Okay, I searched hoping to find this as a sticky or previous entry, but I can't find it.

My baby girl is no longer a baby! On her 11th month birthday (2 days before I was going to have her fixed), she started bleeding. She is swollen and showing all the signs. SHUCKS! Am I correct in assuming that I'll have to wait until this is over next month to have the surgery??

She is just spotting right now. Does the bleeding increase? How long will she bleed? How will I know when all of this will be over?

I am such a procrastinator and really wish I would have had the surgery early.

Yeahhh... it sounds like you waited a bit too long doesn't it?
Well, whatever it is ... it is !
Many vets will do the spay any time.
But the best thing to do now will be wait for a couple months ... yes about 50 to 60 days .
I will not remember the exact reason as i questioned the vet about this a while back. But there is a reason for it. For the safety of the dog. Perhaps someone else will see this and post the reason...
If i can give an advice: Go ahead and schedule a new date, about 2 months from now and keep it !
Heat should last about 21 days. Bleeding can last for 5 days ... more or less depending from dog to dog.
Swollen vulva and nipples will go down in a couple weeks.

She can be spayed while in heat but it's a lot harder on them and it's also more expensive. My vet said there is more bleeding and swelling inside when they are in heat so it's best to wait until her cycle is over.

For reasons only my daughter can answer, Reesie (almost 4yrs old) hasn't been spayed yet. She's been acting strange, on and off, for a couple days now and I wanted to know if there is any pain associated with going into heat. She trembles and her appetite is down so I know she's in some pain. She pooped last night, and was active for part of the day yesterday, playing and running around but SLOWLY. She won't jump at all to get to her favorite nap spot.

I know someone gave her cheese the other day and saw the thread on cheese problems so that's on my mind also, but she's never had a cheese problem. She loves it.

Pain is usually not associated with a heat cycle. I'd be a bit concerned. Has Reesie ever been bred? There is a higher incidence of Pyrometria on bitches that haven't been bred. I'd have a vet check her out.

No she hasn't. My daughter saw $$$ a couple years ago but Reesie's patella problems ruled out breeding. Now, I just want her healthy.

Then have her checked out. Performing an emergency spay because of pyrometria is a touch and go situation.......

I just looked up the symptoms of Pyrometria and Reesie has none of those. Last night she farted for us all night and of course she sleeps on either my pillow or my wife's :/ The only thing out of normal that she was eating was a rawhide chew a couple days ago that she stole from Cindy.

There's no spotting as with heat but wanted to check. If a vet visit is in order I'll take her but I don't want to sound the alarm without reason.

While there are standard symptoms (generic) pyrometria can come on without any symptons at all.

On her gas. a few drops of Mylicn can help with that. Purchase it at any drugstore.

Is there an over the counter name for the Mylicn? ( dummy not knowing what that is)

Mylicon is the name, however, there are other brands and you can find them in the baby section. A couple of drops of milk of magnesia will also do the trick.

I know mardelin gave you an awesome lead... Pyometra is dangerous and it is associated with some of the symptoms you described .
My females have sort of "PMS" symptoms, they get tired and belly's are tender just before the vulva starts to get swollen and they go in heat. They often loose a bit of weight and loose their appetite too.
This may be what you notice with your girl.
Mylicon is a gas remedy for babies, you will find it on any drug store.

I am not very fond of raw hide either, i give it with closed suppervision... it can cause intussuception??? ( it may be spelled all wrong) due to a possible blockage of the GI track... so be careful with that . I know my friends Pug had emergency surgery because of Raw Hide and lost part of her intestines...

It may be just nothing and i hope that is what it is ... nothing ...

My yorkie loves her bully ring. I get them at Petsmart but I think you can get them cheaper on-line. I don't get the bully sticks that are long because they splintered one time, and I threw them away. I don't give her any rawhide. She does like the bull!!

Mine seems to be coming back into heat. We lost our first boy to complications, so my husband was kind of nervous about us getting her fixed (ok...I was too). I was just planning on doing it in February when I noticed two of her favorites friends (male dogs--both fixed) were smelling at her back end. I looked and she is swollen!

Do they go into heat every six months????

Yes...
It may vary a bit but usually they go in heat every 6 months, 2 times a year!
