Hope the vet visit went well. :) |
Hello Everyone, So it turns out Gibson was neither constipated or dehydrated. The vet thinks he may have a injury to his back or a pulled or strained muscle. He said that he probably wasn't drinking fluids because he wasn't feeling well. They gave him two injections, an antibiotic and one for pain. He's going to be on Metacam an anti-inflammatory and pain medication for 10 days, then needs to go back in for a check up at that time. I also have to keep him confined for 14 days so he doesn't aggravate his injury further. I'm hoping it turns out to be a pulled muscle and nothing more. After he got back home, he was being his normal self again, probably because of his injections. Thank you all for you help and warm wishes, it really helped ease my nerves. :) P.S Ellie May, I was on edge today being that Gibson was sick and took your response wrong. I understand what you meant, and apologize for jumping to conclusions. :) |

Glad Gibson, is doing well, and I hope it's just a pulled muscle too. You'll find Ellie May is one of the most helpful people here on Yorkietalk. My son's dog had such a similar thing, and at first they thought it was back problems. The pain was really on and off, but they finally diagnosed it as pancreatitis, after about 6 months of tests. I think it may be helpful to keep a food chart, and write down any symptoms your dog experiences each day, and how much food and water he's drinking, It's so much easier to give your vet a clear picture of what the dog is experiencing, if you have kept notes. Best of luck! |

I really commend you for apologizing to Ellie May (Crystal) bc, seriously, she offers some of *the* best and most respected advice here (not to mention the others who also posted on this thread :)). Just to clarify, the reason she posted (as did others) "get to the vet asap" - is bc when dogs yelp in pain and they've stopped drinking water for an extended time, this is truly an "asap" situation. And in yorkies, as Nancy said, weird pain can even mean pancreatitis. My point is, in this case - the answers you got were spot on :). I know you were really stressed out though, and we all can react this way when our own fur kiddos are hurting and we feel helpless and frustrated, and want answers. I just wanted to offer a little clarification though :). Please keep us posted on his progress and know we're all pulling for him. You'll get him through this. :) |

Thank you for updating. We were all concerned. Yes, having a sick pup is a very stressful thing....we have all been there! I know Ellie May will feel better...she really does her best to help everyone. That is so nice of you to apologize to her. :) Sounds like your vet is a good one! Even though Gibson might seem ok now, be sure to keep him quiet like the vet suggested. The meds can make him feel better than he really is. Sounds like he is going to be just fine. Please keep us updated! :) |
I am so glad you took Gibson to the vet! I bet you are, too. :) It's so hard to know what's wrong with them since they can't talk to us and tell us what hurts. I hope he has a speedy recovery. Please keep us updated. |
Just checking in on Gibson. Good luck trying to keep him quiet for the next two weeks as yorkies are a bundle of energy. Anymore yelping? Hopefully it will turn out to be a pulled muscle, keeping fingers crossed. Take care |

Hello Everyone, Gibson is doing better today, so far no yelping when I pick him up. I'm his personal elevator for the next two weeks and I think he's starting to understand that. He looks back at me when he wants to get up on the bed, and then I go and pick him up. He likes to relax in his crate all day when I work, so thankfully I don't have to worry about him jumping around too much. But once I hear him walk out, I watch him like a hawk. lol. I still see him hesitating to shake his fur back in place..not sure if that makes sense..but that could be because he is sore. But thankfully, he definitely looks better than he did yesterday. |
Glad to hear he seems to be improving! :) |
Couldn't tell from your reply, but is Gibson using steps? With a big dog, jumping from the bed is nothing; they hit their front paws almost immediately. With Yorkies, however, jumping from that high can be dangerous. I taught Joey to use steps to go up to and down from the bed, and also the couch, if he forgets, I place him back on the bed where he has to use the steps. I think steps can prevent many injuries, and as they get older, the steps may be a necessity, so it's great if they already know how to use them. |

I am so glad Gibson is feeling better. Poor little guy . The only thing I wonder is if the vet ought to have done any exrays ? Esp . on his back and spinal cord. If it were any of my girls I would like my vet to be certain what is wrong before treating them . That is just my opinion though. I will pray that Gibson will be fine , and have no other pain or problems. :aimeeyork |
My Tito does the same thing. Hes not yelping but he makes a weird noise when I pick him up. The difference between Gibson and Tito is that Tito still has energy and spunk like always. I am lost on what to do. |
