Looking for a good, all natural dry dog food
 
I would like to know what some of the better dry dog foods are. I don't want it to contain preservatives, ethoxyquin, or grain.

I have just concluded this search myself. I narrowed it down to Blue Buffalo for us. It believe it contains non of the things above and has real ingredients while leaving out a lot of the bad. I found it today at Petsmart and the price was reasonable. Not sure how it will work for us yet but you might want to add it to the list you research. It came highly recommended by a few YT members who have used it. I haven't heard anything that bad on it but I am sure there are those who have their opinions!:) At this point it is the best for us.

Im feeding EVO venison wet (a few teaspoons a day) and Acana grasslands. Both are grain free and made by great companies..:)..

If i were feeding kibble I would feed one of the following: Natural Balance (each of their bags goes through quality control- you can enter the bar code in and see how your bag did and what tests it went through. hard to say if that is true but it is more than any other company is willing to do)

Nature's Variety. I love their kibble- they also do raw food and freeze dried.

Fromms- I used to use this before i changed Layla to home cooking. I think it is a good food. We also used Orijen.

My dogs like Wellness for small breeds. Suppose to be a pretty good food.:animal36

According to your specifications, IM MY OPINION, the best kibbles include:
-Orijen
-Acana (comes in 3 grainfree formulas-Prairie, Grasslands, and Pacifica)
-Innova Evo (3 formulas-chicken, red meat, and fish)
-FROMM Surf & Turf
-Wellness CORE

Ps...we feed Acana and I have never seen our pup Snickers eat so well!! He loves it!

But, sadly, Natural Balance does contain Ethoxyquin. :(

Personal opinion...the highest quality kibble(s) are Orijen and ACANA.

We switched to Acana grain-free a few months ago and so far it's going GREAT!!! :thumbup::thumbup:

I did some research & decided on Blue Buffalo. It had a high rating - there's a list somewhere here on yorkietalk. It's natural, holistic food - doesn't contain those incredients you mentioned. Also, I can buy it at Petsmart & don't have to order it online. Of course it costs more, but all natural foods do.

I just wanted to point out a rating of the brand of kibble you use.:) It is entirely your choice to feed what you wish to your pup, but I did want to point out, that Biljac is not a very healthy food to feed. It has some controversial ingredients, but if it is working for your pup--GREAT:).

I'm feeding my 4months old Royal Canin Yorkshire Junior. I suspect it's giving him dry skin *poor thing* Am very happy to find out Acana and Orijen are available in this country but the pet shops here don't carry them :mad:

Which one would you recommend for my puppy? I'm a new Yorkie mommy and I really want to switch his food.

Both of these are highly recommended foods. I think you would do great with either.:)

Orijen is higher in protien and I have read that alot of protien for a puppy may not be good, :confused: but you may want to research more. Im not sure if they make a puppy formula yet. Im feeding Acana grasslands (grain free) and my dogs are doing wonderful, my dogs do better on a lower protien food and Acana is about 32 to 33 percent. The only down fall is the peices are big and I need to cut them in half for my adult dogs, which are 9 and 4 pounds so Im sure you will def. have to cut them for a puppy. I havent tried any of Acana's regular forumlas but I do beleive they too are highly recommended and come in a puppy formula.

Does anyone know if the Acana Small Bits is grain free? I've been trying to find out...I'm obviously not looking in the right place.....:confused:

Orijen makes a puppy formula, Acana is all life stages so you can feed Acana at anytime. Acana's grainfree formulas sadly do not come in small bites, I use a nut cracker and break the small disks apart into about 2-3 pieces and Snickers does well with it. Actually he adores his food, can't get enough.

The Acana which contains grain comes in a small breed puppy as well as a small breed adult. Check em out here. You can call them or email them and see if the small breed formulas are in small bites. IM MY OPINION, Acana is one of the best kibbles out there.

Does the Fromms have small kibbles? I hate cutting kibbles....Which flavor did yours like best?

All of Fromm's is pretty small so you can't go wrong with their formulas. Their grainfree (Surf N Turf) is tiny kibbles, great for small yorkie mouths. And Fromm is a great company as well:)!!

Jackson is currently eating Fromm Surf and Turf, but he also eats
Nature's Variety Instinct and has eaten Merrick's Before Grain in
the past and done well on it. Fromm is our favorite so far! :thumbup:

I feed Nature's Variety Prairie line (they like the Beef & Brown Rice and the Lamb & Oatmeal best).
Also I feed Acana (Provincial line-Prairie and Grasslands.
Right at this time they are on Acana Prairie :thumbup:
I like to give them variety so after each bag I have been switching between these.

We just started on Acana small breed and both my yorkies LOVE it, they finish the whole bowl as before they was always a bit of food left. We've only been on it since Saturday but already I can see they just want to play all day long with each other. lol

if your dog has pancreaitis (like my Layla does) you need to find a food that is VERY low in fat. Many dog food brands have a low fat variety- so just check the percentage on the back of the bag. I think somewhere around 6-8% is ok- but i'm not totally sure on that number.

Can I give blue buffalo to my baby that has pancreatitis. Will it be safe for her to eat this food. I will like to try something natural since her Vet put her on science i/d and I honestly dont like the ingredients.
