What "People Food" do you feed your Yorkies? I've been very cautious to not allow her to eat anything besides her very healthy diet. Now I would like to know what you ladies also feed your dogs beyond that. What's safe for them, what's good for them, what's just tasty for them! I've heard of Yogurt and Cottage Cheese. What else can we feed her as a "treat" ? I have almost 20 years of experience in cat nutrition...but as far as dogs go, I'm still learning a lot! Thanks ladies!!! :):D |
Yes, along with organic cottage cheese and plain organic yogurt, Rio eats baby carrots, apples, fuyu persimmons, pineapple, and bananas - all cut into bite size pieces. Please DO NOT FEED your dog grapes - poisonous to dogs! |
Great thread - I am anxious to read the responses. I am a new mommy, but will admit to occasionally giving Zoey fresh cooked chicken and raw carrot slivers (tho not too much carrot on one day or she gets loose stools). She is fed her Royal Canin 33 and gets Wellness puppy treats (in little pieces) for training. ~Denise |
Molly has to lose some weight so i have cut down on her kibble and add some cooked veg. peas, carrots, green beans, celery, cauli, broccoli..she eats it all...and she is slowly but surely losing weight. |
I do alot of fresh fruits and veggies. No grapes, raisins, corn, onions just to name a few. Mine really love bananas and oranges. |
CHERRIOS! Also an occassional egg. Some cheese. Lowfat cottage cheese as mentioned. Boiled boneless, skinless chicken breast. That's about it. :) |
Mine love frozen watermellon chunks in the summer, we also do carrots, steamed greenbeans, apple chunks, dried cranberries, I used to make a pumpkin treat that they loved, steamed whitefish for Copper, they like sweetpotato (cooked and mashed), and they also get a little cheese here and there:) |
Sometimes I give Toby a "bite" of grilled chicken but I try to stick to just dog food. I give him Royal Canin Yorkie and Benefull. One time I caught my mother-in-law giving him choclate and well...let's just say she NEVER did that again.:D |
I give mine some bites of banana and cheerios in the morning. In the evening their favorite bedtime treat is egg noodles. I boil up a bunch of egg noodles (made with egg yolk) and after they are cooked and drained I add a teaspoon of coconut oil to coat them. After they have cool just a little I then sprinkle them with parmesan cheese. Mine go crazy over this. I keep them in a airtight container in the refrigerator. Mine also enjoy bites of steamed broccoli, squash, green beans and sweet potato. |
When I made rice, I usually make a little extra to blend in with their kibble. All the dogs love it. Peanut butter is another favourite, but a rare treat. Occationally, I'll give her a little taste of chicken, beef, pork... whatever meat we're eating. Lexi only gets a very TINY piece as she can get tummy aches easily. |
Cooked chicken, rice and veg, plain cooked meatballs if we're have spagetti and meatballs, a little bit of egg now and then, tiny bit of ice cream on hot days, lillte bit of cheese from daddy's smoko sandwich if he say's pretty please and Daddy gives him small bits of human biscuits while Mums not looking |
Mine don't eat any type of dog food. I cook for them, so that means they eat just about anything and everything. |

Jackson eats pretty much anything I do minus the really bad fatty junk stuff. Chicken, steak, any meat we eat for dinner, I always save him some plain meat w/o seasonings etc. He loves cheerios and animal crackers. He likes yogurt too. Spaghetti noodles. etc. When I say this... it's not like he gets a whole bowl full or anything. I just give him a few little pieces. |
I give Penny baked kibble I found at a dog bakery in downtown chicago. You can actually watch them make the kibble in the store which is very cool!:D I feed her three meals a day which include her baked kibble, tuna for protein, and cheese for calcium. For dogs who are teething (Penny is still teething) give them cold baby carrots from the fridge. This will sooth their gums, provide a tasty treat, and is healthy for them too. She also gets plain vanilla yogurt from Whole Foods, some scrammbled eggs every once in a while, maybe a small piece of cooked chicken, and an apple slice.:) |
I have a Yorkie, Maltese, and an English Cocker Spaniel and none of them eat 'people' food. If they get sick that is different, then I usually cook up a chicken breast and make some rice for them. But for treats and normal everyday food, they have dog food and dog treats. |
I homecook for Missy so I don't really give her treats. I figure that's a treat in itself. When I was potty training her though, I used 100% dehydrated fish. |
Some of the reasons I do not believe in feeding dog food. Closer Look At A Rendering Plant Dead Cats And Dogs Used To Make Pet Food Buy the book FOOD PETS DIE FOR by Ann N. Martin. She had the dog food industry in and out of court for over seven years. She has undercover people gaining first hand information about how pet food is made. |
Mine get only dog food, except for when hubby gives them some bits of sugar free popsicles, which he knows that I don't like. We had 3 other dogs before these 2 and they were given all kinds of people food, table scraps, junk food, etc. and they all weight more than they were supose to weigh. So this time I want them to be as healthy as possible and no begging when we eat our foods. |
My boy gets all sorts of fruits and vegetables like apples, oranges, bananas, green beans, broccoli, and carrots. We also give him plain grilled chicken or beef along with cottage cheese, yogurt, and cheese. And I can’t forget scrambled eggs. :) |

apples and baby carrots, and that's completely it for the most part. Every once in a while (like, once every couple months or so), they'll get a little piece of chicken or beef - like A bite. Joey's tummy is quite sensitive, and Tank just doesn't need people food, so we limit it. I swear begging is just something dogs do - I don't feed off my plate or anything (in fact, my boys NEVER touch a dish or utensil being used by humans - they know it's a big no-no), yet they still know to stand there and look cute in hopes of a treat...spoiled little brats... |
What about baby food? Someone mentioned that to me and I wondered if anyone feeds it to their baby... |

This is why I even homecook for my cat (and I'm not a fan of cats, she's my daughters). After doing my research when I got Missy, there is no way that I can feed dog/cat food to our pets. I'll take the time to prepare it myself, adding the proper supplements of course. My 2nd choice to homecooking would be raw. :) |
Banana, lean hambug and rice, chicken and rice, lean meats, mashed potatatoes, lean meats, eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese,a tiny bit of just abouy everything except stuff with alot of onion and chocolate ALL IN MODERATION! |

Why are grapes bad for them? It's probably bad, I had the mentality that if it's natural and we eat it, then they can as well. I will def be more cautious in the future |
1 Attachment(s) Soph gets a lot of the same things we eat. Tiny bites of steak and chicken (minus skin). She loves when I make veggie beef stew because she knows that she gets all of the carrots. And she LOOOOVES spaghetti Attachment 304579 |

I use recipes that were provided by my vet. An example of one of the recipes would be (just off the top of my head) poultry, rice, canned sardines, oil, salt substitute, salt, bonemeal powder, and vitamin/mineral powder. I just make up big batches, and freeze it in portions. I find it so easy, and inexpensive as well. My girls eat such a small amount, it's really no big deal. If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me. |
