Do Yorkies smell like dog? I'm fond of Yorkies but have never owned one. I'd love to have a Yorkie but I do not want my house to smell like a dog. I currently am owned by three cats and no one ever knows that I have cats until they see them. If I become owned by a little treasure Yorkie, will someone know by the smell of dog when they walk into my house? I realize that Poodles do not smell like dog but I'd rather have a Yorkie. |
I bathe my boys once per week or so, and our house doesn't smell like dogs. Their hair is more like human hair, so it needs to be brushed if it's not super short, so I think that sorta helps with their need to be bathed more often than a lot of dogs that give off that "dog" smell...I personally love the smell of my babies, but I might just be weird like that  |
No way, these dogs dont stink at all. Mine get a bath every 7 days (10 if I'm lazy) and they always smell good. |
My mom gets compliments that her apt doesn't smell like dog at all. Or course, I'm the one putting all the effort in keeping everything clean. I bathe Kaji once a week, clean his wee wee with pup moisturizing wipes after he goes pee and clean his paws and face with a warm towel at night. Call me a freak, but Kaji sits on the couches, sleeps with me, and hops on all the beds. I'd rather keep him as clean as possible without harming his skin (causing dryness) and having him walk around smelling like pee. My friend's dog smelled a little and only got baths once every 2-3 months. |
I bathe the Yorkies about once a month and don't think they smell. They don't have an undercoat, and I think that's where a lot of the "dog smell" comes from. |
I always ask friends who come if it smells. (I have three Yorkies) They have instructions to tell me if it does. lol. They get bathed once a month in winter more in summer. Hugs Shirl x x |
Bailey gets a bath every Monday, He always smells sweet!! :) |
huh funny i was like huh smell like a dog ? haha I guess when you have inside dogs you cant relate hehe i was confused my babies smell like sweetness yummy lol but i never smell my yorkies because I bathe them regularly |
I love the way mine smell, whether they've had a bath, or not lol...but the clean smell is better, for sure...Yorkies seem to have a kind of 'musky' smell, when they need a bath, but it's not really a doggy smell...During the really cold weather, I didn't bathe my pups, and they were getting a little strong, but the main problem, w/Apple, was she was looking greasy, all the time...Buzz has course hair, so he didn't look like a little grease ball...The weather has been beautiful, this week (60's), so they've both had baths, and look and smell wonderful... |
Even when they are wet they don't smell like "dog". I bathe them every Sunday night and clean their eyes, butts and feet every day. They have their own special scent like us, both my girls have their unique scent. I can tell who is sleeping next to me by their body scent, they are delicious!!!:p |
Nope, my house never smells like dog....Harley gets regular baths, once every 7 days and even towards the end, she always smells good to us. I love to stick my nose in her neck...she smells like a little baby! |

Regular bathing (weekly) and a little daily maintenance should keep any yorkie and your home from smelling doggy! |
I have 4 dogs, a toy poodle, yorkie mix, beagle, and sheltie and NO my house doesnt smell like dog. If you bath and groom your dogs reguarly your house wont smell. |
Mine smell really good unless they've been out in the hot sun walking and then running through the sprinklers and then rolling around on the worms that come out after the sprinklers turn off.... :D LOL! We had a Blk Lab for years and yes he used to get stinky but our Yorkies have never smelled like that - even at their dirtiest. Of course they do get bathed once a week and the shampoo & conditioner I use seem to keep them smelling so good! :p |
Everyone is different. Our Yorkie does not smell, and gets a bath every 2-3 weeks. Now our large breed Corso starts to after a month if no bath. Not real bad, but they both smell better than I do after a day outdoors! If you buy a larger house, the smell will decrease in proportion to the size of the increase! :D No they are good smelling dogs.! Bulldogs are the worst. |
Buddy has never had that doggy smell,l even when wet, when that order usually appears. He always smells sweet. He get's bathed every other week. His coat is prue silk and never get's greasey. I think Yorkies in general do not have that doggy order to them. |
I didn't read the other posts but I just want to say I have 3 dogs in the house. Two yorkies and a bull terrier. I don't find my house to stink and my friends have never said they smell dog in the house. I am sure they would smell an accident before they would smell "dog". My yorkies don't stink, they have a unique smell to them and I love it, I love smelling my yorkies! Lol :p |
Louis definetly doesn't smell like a dog. He gets a bath about once a week, and his hair smells like his shampoo. This is another good thing about a yorkie!:) |

I bathe Castor Pollux once a week (which is too frequently) but if you're still weary (which they smell lovely, even wet-- my dog smells like wet hair and not like wet dog) you can spay them, there is a conditioner spray that spells like rasberries. I don't ever spray directly on Castor Pollux, but I do spray the comb i comb him with |
Stink, in review! I have a houseful! :D The silky coats, NEVER smell bad, but get bathed and blow dried every 7-10 days. The soft (Wooly/Cotton Coat gets bathed less frequently, and has a slight odour, when wet  if he is need of a bath. The Shephard and lab, get bathed even LESS frequently , and need more baths! lol  |

This is a great question!! I think with proper grooming, yorkie's are not prone to the stinkys. Now, their feet are another story, they don't stink, they smell like corn chips esp after being outside. I do tend to notice Snickers can absorb the "outside" smell when he's out there for periods of time, but that goes away after about 1/2 hour after being back inside. I also notice diet can play a roll in how your dog smells as well. THIS IS JUST MY OPINION but I think that dogs who eat good---smell good. Our neighbors have 2 Westies who eat a controversial food and they for sure have the doggy smelling house. Some of us may not know if our house smells like dog...I remember when Snick 1st came to us and we were poty training, we would ask our family members who were honest and they said it smells like dog. Now I'm on top of it with cleaning Snickers and my house and when I ask now, I always get a good smelling home review. I am a lil OCD with cleanliness. Snick can tend to get a lil stinky if I don't stay on top of his eye gunk and wipe his eyes regularly. Also, bully sticks can make a Yorkie's mouth area smell not so pleasant. I also use warm babywipes and wipe Snick's face, peanut, feet, and bum evey morning and before bed. Smiles- Snick & Viv |
No dog odor here! |
I would never quess that Yorkies would have an odor. They have hair like another person has mentions. I give Pixie a bath ever 7 days on Sunday afternoon. No doggie smell in my house. I also have a cat and not smell from her either. :yelrotflm:sidesplt: |
