Question about food I feed my Yorkies Canidae. What do you guys think about this food? What do you guys feed your babies. 5 years ago when i got Hendrix my vet told me that Canidae was the best food I could feed him, but I know there are so many great foods out now and I wonder if it still compares...... |
Well it's a good food BUT what formula are you feeding? Canidae's food is on the unsafe list for containing ethoxyquin. We discussed it on this thread here http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...dog-foods.html Sometime ethoxyquin is used only to preserve fish meal, BUT it can be used to preserve any type of animal fat, and is not required by law to have it listed in the ingredients on the package, because it is often added to the ingredients before they reach the manufacturers. I wouldn't trust any company that uses ethoxyquin as a preservative, whether it be in just one formula or all of them  I homecook, but I leave kibble out for my girls to nibble on (Petcurean). Why don't you check out the www.dogfoodanalysis.com website if you're considering changing foods. BTW, I like your avatar. "Mommy and Me" pics are THE BEST! |
I use the formula for all stages.... Does it make a difference?? |

It depends on what flavor/formula you are using. I think one of thier products doesnt contain the fish meal but I dont know off hand what that one is. I wont feed Canidae because it is made by diamond and they have just too many issues latetly. I have fed that food in the past and after a few months of using it, it stop agreeing with my dogs. It is a decent food, other than the use of that perservative. If your dog is doing good on it and you are comfortable feeding than continue to do so. :) :) |
I don't think it's a bad food but yes, like stated above, the ethoxyquin worries me so I stay away from Diamond products (where Canidae is made). I currently feed Fromm (Surf & Turf grain-free formula) and I feel really safe in what I'm feeding him, with the ingredients and the company behind them. Plus, he's a picky eater and he loves it! I also rotate with Nature's Variety Instinct. |
I recently went in search of new kibble for my dogs, a puppy and a senior. They were getting into one another's food, so I wanted to feed an All Life Stages formula. I went to the Lukes All Natural website and ordered a package of dog food samples. They pack a flat rate shipping box full of samples, and let you specify preferences (kibble size, adult, puppy, whatever). I asked them to send me as many ALS samples as possible, and fill in the rest of the space in the box with adult food samples. They even threw in some treat and shampoo samples, too. I know you can email the manufacturers directly to ask for free samples, but decided it was easier just to pay for it and get a lot of variety. I went through the samples and immediately took out any of the brands that might have ethoxyquin. There were four of them, all of them use Diamond as their contract manufacturer. Three of them -- Artemis, Canidae, and Taste of the Wild have all admitted that they preserve with ethoxyquin. The fourth was Natural Balance, and they have been very cagey, dancing around and not giving a direct answer as to whether their foods contain it or not. I think they said something to the effect that "they don't add it to their foods," but if their fish meal (or fat) supplier adds it, they don't have to list it as an ingredient -- because they didn't add it. I suspect that even though Diamond makes these four brands according to the formula of the individual brands, they probably are responsible for purchasing the individual ingredients, and therefore use the same fish meal supplier for all the brands. That left me with a lot of samples that were All Life Stages. Here is a list: Acana Grasslands Acana Prarie Before Grain (3 varieties -- Buffalo, Chicken, and Salmon) Evo (2 varieties -- Turkey & Chicken, Red Meat) Fromm (6 varieties - Salmon, Chicken, Duck & Sweet Potato, Pork & Applesauce, Surf and Turf, Whitefish and Potato) Innova Small Bites Nature's Variety (lots to choose from there, I think there are 5 varieties of Prairie and at least 2 of Instinct, not to mention the frozen raw choices) I didn't get any Natures Variety in the sample box, not sure why Right now I am feeding Nature's Variety Prairie, and they LOVE it, even my picky senior. My puppy went into a FRENZY when I first gave it to her. I like that I can switch between the 5 "flavors" without transitioning, so I'll be able to switch them up to prevent boredom. It is also coated with freeze dried raw food, so I like that as well. I'm also going to try out the Fromm, because they've got a lot of variety to keep things interesting. There may be more varieties/flavors of all the brands listed above. This should give you a good start if you're going to stick with ALS and want to avoid ethoxyquin. |

Recently made the switch from Nature's Recipe to Nature's Variety Just last Thursday, I made the swtich/transition from Nature's Recipe to Nature's Variety and my furbaby, Mocha LOVES it. I like having the option of rotating between flavors, frozen, and canned without having to transition everytime. Mocha eliminates less often as a result of eating this new food and has more energy. Being that he is only 4 months old, he's currently eating the prairie. When he's older I may switch to the Nature's Variety Instinct which is higher in protein and I was told that it may be too much protein for little tummies at this point, but we'll see. Btw, Mocha's coat looks great and he no longer has flaky skin. Good luck and happy holidays |
I received a sample and tried Maddie on it. She would not touch it. She is such a picky butt:p She only wants to eat TOTW. |
I was wondering about it my self. I am currently on Wellness. But heard good things about the Canidae. |
