In the summer once a week however we can 2 weeks in the winter as they don't go out much. I've been having good luck with Harry Barker oatmeal shampoo and Khiels. Khiels can be purchased at any department store. Harry Barker I order online. As OP said look into allergies as well, Good Luck~

It's a moisturizing shampoo. If I notice that they have dry skin I hold off on the weekly bath and wipe them down with an unscented baby wipe and then spritz the moisturizing spray (made by the same company). I have two dogs that I bath weekly and I have had the same bottle for six months and I am not even half way through it yet. You might want to get a moisturizing spritz or conditioner to use along with the shampoo, especially in the winter months when the skin can get really dry.

Brushing them often helps fend off dry skin as well because it distributes the oils in there coat.
Omg! I found the Buttermilk and Sugar spray at Petco! No shampoo in that scent but the spray smells amazing so I bought it! It was on sale for like $7! I just wish I could find the shampoo cuz it smells amazing.

Hey, so i bathe my little man twice a week to just a week (it depends on how stinky he gets) anyways he doesnt itch at all (except for when i put bows in his hair and he wants to take them off) I think it could be your shampoo, or conditioner. You should make sure that neither the shampoo or conditioner have alcohol in it because alcohol can dry out there skin and make it itchy. Also with my yorkie i spray him with some really goo mosturizing spray for dogs every day when i brush him. Oh and i use a soap free, hypoallergenic shampoo that has oatmeal in it.

I'm so confused. I read about so many people bathing their dogs once a week (which sounds fine with me and ideal), but then I've heard and also read in magazines from Vets that you should only bathe your dog monthly or their skin will dry out and be itchy. But then in these same magazines in other articles they say if you plan on having a show dog be prepared to bathe them weekly! So is it really bad bathing your dog weekly or more than once a month like Vet's say not to do?

Anyways, I finally gave my girl her 1st bath today - she's 4 months old and I was told to wait this long before bathing her because puppies hair and skin are really sensitive. I can't tell you much I was dying to give her a bath!! She did excellent too.

Wondering if people prefer to bathe their dogs in a sink vs. a bathtub or vice versa though. I used the bathtub today because my girl is a squirmy little thing and thought it would be safer. I would prefer though using the sink, so I don't have to sit on the ground or tub ledge. Thoughts on sink vs. bath-tub?

I just usually chalk it up to vets dont know everything... if you use a good shampoo they will not dry out.

I prefer the tub as well... I feel like it is safer too and I dont feel like I have enough room to maneuver mine in the sink... I put on shorts and stand right in the tub as I bathe them so I feel like it gives me more control over them and I know they wont jump out. :)

For most other breeds, this is true. We bathed our Golden (rip) probably once every 6 months and she was always fine. She only became stinky towards the end of her life. But Yorkies, and most other hypoallergenic breeds, have more human like hair that can be bathed more often. Using a good shampoo that doesn't dry out skin won't hurt either.

Thanks. That makes sense. If you don't mind me asking what shampoo/conditioner do you use or what do YT talkers recommend? I'd love to find one that makes my girl super soft and smells yummy but that is good for her skin also. I heard really good things about Yorkie Splash and Shine and IV San Bernard? I used Nootie this 1st time - the Cucumber Melon scented shampoo, but it was just OK I thought. She smelt cleaned, but not yummy and I'm sad that they don't make a conditioner. Thanks.

Thanks. Yeah not everyone knows everything. I'll take the people who actually own a yorkie/s advice I think. Since they see the results firsthand. ;) What shampoo/conditioner do you use if you don't mind me asking? The tub worked well, but I saw on youtube videos of people washing their dogs in the sink and that looked easy as well. I might try that method next time, but will buy a bath harness to keep my girl in place and from slipping all around or jumping out. I've also seen really cute effective little doggie bathtubs for the little ones that one can use outdoors in the nice weather! I'm sure I'll find the method that works best for us soon. Thanks for your advice.

I bathe Jackson in our sink. We have a sprayer that comes out that makes it easy to rinse/wash. I got a sample of the Nootie as well (Cucumber Melon) and it made him soft and shiny... I will probably continue to use it maybe every other bath or something (I get sick of smells fast:rolleyes:) but I wish the scent would last longer. I was expecting it to be better honestly. Minksheen is one I really like, it seems like the smell of it is a hit or miss w/ some ppl though... it's very cologne-ish and semi strong so if you're sensitive it's not good but I love it! It lasts on Jackson for around 3 days (days 1 and 2 being the strongest).

I just recently discovered the Italian Pet Spa from this thread (Royal Treatment All Natural Formulas) and they sell 2 scents at Petco that seemed really nice. I bought the spray (not the shampoo) of the Buttermilk and Sugar one and OMG it smells sooo good. Jackson smells like a giant cookie! I can't wait for the shampoo to be sold again! I will be buying it. But now I'm gonna just keep using Minksheen.

I really like Buddy Wash. They sell it at Whole Foods at pet boutiques. The conditioner is fabulous.

I personally believe you should go as long as possible without bathing your dog, because they hate the experience and I don't believe they enjoy the smell either. They like to smell like dogs, which of course, we don't want at all. I do struggle with it because I let Thor sleep in my bed, and then of course he gets dirty outside almost every day... I do a quick paw rinse every other day, and probably bathe him every 2-3 weeks.

Wow a lot of good suggestions on shampoos. :) I'll have to experiment with them all. The Italian Pet Spa products sound nice. My nose can pretty much handle any strong but of course nice scents. :) I'll have to try for sure the Buttermilk and Sugar spray if it made your yorkie Jackson smell like a giant cookie. Mmmmmm. Now I'm craving some nice cookies! Thanks! :) I was also hoping the Nootie Cucumber and Melon shampoo scent would be a bit stronger and last longer. I do remember reading though that it is one of their milder scents. I also read great things about the Buddy Wash conditioner too. :) Thanks for recommendations.

I shampoo & condition Farrah who is almost 6 mos old every other day or 3rd day if she isn't too dirty. She is a dirty girl! LOL I have been doing it for 3+ months and no itchy skin nothing, just clean smelling goodness.
I use an organic shampoo/cond. for puppies.
After reading this thread it seems to me I will need to change this routine when her adult coat comes in. Thank you all for your informative posts.
