What's a healthy treat I can buy, not make? After reading about the dangers of Greenies (can get stuck in intestines) & Nylabone (scratches back of throat & can get infected), both treats that Winston enjoyed, I had to throw them out. For training we use Pet Botanics rolled meat cut into small pieces, but I notice it gives him loose stool - probably not healthy. Any recommendations for easy, lo-cal, healthy, safe treats? |
I would like to know too...I gave Nigel some bacon strips treats and canine carry out chewy beef bites and both from canine carry out brand and noticed he was constipated this morning. I'm sure it was from the treats...anything you can buy like at walmart or petsmart that would be good? |
If I am looking for a cookie type of treat I use Newman's Own Organics Turkey & Sweet Potato , I can take one cookie and break it into tiny pieces for him. If it is a chew then I use the Virabac CET Hextra chews they are good for his teeth. Milo is not a big chewer and it is hard for me to find things for him to chew on that he likes. There are several Yorkie Talk Members that sell healthy chews for your dogs. While these did not work for me because Milo is not a chewer, they seem to work for everyone lese and Ryan is a YT member you might want to give them a try. only treats I give or buddy biscuits (itty bitty) they have several favors mine like the roasted chicken favor here the site: http://www.cloudstar.com/5DD044CB6F4...D7B43EEA4D407A also give merricks toothpicks they are not treats but chews those are the only two treats the yorkies get. my husband will sneak them a animals cracker once in awhile. |

Try Cherrios... they work awesome!!:thumbup: |
The best treats we've found are made by YT member Chattiesmom. They are called Yorkie Yummies. My dogs will do ANYTHING for a yorkie yummie! It's really a catastrophe when we run out! Honestly, they LOVE them! |

If you have a PETCO near you they have a great supply of healthy treats. Mine love Zukes brand treats... they have ones that are teeny tiny morsels perfect for training. Wellness Bites are also a big hit with a lot of dogs. You can also get things like bully sticks... a very safe chew. At PetSmart the best treats I have found are the itty bittys someone was talking about earlier. And these dehydrated sweet potatoes that beefeater brand makes... mine go nuts for them and since it is a fairly large piece it takes them a few minutes to eat them. Hope this helps! |
We give Shelby & Seymour crunchie treats. We get Itty bitty Buddy biscuits (the sweet potato madness flavor). They are really little.... perfect size. They are also ALL NATURAL!!! Made by Cloud star. ( www.cloudstar.com ) We also give them "Good Dog" dog treats. These too come in little sizes!! They come in Blueberry cobbler and apple dumpling and peanut butter & jelly. Shelby & Seymour LOVE the apple dumplin the best. They are made by sojourner farms. Also ALL natural!!!! ( All Natural Dog Food and Natural Dog Treats by Sojourner Farms ) We buy them at a pet bakery/store locally, but thought I would list the websites so you can find out if someone near you sells them.... or so you can order them! They are crunchy, but kinda "airy" so they are easy for them to chew..... (some treats can be so ridiculouly hard). |
Wellness Pure Rewards Jerky Treats...minimal ingredients, grainfree, and when torn off, the pouch lasts a long time. A little costly, but anything for my pup. For Dogs - Treats - Pure Rewards Smiles- Snick & Viv |

Someone suggested these to me while Lucy is being evaluated for liver problems. Hey, it might have been you! Anyway, she loves the plain cheerios and will sit, lay down, or try and shove my Westie out of the way so she can get some!:) So happy I found something other than pupparoni that she likes. I might try some of the sweet potato, etc ones that I see on this threat. They sound low protein as well. |
Zuke's Mini Naturals -- very small (I think 2 Calories each), but sometimes I cut them into even smaller pieces. They love all of the flavors -- chicken, peanut butter, and salmon. |
I give Bailey the following treats: - Pure Bites Freeze Dried Beef Liver Dog Treat (good source of protein and it contains only one ingredient (liver) so I know exactly whats in it) - Nature's Medley by Vitalife Duck and Sweet Potato - Natural Balance Dick Van Patten's Healthy Bones Dog Treats with Turkey, Oatmeal and Cranberries (it is a cookie type of treat, Oatmeal is great for their coats) Ingredients: ground oats, Ground Barley, Rye, Turkey Meal, Turkey, Oatmeal, Cranberries, Canola Oil, Mixed Tocopherols Also I use as a treat: - Small bits of celery, carrot, and apple (with skin because it has fiber, which is good) As a chew I give Bailey Roll Over Chicken Wrapped Porkhide Twists (it says on the package that it is 100% digestible, but I am still kind of skeptical of it) Anyone had any experience with the Roll Over chews??? |
Cheerios! Yuppers!!:D I also do frozen green beans and carrots. They love them! |

Buddy Biscuits are Jax' favorite treat! |
I like all of the treats from Healthy Pet Net but my fav's are the dental cookies, the reward treats and the pork bones (safe AND digestible!!!) I give them to my adult and puppies and send them home with some too! You can read about them here: TrilogyOnline's Dog Treats) |
Best treats to give would be "real" treats such as dried fruits, fresh apples, tangerines, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, fiber cereal, frozen green beans, fresh carrots and so forth. I also make their bones. |

I read that giving your dog a small cut up square of cheese was equivalent to you eating a hamburger. |
Well there are lots of folks out there that claim to be experts on dog nutrition, but I have yet to find any long term studies. Anyway, I go by what my dogs can and can't eat, what they do well on and what they don't. I've been home cooking for over 51 years, and thru it all, I'm still learning. Each dog can be as different as humans when it comes to allergies and the like. Not much different than having kids to raise. We give them what we know is good for them and also safe. Trial and error so to speak. I've never had a dog get sick or die from eating anything I have given them. ;) |

Thanks, I ordered a sampler (assorted pack) of Yorkie Yummies for Winston to try. He loves all kinds of treats, so I don't see there being a problem with him not liking them. I also want to order Buddy Biscuits too. |
i give mine lots of carrots i chop them in small bite size pieces and put a bit of califlower with them and they love it (its also fat free) there is also a new one i have found it is called beefeaters Sweet Potato snacks .our one little one lexi will try and roll the container around on the floor hopeing it will magicaly open it is so cute. and there is on that i make and they go nuts for it 8ozs of liver beef or pork 1 head of garlic peeled 1/2 cup of water or so 1 egg 1/2 cup of self rising flour 1/2 tsp baking powder mix all together in a blender (it looks awful and is really kind of sticky i put mine in a pyrex glass pan with lid and microwave for 7 mins flip it over and cook for another 7 mins or so i then put it outside or in the fridge to cool i slice it in small pieces and put some in fridge and i freze the rest and bring it out as needed i have never had 4 sets of eyes waiting for the microwave to be done but they just lay and wait i hope you try it |
