That reversed coughing thing Here in the last few weeks, Buzz seems to be doing that reversed coughing thing, quite a bit, and I'm wondering if some of you have experienced this w/your pups, in the Spring? He's a very healthy, and sturdy pup, weighing 5 lbs. 11 oz. a couple of weeks ago...He's 8 months old...Because he was under the weather, at about 4 months old, he had all sorts of blood work done, x-rays taken, etc., and my vet said all his numbers (and framework lol) looked very good...I always thought that collapsed trachea thing was for the more delicate dogs, so I'm thinking it might be seasonal allergies, since he's not really delicate...Have any of you found this to be true (allergies?) |
No, not really. Buddy never did that honking thing as a puppy but as he's matured it happens when he get's excited, especially when I wake up in the am. I practically jump out of bed before he get's raved up and it starts. He get's so excited to see my eyes open. It really is scary. He's 16lbs and 6yrs old. So it's just not the little ones. I think is just a breed thing. |
When we first adopted Jada (May 30th last year) she did the reverse sneeze thing quiet a bit. After about 3 months it just suddenly stopped. She has started doing it again,about once a day. I hadn't thought of seasonal allergies, but it makes sense as her eyes are watering more too. Pollen season is just getting started too. |
does it sound like the nose is stuffy? how is the air where you are at dry? |

Barney reverse sneezes and when the house is dry like in the winter it acts up. If he goes into a goose honking fit, I usually boil a pot of hot water on the stove for 10 minutes and that usually helps. I also try to distract him so he kind of does not panic. It's amazing what the cookie command gets me in my house :D |

My osiris does this about three times a day he just turned 1 year old saturday. It did not start till he was about 6 months old. It scares me at times but i just think it got worse since its around spring time. What i do is when i hear him making the noise i take two fingers and plug his nose nostrils then open his mouth so he can breath out...it helps. I also rub his throat and it seems to stop. Also i been thinking about switching him to completely grain free food for the spring only. Right now he is just on Wellness for small breeds but im thinking about putting him on wellness Core for the spring season....but im doing a little more research on the Core since it has not been out too long. Maybe the tips will help:] |

Just a side note: CT can happen to any size yorkie. It is not just the tiny ones. |

http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...d-trachea.html here are three videos comparing three things I have an allergy dog and they can do this from allergies but mine does not do it that much and she has horrible allergies. did you notice it just recently or has this been happening for a long time? Can you post a video of it from your camera as that may help sometimes if a dog is put under and they do not use a tiny tube like a cat tube or smaller it can cause ct and since you stated your baby had some tests run that would be my concern if it happened after that and was not a seasonal thing and sounds like a goose honking noise |
if it is reverse sneeze the fastest way to stop it is to cover the nostrils and open the mouth and it will stop immediately as you are redirecting them to breath through the mouth to stop the reverse sneeze |
No disrespect to anyone but I feel those examples I posted were actually better examples of CT and Reverse sneeze. I have lived with both. Anesthesia in and of itself does not cause CT. That has been going around YT lately and people need to realize that: 1. vets know what size tube to intubate a yorkie with and 2. intubation does irritate the trachea, so if a pup had a weakened one to begin with it can become apparent following anesthesia It worries me that people are voicing fear of dentals and other necessary procedures because they think it is going to cause CT. |
