New food is making a huge difference in my dogs! Two weeks ago or there about, I switched my dogs to Taste Of The Wild dog food, The Bison and Venison formula. OMG I cant believe the difference it has made in my dogs over all health and well being. I did not even know that a change of this magnitude could be brought on just by a change in diet. The biggest change has been in my one of my Bichon's. This dog is 7 years old and she has never been very active! she usually just likes to sit around or lay in my lap.Well now she is acting like a puppy again.:D I can not believe it. Even my 16 yr old said to me today. Holy crap mom what got into Daizy?? She is even initiating play with the other dogs. She was running around the yard today, chasing the cat, and pouncing after a grasshopper. and running up to me with that paws down tail up posture they do, barking at me trying to get me to play with her. Its like a totally differnt dog..lol..I havent seen this behavior out of her since she was 1 yr old..and my 5 yr old golden retriever. who has been to lazy to play for about 3 years, was playing fetch today. usually if we throw her toy she will just look at us like "yea right, you go get it" Well we were amazed when I was playing fetch with Bella and Riley and she took off and got the toy and brought it back. and she did this for about 20 minutes...sorry if I am rambling but I am in awe. I just had to share. Anyone else ever have a change like this after a food change? |
That is outstanding. I may try some on my wife! Now fom't get me going on Venison and buffalo! Best of luck, and glad they are dojng great on the new chow. |
Dont give my hubby any ideas..lmao |
Forget giving it to my husband!! I need to try it for myself!! LOL |
Is bison and venison high in fat and/or protein? How about duck? I'm looking for a new food for Uni. |
I feed the same formula. Everyone does very well on it, and - being the person responsible for "clean up" - *I* appreciate what comes out the other end. My pups also have excellent teeth ... no tartar or anything. The vet marvels at their teeth and always tells me to keep up the good work with the brushing and all - and I've never brushed their teeth, not once. And they're pushing 3. To Uni's Mommy, it's high protein, but it's grain free, so it's all animal protein (the good stuff), not vegetable protein (the stuff that's not so good  for dogs). The local store only carries the Bison/Venison and Wild Salmon; I haven't noticed the Duck. But it's a GREAT food. Pricey, but this is definitely a case where you get what you pay for. And my pups don't eat great quantities of it, because their little bodies utilize it better, so they eat less and poop less. In the long run, it's actually less expensive than cheaper dog foods. Charmed239, I'm pleased to hear that it's done so well for your pups. It's always a good thing when something "works", isn't it? |

The Wetlands and High Praire formulas both contain 32% protein and 18% fat. I have never fed either of those due to a chicken allergy with my oldest. But, I fed a lot of the Pacific Stream (salmon) formula and my guys LOVED it. It only has 25% protein and 15% fat. |

My girl loves anything with salmon. I think we will give it a try. Can you buy TOTW at like Petsmart or do I need to get from specialty store? |

Call a check around at some local "mom and pop" dog stores. They usualy have some very good holistic dog food brands ;) |
Does the TOTW salmon formula make them stinky? morgan's breath is bad enough as it now, i wouldn't want to make it worse. LOL |

I've done a lot of reading on foods, and I've tried several in order to find the right ones for us. Acana and TOTW are the two foods that my gang have done the best on....and they all love both. |
I've fed Prairie formula (bison) to all of my dogs for quite a while now- it's definitely an excellent food. If you go to the Yorkie Health & Diet section of the forum and click on the sticky "Super Premium Pet Foods List... ask for free samples" (last page) you'll see my post that explains how to get samples of all 3 varieties (Prairie, Wetlands & Pacific Salmon). I received mine way back when, but they sent me four 6oz packages of each diet :D |
I swear I have noticed that their teeth are getting cleaner as well..and to answer a question of one of the OP. No I am not noticing any bad breath, Im fact Daizy"s breath has improved. And also I bought the food at a store here called Pet Supplies Plus! |

Dog food manufacturers add grain protein because it's cheap (notice I didn't say "inexpensive", which would give it an air of acceptance  - CHEAP). It's an easy way to increase the overall protein level of a manufactured food without costing as much (to *them*) as doing it right. Many dogs are allergic to grains, to corn and wheat especially, not so much rice and barley, but those aren't good either - and usually end up being things like hulls and remnants of stuff that would usually be tossed out (like the barley that remains after beer has been made - someone else's garbage). It adds bulk without adding much in the way of nutrition. So, I've made the decision to go grain free. That definitely includes corn and wheat. The premium dog foods are all grain free ... much better for the wee beasties. The food may cost more initially, but they eat less (because they don't have to eat as much to get their nutritional needs), they poop less (because their bodies use the food they're getting, unlike corn which they can't digest and just passes through), they're healthier, they don't have as many dental problems (corn and other carbs convert to sugar and affects their teeth, not to mention being a contributing factor to diabetes), and many other reasons. All in all, I've just decided that grain free is the way to go. They're little beasties and don't eat much, so I can afford to feed them the best. It's worth the money now to avoid the health problems later. Just my opinion ... ;) |
We use TOTW as well and my two love it. |
