a little bit frustrated! honestly, i don't really know what dog food to feed anymore. it seems like there are so many bad things, & information coming out about pet foods. i am now learning about all these things/ingredients that are bad for our dogs, and the problems we are hearing about pet food processing plants. what are your thoughts? at this point i feel that it might be safer to start home-cooking. just so i know exactly what goes in the food i feed my dog. are you guys also feeling frustrated with all the information that we are learning about the pet foods? |
I hear your frustration. I have been lucky {knock on wood} that all mine have done so well on Wellness. If it wasn't for that, I would home cook as well. I do give mine fruits and vegetables as treats. |
I really love Fromm so far. I like that the company is family owned and operated and I really trust them & their ingredients. AND... my picky dog LOVES it. He's currently eating the Surf n' Turf formula. |
it is VERY overwhelming. I home cook myself- if you choose to go that way be sure you consult a dog nutritionist to make sure your diet is balanced. I agree with Britster that Fromm is a good food- I also like Natural Balance and Nature's Variety. |
I am also a fan of home cooking for my dogs and did so for the first five years of their lives. My two dogs are older (9) so we now do a combo of home cooked and commercial food. When I buy commercial food, I go with Merrick canned grammy's pot pie for the boys (Daisy is a liver shunt baby on a prescription diet and home cooked). But you're right - dog food is frustrating - it seems you find one you like and then there is some sort of issue that crops up. I dropped Wellness a while back after learning they were being sued for false and deceptive advertising. I did like it though! |
i was a homemade raw maker, then i found out more about Nature's Variety. same great balance of meats and veggies with eggs and oils, NO GRAIN at all, and it's easier for me personally than making up her food, even though what i made was VERY easy as well, i can't give her the variety of meat and egg proteins that this already made stuff has. i LOVE it so far. |

I fed him the Chicken a la Veg flavor at lunch and dinner, mixed with his old Natural Balance. We also opened our sample of Surf 'n Turf to use for training treats. He couldn't get enough and kept begging for more, throwing his kong at me. Everything seems to agree with him and it moved through his system perfectly. ;) Thank you Britster for the recommendation! |
I've been feeding Acana and my two love it!! |
I started my girls on Natural Balance Fish and Sweet Potatoe after seeking advice on YT. My girls went NUTS for it. Changing to this did not cause any upset to their digestive system and they seem to have more energy. Have a Great day! |

I am not against home cooking at all if done correctly; but I do want to add one thing. Nothing is foolproof anymore...even our foods are not always safe. This is not a post against the topic! |

i know your post wasn't against the topic, and i agree that our food is not safe anymore either, that is why i am especially concerned, because i feed raw. :( but fortunately, i just recently discovered an organic line of pre-made raw diet for dogs. (everything is organic, instead of the other pre-made raw where only the vegetables are organic) i will feel a little bit safer with organic meats for my dog. |
ITA! It's hard to know what is right for our puppers...With my first dog, I wasn't informed & bought her first bag of food from PetSmart. Since then, I've tried to read about the topic and learn more about dog nutrition. Both my foster Yorkie & mini dachshund love Innova Evo. I tried Solid Gold & my dachshund ate it, but Sophie (the foster Yorkie) turned her nose up at it! BTW, my dachshund eats all food...:D For a while, I made food for my mini dachshund (eggs, chicken, green beans, chicken broth, carrots) and she LOVED it. I made big batches & froze it. I would zap it in the microwave for each meal. It just got expensive & time-consuming, so we went back to Evo. I've thought about going raw, but I get an icky feeling about feeding that to my furbabies! I know it's very good for them... |

Defensive? What are you saying? All I was saying is that nothing seems safe anymore. Sad state of affairs. |
