Anal Glands and Food...
 
I recently switched my yorkies to California Natural Lamb Meal and Rice because of their MVD they need to be on low protein.

However, the groomer called today and said their anal glands were majorly impacted... this has to be due to the switch in food because they have never had an issue before.

I would like to stick with this food if possible because it was soo hard finding a low protein food they would eat anyway.

Is there something I can add to their food to help with the anal gland problem or do I need to switch foods?

My dog just had surgery today because of this issue.

My vet said that for the anal glands to be expressed themselves the poop needs to be hard.....

Have they been having soft stools on the new food?

The poop needs to hard and large enough to express the glands naturally.

yes, this is the problem, their poops are very small on this new food.

I was wondering if there was something I could add to their food to "bulk it up" without bulking them up, :p

I added a few frozen (thawed) green beans to Joey's diet, and it seemed to taken care of the problem. The frozen are better than the canned because they don't add salt. I add about a small handful of the chopped. He loves them.

Yeah I do, the vet recommended them originally because Joey gained too much weight after a trick training class, he told me to reduce his food, and add the green beans. He only gets them with his nightly meal, but his anal gland problem cleared up, and I read that increased bulk/fiber can help.

I feed Maximo baby sweet peas every day for the same reason -- and I too use frozen/salt free, warmed up in the microwave, then cooled with water; 1 teaspoon with lunch and dinner.

Green beans are much better -- far fewer carbs/natural sugars. I need to switch.

We switched to green beans today and the boys loved them!

I had tried before with fresh green beans (my preference), but Maximo didn't care for them. He loves the frozen ones. :rolleyes:

Yeah the frozen ones are blanched before freezing, and this cooks them enough so that dogs can digest them. Fresh ones you have to cook a long time.

That explains the boys' preference.

Sadly, I had to go back to sweet peas. The green beans (only 2 per day, barely an inch long) gave Teddy diarrhea. Maximo's stools were getting progressively softer too.

Oh too bad. Hope they are feeling better now. Sometimes I give Joey the frozen snow peas, they are in the pod, and the pod is what adds the fiber. I wonder if they would work? I just noticed you don't have the anal gland problem, so I guess it doesn't make any difference.

Nancy... I wanted to thank you for the advice... I have been giving the green beans at dinner and their poops are certainly larger!

The groomer is going to check again in a month to see if their anal glands are getting impacted again but I really think this is going to have helped.

Do you think it is ok to give them the green beans when they are "frozen" still?

I have been doing that but, Moose threw up in the middle of the night and there was still undigested green beans:eek: I wonder if they are sitting like a rock in his tummy? :(
