I read online that the tube which is used to administer anesthesia for teeth cleaning and cause the trachea to collapse!!!!!!!:eek::mad: Has anyone else heard that?
Prince had his teeth cleaned about two years ago, and did not have CT. Now he does. His grandparents, parents, nor brother has it. I've met all of them, and the breeder is a neighbor of my mom's.
I hate that he has this.:(

That really scares me because Bailey has some left over baby teeth that I need to have the vet remove, but I'm afraid to do it!.

I can imagine! Prince's new vet won't clean his teeth because of his CT. Wow, I'm between a rock and a hard place!!!:mad: Thank God that his teeth are in really good condition.

Yes! I would hate for this to happen to anyone else's baby. I don't know if that was the cause, but he did not have ANY problems before. Nothing!!!!

well it is a very strong possibility :( my friends maltese had a growth removed under anesthesia and after had ct . I use a board certified dentist and made sure they use cat tube or smaller with mine due to reading about this sadly :( but prior to knowing this when mine were spay and neutered had no idea about all this so never asked :( Now i make sure all safety precautions are used prior to them going under and go to specialists and pay more to be extra careful :(

I always thought that my yorkie who passed away in November had something go wrong with his trachea after he had surgery for his neuter/teeth removal. I had no proof, but his breathing and his honking were never the same after that surgery.

I would have never imagined that this could be so dangerous. Does anybody know how common this is? Any statistics? Does this have to do with the size of the tube used or the size of our yorkies?

Yes, unfortunately he is. And yes, it is eating me up...my husband as well.:(
Prince has some really rough days, and some really great days, and takes meds daily. We just have to monitor his activities, and his environment to keep him from having severe wheezing attacks. It's so sad to see him struggling to breathe. I try to let him do some fun "doggy" things, but in moderation. Yesterday was a good day and I'm praying today will be, as well.
So far he is doing fine.:)

What are the symptoms of a collapsed trachea?? Betty Boop sounds like she is honking and can't catch her breath at times....probably once a day she does this. She sticks her head in my husband's work boot and she coughs. Okay.....not from the smell! LOL

From reading this post, it makes me wonder if she has a collapsed trachea. She has only had one surgery (spay and teeth pulling at the same time).

My Wee Ted had major nose surgery two months ago to remove a mast tumor at the back of his nose that they think was caused by inflammation. It's been two months and I thought by now he'd be healed; yet he's still on steroids because when he's not his snorting and reverrse sneezing are so bad. I thought it was part of the recovery process; yet reading this I now wonder if his trachea has been damaged as he was put under anethesia twice prior to the surgery for x rays and ct and then again for the actual surgery. It saddens me to think in order to solve one problem we've created another. I too feel helpless when he stands there struggling for air. Keeping his excitement level down is hard. He can't even enjoy a daily homecoming cause he starts struggling from the excitement. Prayers to all fuzzy butts suffering from this xo

so many of your babies are suffering from CT. It's scary and heartbreaking
to watch a dog gasping for breath. Buddy does this once in awhile.
When he get's overly excited. I read that blowing air into the dog's nose
when he get's like this does help. I've been doing that when Buddy get's
an attack, not sure but I think it does help him.
He didn't have this as a baby it seemed to appear around 3ys. He's never
had surgery except for being neutered at 6mos.

Prince doesn't cough, although a of yorkies with CT do.

I've heard that too, about blowing in their nose, but I guess it depends of the severity of the CT...that does not work if your baby has a severe case. Prince has never had any surgery except neutering when he was a baby. He's six now. I really think this has to do with his teeth cleaning...the anesthesia application tube.:(:(:(

Has Ted been on steroids every day...for two months, or off and on for two months?

Buddy has never had a dental and I hope never needs one.
I clean his teeth almost daily and use petzlife and have for years.
He has no tartar build up at all. After reading your story I will
certainly be sure never to stop the brushing.

The cause of CT isn't always clear. :(

It looks like the endotracheal tube most definitely could have made an existing but asymptomatic case much worse though.

So yes, it's possible that if he wouldn't have had surgery, he wouldn't have symptoms. Or something else could have triggered it by now... Did he ever have kennel cough?

No, no kennel cough...he was very healthy. (By surgery, are you referring to his teeth cleaning?)

B/c if not, there is no way to know if he had it or not...

she passed away :( the ct affected her heart and she was taking her to a cardiologist and everything but she was alot older and she was constantly having attacks 24/7 so they had to put her down. Again she was older and she had a bad heart but when i spoke to her i asked when did this all start and she thought real hard and said after that growth was removed and i asked was she under anesthesia and she said yes and my heart dropped to my stomach as i knew this was the cause :( so she felt horrible as the growth was not that big of a deal - she suffered with allergies as well so she had alot going on :(

Prince's mom, yes, poor Ted's been on steroids for two months. We tapered down and when I reported his snorting and snorting, they put it back up to 5 miligrams cause we couldn't risk inflammation causing another mast tumor. Then he is doing it even on the steroids; so we're tapering
down again...cause, really, what's the point if he's snorting anyway? So now I worry about harm to his liver; yet I had to follow doctor's orders or I'd have felt terrible if his nose inflammed again. I guess we just wait and see now. Just try keep him calm. Was wondering if anyone used some sort of herbal remedy to keep our little guys calm? I don't want to put him on some relaxant that will make him just lie there to be calm, and from the sounds of it, that's their next plan of action....more drugs. Anyway, hope Prince has a nice calm day. I took Ted to the park for a stoll. People must think I have a pot belly pig cause he's swollen from steroids and snorting like a littl piggy. Seems he can't sniff without snorting anymore. Compared to how he sounded with the tumor in his nose, at least I know he's more comfortable than he was prior to surgery. Just those episodes scare the heck out of us, don't the????

call them and ask them what size tube they used and if they have the cat tube as there is a ferret one i believe too - there are many different sizes of tubes

if it is reverse sneeze the best way to stop it is covering nostrils and opening the mouth and it will stop immediately as you are telling them to breath through mouth not nose

size of the tube as you need to ask this whenever going under anesthesia as some vets do not carry all the small tubes and why it is important to make sure your vet or specialists deals with small breed dogs as if they work mostly with large breed they may not have all the sizes :( I know there are cat tubes but there are even smaller tubes used for ferrets
