners whose dogs had eaten the chicken jerky treats and became ill; sadly in a couple of cases the dogs died. The FDA has yet to determine what caused these dogs' illnesses. Despite extensive testing of the products in question, no contaminant has been found. The products being investigated by the FDA are Bestro’s Chicken Jerk Stfrom Import-Pingyang Pet Product Co., both sold by Wal Mart. Dogs Dogsthat have become ill have shown some or all of the following symptoms: decreased food consumption, although some may continue to consume the treats to the exclusion of other foods; decreased activity or lethargy; vomiting; diarrhea, sometimes with blood; and increased water consumption and/or increased urination. If your dog has eaten chickenijerky treats and is showing any of the above symptoms, take him to a vet as soon as you can. |
What about making your own? I found this older thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...erky-dogs.html |
Dehydrator I bought a dehydrator and make my own chicken jerky. You can add your own spice, even change it up each time. It is much better for the little ones. I did a test before. If you put the store-bought jerky in water overnight, nothing changes. But if you put home-made (dehydrated) jerky in water overnight, the jerky puffs back into chicken strips. The only thing is that they don't last very long. You will have to refrigerate them. Great in summer but in winter need thaw out first. But this tells me that the store bought ones have preservatives. Some of them said no preservatives but they still last so long....wonders why. |
Homemade jerkey I make my own. I buy boneless skinless chicken breast at Winn Dixie when they're on sale. Freeze them individually. Take one out at a time & as it's thawing cut it up in thin strips (easier to cut) Put on cookie sheet w/ parchment paper & cook at 200 degrees for two hours. Turn & continue cooking until crispy. Freeze until needed, then refrigerate. Best treat my dogs have ever had!! |
We dehydrate too. 3-4 hours in the dehydrator - rotate the trays every hour. We dehydrate turkey breast and venison. I break them up into bite size pieces and freeze in sandwich bags. No spices, no salt - just the meat. Its best to cut the meat when its partially frozen. |
i have some in the oven as we speak... i'm so happy about this!! i should have done it earlier :) |

When her Kona's Chips come [they are shipped USPS Priority Mail or sometimes Overnite] and I immediately put them in the freezer. She loves them straight from the freezer.:thumbup: I admire those of you who can dehydrate yourselves ... I simply do not have time nor the "talent" for that sort of thing. Meanwhile, I thank God every day that we discovered Kona's and our little one is so happy with them!:thumbup: |
Are you sure the chicken strips are made in China, or the packaging is made in China? I get confused sometimes as there is nothing to differentiate between the two in some products. Sometimes, and it's rare, a package will say packaging made in China, product made in _______. |
[QUOTE=bettyeanne;3238789]Poor Izzy ... I'd be willing to bet that's exactly what's wrong with her. Toto gets her strip in the evening and her little system knows exactly what time! She is also very prompt. :) That's when she "dances" and she will dance like crazy for her Kona's strips. LOL After a day of no strip, she would get in my lap, put her little paws on my chest and absolutely beat on me, staring into my eyes with the most pitiful look and cry! She also lost her appetite for anything else although she has always, always eaten her regular diet and only gets her chicken as a nighttime "treat"! We developed a big hate for anything "Made in China"! When she went through all the tests, the only thing that showed up was high numbers in her little kidneys. Our vet was furious and believes, as do we, that had this gone unnoticed we would surely have eventually lost her. This morning i gave her one that I made last night... She killed it!! she wanted more so I caved and let her have one .. She's my baby...she has me wrapped  |

I buy Dogswell brand chicken jerkie called Breathies. Made in China but sold at Whole Foods so I feel ok with buying them since Whole Foods is generally picky on sourcing and fair trade etc. Never had anyone get sick from them and they sure do love them. |

Well, we ordered some Kona's Chips so hopefully he likes them! I'm sure he will. He's never been picky about chicken jerky! |

All the ones I have ever seen at Costco are made in China. I have heard (from reps at a Pex Expo) that Dogswell follows the same standards they would have to in the US even though they are from China, but I still am not comfortable giving them to my girls. It's a shame too since so many of their products look to be healthy. |
Thank you! Thank u for posting this thread. I got chicken treats from petsmart a month ago .. my babies love them but my Lilly got sick from them! I did not see on the fine print made in chim=na until after she was sick. She was sick on her tummy but kept a bad cough for 2 weeks after. the vet said she was allergeic to the treats! I trashed them! She is better now but had to be on meds for a while. I will give them a try. She eats chicken breast all the time so I know she ok with chicken. Vet said it was something in the product it's self. I will make sure to order from this link... I had rather pay more for them then end up at the vets again. Thanks again for the post..:) |

I know the ones that I made I'm keeping in the fridge...So I think if your getting a 12oz bag I would keep them in the fridge too just to be on the safe side :) |
I make my own too, as well as beef and lamb strips. The homemade thread has some great recipes. |
I make my own also....use a food dehydrator. I get skinnless/boneless chicken breasts and freeze them till they are just firm enough to be able to cut thinly.....I normally do mine at night so that by morning they are ready to go....my little one loves them, but I love them also....so now need to make extra batches...one for me and one for lil one.. :) |
I got the Kona chips and although pricy the dogs just love them. I got two bags of the 12 oz size and keep them in the refrigerator I know with 4 dogs they won't last long. I am going to try making my own. |
