Sad puppy? Hi. I just got my first dog ( a Yorkie yay! ) yesterday morning. He came exhausted with a car from another city. I brought him home and he ate A LOT of royal canin junior and some canned food. Then we played a little and he started sleeping. He woke up some hours after, played a bit and went back to sleep. The problemms are that he is very sad, tired, he sleeps A LOT, won't eat anything, he had some diareeah and vomited a bit. We took him to a vet. He gave him some pills and made him eat but now he won't eat anything and is still sleeping. He is 8 weeks old. |
He is very young like a newborn. He will probably sleep a lot - as babies do. Is the Royal Canin what he had been on before your brought him home? How big is your little one? |

The vet said he might be sick because of the night trip. |
Also, the vet made him an injection to relax his stomach or something like that... |

He is very young and very light. His weight is very small. This means you need to be aware of and concerned with hypogyclemia. Get some Nutrical. This is a supplement. If not that then sugarey water. Make sure he has feedings every 3 hours or so. Even if only a tablespoon or so, better more than that, but at least a tablespoon. Also as earlier person said, he is still very young, here we recommend pups don't go home prior 12wks old and 3 pounds. When we got our boy he was 13 wks and just over 3lbs. He was so tiny to our eyes and hands. We were so worried. But he did well and is a thriving six pound boy. |
Yorkies at that age will sleep a lot, they are very young. (Yorkies shouldn't leave their mothers until 12 weeks either). The stress from the car ride could have stressed your little pup out or possibly a parasite, did the vet do a fecal? Congratulations on your new baby:) What is his name? |

ZOMG while writng I gave him some water with sugar and he started drinking it. Btw, his name is Nero. |
Lol why I have to wait foor a mod to post more messages/ |
Nvm, His name is Nero:D If by fecal you mean looking at the poop, he wanted to, but the dog didn't poop. He is now drinking water with some sugar, is that good? |
When we played yesterday, he had so much energy, jumping everywhere and chasing me around the house, now even if he is awake, he won't play. He just sits. |

Ah.....also, make sure you are giving him filtered or bottle water....as changing water can upset his digestive tract. Feed him a bit every 2 hours. Also, as someone suggested Nutri-Cal or NutriDrops. Becareful with the Nutri-Cal as it can bring on a hyperglycemic attack if you don't follow the directions and over use it. It can also contribute to sugar diabitis. |
I just wanted to wish you luck with your new little one. As another person said, he is just a teeny baby and should still be with his mom. Mardelin is a good resource as she knows what she's saying. Good luck and enjoy your new little one. |
Thanks! :D 1 more question, putting some sugar in his water, is that good? |
Your baby is very new and tiny--I would feed rice cereal with goat's milk until he is a bit older...you need to feed him at least every 2 hours--and make sure he is drinking filtered water. Keep track of him---he is very fragile at this moment. |

Last time he ate something was 10 hours ago |
Go out and get supplies! Actually send someone else while you monitor your baby. He hasn't touched food in 10 hours? He must be completely lethargic. Offer him some warm wet food. Heat it up in a pan a little, don't make it too hot. When wet food is warmed up the smell is a lot stronger, which might entice him to eat something. You might even have to take him to the vet. |
He won't et it. He will just turn his head. We're going to a vet in the morning, it's 22.30 here. i'll go try with some wet food... |

Ummm no karo syrup here and I can't imagine where to get it in Romania... Should I give him some honey? |
At his age, and if he is getting lethargic, you may need to use your finger to scoop some canned food in to the front of his mouth- just a finger nail size at a time. Once it's in his mouth, he should reflexively chew and swallow. Do you have nutrical on hand? If not, a small dollop of Karo syrup will work in a pinch to help bring up his sugars. Just make sure you follow that up with some protein such as canned food or slivers of cooked chicken, otherwise his sugars could rebound and drop even farther. Once you've gotten a little bit of food in to him, let him rest a bit. 8 weeks is young and he's had a very busy day. It's quite normal for the ones this small to sleep 18 hours or more a day (though not in one sitting!) Give him an hour or so to rest, and then offer more food again. Above all, breathe. These little ones are scary to us first timers. Become familiar with the signs of hypoglycemia so that you can act quickly if need be. Keeping him warm will also help reduce stress (his and yours). Hypoglycemia often seen in tiny or underfed yorkie puppies and Yorkshire Terrier adults |

Don't give honey. Natural honey can have bacteria in it that can make your puppy sick. |

Take 1 cup water and bring to a boil Add 1 cup sugar, stir until dissolved. Reduce heat and let mixture boil down until slightly thickened. Cool completely before use. Again though, any time you use something like a karo syrup or simple sugar syrup or nutrical, it is important that you get some type of protein in to them also. The sugar will spike and then crash if they don't have a slower burning protein. |
