| How much food to buy at once? Hello, I'm a brand new Yorkie owner, and I'm wondering how much dry kibble should I buy at one time? I searched through the threads and couldn't find a question like this, so I apologize if it's been asked and answered before. He's a four month old puppy that weighs 3.11 lbs. I plan to free feed - how long will an 8 lb. bag last me, approximately? Or should I buy a bigger bag to begin with?? Thanks so much, Debbie |

| Hi welcome to YT....I would buy the smallest bag possible, especially if it's a holistic food w/no preservatives...Before my Apple was on raw, I'd buy a 4 lb. bag, and about 1/2 way through, she'd stop eating it...If I bought another bag (same brand same flavor) she'd eat it...I finally decided that it was getting a little rancid from being opened and closed everyday (introducing air into the product daily)...If you can get you pup on a food that comes in 1, 2 or 3 lb. bags, I'd go for that... |

| Hi and Welcome to YorkieTalk!! I rotate foods, but when I buy the 6.6 pound bag of EVO or 4.4 lb Instinct etc., it lasts me a 2-3 months. My baby is about 6lbs. The only advantage to buying more at one time is that it's generally cheaper. I would definitely say that an 8lb bag will last you awhile. You might even want to freeze half of it so it doesn't get old. It will aslo depend a little bit on what you're feeding...higher quality kibble lasts longer bc they don't eat as much each day. Hope that helps. Last edited by AMD; 12-11-2009 at 08:03 AM. |

When you free feed, reverse measure, so you have an idea of the consumption. That is...measure and put 1 cup down, and 24 hours later measure, to see what is gone. That will give you an idea how long it will last. As for how long it will keep check the "best by..." date.

| Welcome...even with dry kibble, flying insects () can get into the kibble and it can lay eggs. Another reason I would not buy large large bags is it can go rancid due to the oils in it. Fresh is better than stale..

| I buy the smallest bag available, usually 5 pds, I do usually end up throwing the bottom part out and replacing it, it takes a good couple months to use it as I home cook as well

| I buy Wellness in the 15lb bag, but I have 6 yorkies, so it goes pretty fast.

I find the same to be true even with the small bag of Royal Canine 33 we have here. She loves a freshly opened bag, eats well through the majority of it (and I am a fanatic about sealing well) and then the last 1/4 or so she turns her nose up to. So small bags are better IMHO.

The other side of this also is that all the dead cats and dogs have been vaccinated and now you feeding this food to the dogs and then getting more vaccinations for your dog. I also believe this is an issue.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | You don't want to buy 8 lbs of any kind of food starting out. You may find that whatever brand you buy doesn't agree with him or he won't eat. Buy only small bags so you don't end up having to throw away good food because he can't eat it. It took me 3 different brands until I found the one that works with her... Wellness brand. Your pup looks really cute! Good luck & have fun!
