How often to you bathe you pup? We just gave Hammer a bath last weekend.. and he constantly scratching because of dry skin, so im going to give him another bath today. He still smells AMAZING so seems silly to bath him. Is once a week too often? |
He might be scratching because of the shampoo .. maybe the shampoo gave him dry skin? Don't bathe him often.. dogs should not be bathe too often! I am yet to find out how often to bathe Samy but all dog owners I know say once a couple of months... My vet said once a month and only with special shampoo for him so he does not get itchy and scratchy :) |
Are you sure the reason that he is scratching is from dry skin? It might be allergies. Pebbles scratched all the time until I changed her food and started adding Coconut Oil to her diet. She now has totally stopped scratching. I believe it was a chicken and grain allergy. What are you feeding? I have all of mine a bath once a week and believe that it is pretty standard of most members on YT to bath anywhere from weekly to every other week. If I wait too much longer their hair looks just horrible.:) |
every Friday night so she can be gorgeous for our weekend out and about fun time :) I use Dr. Bronners Baby Mild Liquid soap...it's GREAT for dry and sensitive skin. |
Once a week - faithfully! Yorkie's hair isn't like most dogs. I know my previous vet said the same thing but unfortunately not all vets are familiar with breed specific care. |
We are feeding him Royal Canin Indoor Puppy .. We were used a puppy shampoo/cond then my boyfriend (ugh men) searched online and found that dandruff shampoo was safe so without my knowledge used that on him! |
I wouldnt use people shampoo on him, while most shampoos are "safe" they are much to harsh for their skin and could be causing the itching. I would bathe your baby with a very mild shampoo and see if that helps, if it does not you can start to look at other reasons for the itching. I use either Eqyss brand or Kiehls brand shampoo and conditioner on mine and bathe them every other week |

That is probably the reason because it's like a detergent and too strong. Yorkies are not like regular dogs when it comes to skin and hair. The product I use is not a detergent based soap. It is a castile and olive oil based cleaning liquid and other natural ingredients that are great for sensitive skin and conditions the hair. |

My babies still like RC, but the scratching is a sign that something is not agreeing with them. |
In the summer, it's typically 1x a week bath for Jackson. In the winter, I can go as long as every other week or more. |

I love it! :) It leaves Cerise's hair feeling moisturized and it doesn't sting her eyes. what's is ACV? |
We also bathe our girls every week. :) |

I would not use human shampoo and get a good puppy shampoo to use. I've been using Pet Silk and I really like it but as you can see everyone has a preference. I also just bought Tropiclean from a member here and it smell wonderful and is on sale of only $6 including shipping! She even has a soap free Oatmeal that might be something to try. Bi-weekly or weekly (depending on the coat and skin type) is fine to bathe, at least this is what i do although vet says differently. |

Silky :) I would think it would work on a cottony coat too. I haven't tried ACV but I may since we have a lot of mosquitos and fleas here in Texas. Cerise is on Sentinel once a month. |
Wow.. I only bathe Magnus about once a month or so. I do wipe him down with those pet wipes in between and brush him regularly. As far as I know, his coat looks silky & shiny. The vet or anyone never said otherwise. |

Also I use a conditoner (about the size of a dime or less in the palm of my hand) on her. I spread it ONLY on the ends of her hair, leave it on for about 60 seconds and rinse it off. It's a natural and organic product by Aubrey Organics - Island Naturals Replenishing Conditioner, that I buy from Whole Foods. It is for dry, frizzy hair and detangles. I do understand that it's a human  product but it works fabulous and her hair is shiney, growing and flowing beautifully. After reading the ingredients I felt very comfortable with using it. I prefer products that are not harsh or full of chemicals. Most pet brands are that way and cause more harm than good IMO for sensitive skin and hair. |

But I think she has a cottony coat, lots of hair, but fine, her head thou is very silky to the point that wont hold the top knot |
i bathe my pup once every 7-10 days b/c her fur does start looking nappy. it really does make a difference b/c their hair is more similar to human hair than normal dog hair. i use cheapy puppy shampoo right now, i think when her adult coat comes in, i will switch but she doesn't seem to have any adverse effects to the puppy shampoo so i just keep using it. its good to get them use to grooming young though so that they will learn to tolerate it when they are older. this thread has a lot of shampoo suggestions: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...o-yorkies.html |

LOL :) Cerise hair on top is so silky the bows slide out sometimes when she does the Yorkie shake. |
I wash both of my dogs weekly with Italian Pet Spa Italian Buttermilk and Sugar shampoo. It smells AMAZING. I can't stop smelling them on bath day, and several people have come over on different occasions and can't stop smelling them either. It's a moisturizing shampoo. If I notice that they have dry skin I hold off on the weekly bath and wipe them down with an unscented baby wipe and then spritz the moisturizing spray (made by the same company). They don't have any dry skin on this shampoo anymore. I think its important to get a good quality shampoo, it may seem expensive, but for how little you use it's not that much money very often. I have two dogs that I bath weekly and I have had the same bottle for six months and I am not even half way through it yet. You might want to get a moisturizing spritz or conditioner to use along with the shampoo, especially in the winter months when the skin can get really dry. Brushing them often helps fend off dry skin as well because it distributes the oils in there coat. |

I'm always looking for good smelling shampoos! Does the smell last for a few days? I love when he smells good for a while. I googled and it seems Petco used to sell it (it got amazing reviews) but the item is no longer listed or sold. :( I found this smell,http://www.petco.com/product/105511/...a-Shampoo.aspx but the buttermilk/sugar ones seems like it'd smell better! |
Yes they smell like it for several days, but its always the strongest and softest on the first day. I purchased it from Petco, but it's been a while since I bought it. I hope they didn't discontinue it that would make me very sad. I found this website with other products made by the same company Royal Treatment All Natural Formulas But i didn't see the Buttermilk and Sugar one. Bummer :( Although they had some other ones that sounded really good too. |
I was told by my vet that Celine needed a non soap shampoo. She said even baby shampoo was too harsh. She recommended ( and this might just be the vendor they use) Virbac Allergroom. On the bottle it says Routine shampoo for normal or dry skin dogs, cats and horses (? ha! horses) It is all I have ever used and really it is wonderful!! Smells great on her! I bath her once a week. |

My puppy "Zora" gets a bath about once a week. This week she has been bathed twice (three times if you count the pepsi she got into!:)). |

I contacted the company and she told me the Italian Buttermilk and Sugar is temporarily discontinued but that they will have it back by the end of the year. Right around the time I\'ll need a new bottle. Yay |
