Anal Glands and Food... I recently switched my yorkies to California Natural Lamb Meal and Rice because of their MVD they need to be on low protein. However, the groomer called today and said their anal glands were majorly impacted... this has to be due to the switch in food because they have never had an issue before. I would like to stick with this food if possible because it was soo hard finding a low protein food they would eat anyway. Is there something I can add to their food to help with the anal gland problem or do I need to switch foods? Thanks |
My dog just had surgery today because of this issue. My vet said that for the anal glands to be expressed themselves the poop needs to be hard..... Have they been having soft stools on the new food? |

I was wondering if there was something I could add to their food to "bulk it up" without bulking them up, :p |
I added a few frozen (thawed) green beans to Joey's diet, and it seemed to taken care of the problem. The frozen are better than the canned because they don't add salt. I add about a small handful of the chopped. He loves them. |

Green beans are much better -- far fewer carbs/natural sugars. I need to switch. |
We switched to green beans today and the boys loved them! I had tried before with fresh green beans (my preference), but Maximo didn't care for them. He loves the frozen ones. |

Sadly, I had to go back to sweet peas. The green beans (only 2 per day, barely an inch long) gave Teddy diarrhea. Maximo's stools were getting progressively softer too. |

Nancy... I wanted to thank you for the advice... I have been giving the green beans at dinner and their poops are certainly larger! The groomer is going to check again in a month to see if their anal glands are getting impacted again but I really think this is going to have helped. Thanks Again  |
Do you think it is ok to give them the green beans when they are "frozen" still? I have been doing that but, Moose threw up in the middle of the night and there was still undigested green beans:eek: I wonder if they are sitting like a rock in his tummy? :( |

I am pretty much a poo checker too! :p but since giving them the green beans I have to admit that I haven't been checking due to we have had so much rain, they just run out and potty then back come right back in and I have been a bad momma and haven't been going out with them. I just watch from inside! :) On sunny days I have NOT noticed any green beans in their poo. Maybe it was a fluke that one night. |

I tried the sugarsnap peas with Maximo when he about 5 months old and the result was soft stools. We'll have to stick to the baby sweet peas as long as stools, glands, and weight remain good. Maintaining proper weight was my primary motivation for wanting to switch. ArmaniMan -- glad the beans are working well. Hoping for a good gland report for you next trip to the groomer. :) |
This is an interesting thread. My 10 year old Staffy has ALWAYS had anal gland problems, it's so annoying, especially if they get so full that they start leaking! :sickie: They've never been impacted, but just get over full. My vte's always having to empty them! I've tried adding bran to her diet, on advise from the vet, but noticed no difference! She is fed on Orijen senior. Her poos have always been hard, but seem small as others have said. I'm going to give the thawed out frozen green beans a go, it would be brilliant if they did the trick! |
I changed to Innova dog food and no more anal gland problems! One of my dogs is 15 and anal glands had to be done very two weeks and now nothing, it is great. Also a low protein food. |
