Cough Syrup Toxic???

I need to use something to help with my 5 month old pups that got Kennel Cough from a puppy that we got flown in -- got in on the plane. The vet told me that baby/child cough syrup is toxic to Yorkies. Is this true -- has anyone used cough syrup for their Yorkie?

I can't answer your question directly because I don't have any experience with kennel cough, but someone posted this recently about over the counter medications -- the website warns that if a med is not on the list, don't give it -- looks like nothing listed for cough: OTC Medications

Did your vet suggest any alternatives for kennel cough?

No she didn't. All she said was that I could give baby Benedryl but that wouldn't help kennel cough, just a cough due to allergies. I did just check out Revival, and they have some drops that do say very good for kennel cough. Guess I'll get that if nobody has any experience using the child cough syrup.

I can't say if this website is accurate, I would always ask my vet, but it does say:

There are several home approaches for puppy canine kennel cough treatment that can be tried for a puppy (or adult for that matter).
1) One home treatment for a puppy with kennel cough is to try Pediatric Robitussin 4x per day. This approach has been used for dogs as young as two. If your puppy does not respond, antibiotics are called for. Check the label to make sure the medicine does not contain ibuprofen or acetaminophen since these can cause liver damage. Ask your veterinarian for the correct dose (no more than 1/2 teaspoon to avoid overdose).

Note it's saying for dogs as young as two, why would they call that a puppy?

When Daisy use to have one of her episodes when she was a puppy and she would cough the vet told me pediatric robitussin...it did help her.

How old was she at the time, and so you remember how much the vet
told you to give to her? Sure would be nice to get something OTC instead
of having to order it and pay shipping!

I have one that has allergies and I use Pediatric Robitussin on her when it flares up.

Daisy was a puppy mill dog and sick all the time the first two yrs of her life. She was a very sick dog almost died 3 times.
she did have kennel cough as well, but we took her to the vet and he gave her medication.
She broke my heart and we did everything and anything to help her. Thank God she just celebrated her 6 birthday.I am not really sure she was when we gave her the robitussin but you can call a vet and ask them if it is ok. I am really not sure what the dosage would be.
I would think if the dog has kennel cough it should be vet checked any way. I don't know if there is a holistic way to get rid of kennel cough.

The vet told me OTC cough syrups are toxic to dogs, that's why I started this thread hoping to find out what other vets said, or what some of you have tried that has worked. The antibiotics, prevent the Kennel Cough from going into pneumonia, but doesn't help the cough itself. I thank everyone for all the responses. It's great to get feedback from so many great people.

Your vet may know something we don't know! I did see this on one site:

Kennel cough
High, dry coughs are typical of kennel cough or acute tracheobronchitis. A dog with kennel cough seems to feel fine otherwise. Cases usually heal in about two weeks, but the frequent bouts of coughing can be annoying to the owner who lies awake listening to his pet hack away. Treatment includes isolation to avoid infection of other family or kennel dogs, monitoring of temperature, rest, and if the coughing is severe, use of a children's over-the-counter cough syrup. A humidifier can help the dog breathe easier and thus reduce coughing and further throat inflammation.

Kennel cough in puppies and toy breeds can be another story; the throat irritation can be accompanied by thick secretions that can cause pneumonia.

So this sounds like kennel cough is harder on the toy breeds like yorkies.

Remember coughing is nature's way of getting the mucus out of lungs, the right type of cough syrup with an expectorant helps the cough be more productive, you don't want to just stop the cough, you want to make it productive. Also, other things can cause coughing such as distemper, so you want to make sure it's diagnosed properly.
