Toby has Legge Perths - new pup was due in 2 weeks?
 
Toby was diagnosed with Legge Perths today. His hip is in very bad shape. The vet is giving him pain meds for a week to see if it will start to heal it self. He say its very unlikely, but can happen.

Otherwise we are going to have to go down the surgery route, probably in the next few weeks.

I was due to get Maisie in two weeks time.

I am a bit worried it will be too much dealing with post op Toby and new puppy.

What do you think?

Is it best to wait for a few months, and get a different pup?

Leggs Perthes will never heal itself. Surgey will be required.....But, after surgery he'll be good as new.

I don't think a new puppy and Toby's Post Op will be that difficult to handle.

I would be afraid they wouldnt individually get the attention they need. But Toby always feels quite sorry for himself so it might take his mind off it.

I have to let the lady know in 2 days time whether I still want the pup.

Now I'm a breeder so, I'll say this with tongue in cheek. If I can handle 5 puppies, their mothers and my other yorkies. You can handle post op Toby and a new pup. Toby's post op will probably only keep him down for a couple of weeks. If you don't get the pup, you'll probably kick yourself later.

I agree, especially if you really like this pup. You can handle both, the vet is probably going to want Toby confined to his crate for the first week anyhow. How did the vet diagnose the LP? Did he do an x-ray to confirm Toby's LP? LP is genetic which means you need to contact Toby's breeder and let her know that one of her dogs is carrying the gene.

Do you think Toby might overdo it trying to keep up with a pup, or that the pup might annoy him?

I work 3 days a week. At the minute Toby goes to an Aunts house when I am away, but they have a lively Sheltie pup and he plays too rough with Toby now that he has the injury. So Toby and the new pup would be at home, with a few visits, on the days I am at work. I was intending to take a week off when I got the new pup, which will probably now be the operation week.

Yes, he was xrayed.

I contacted the breeder. She says there has been none of this in her lines. The sire was a stud.

So sorry to hear about Toby. Piper was diagnosed with Legg Perthes last December. She had her surgery Dec. 29 with no problems. Within 3 months she was back 100%. As for getting a new puppy I think I would wait until Toby is healed. The first few weeks Piper was in pain, walked on 3 legs and wasn't her playful self. You are going to have to give Toby that extra attention while he is recovering from major surgery. Plus most dogs get a little jealous when a new puppy is brought into a family. I think you have to get Toby healthy first and then afterwards get your new puppy. Remember a new puppy takes a lot of work and your time.

Excellent point, especially since you work outside the home and will only be able to take 1 week off. I wish you the best with whatever you choose to do, and I hope Toby is back to 100% quickly.

Thats what I was thinking too.

Its such bad timing. But then as my husband said, what if we had just gotten the pup. We would have to cope.

At the minute Toby is crying, and walking around, not knowing what to do with himself. And that is just with anesthestic and 2 teeth out.

I hate seeing him like that.

LP more often than not is genetic. However, it can be caused by the breeder during the whelping process....

I had a pup that required hip surgery......2 other yorkies in the house and I worked. I did have someone watching him while I was working....but, we did weather through it.

I guess it would depend on how easy it would be to find another Yorkie if you waited.
Zaccheus had surgery for his LP, and was running around within a few weeks. He is 100% now.

I am sorry to hear about your baby. I have heard the surgery fixes them all up and the will be a good as perfect. As far as getting a puppy now or waiting hum? I guess it would be a hard call. I had a rescue that had been hit by a car and he was recovering from 6 broken ribs, a collapsed lung and a fractured hip. I had to keep him separated from the others and it was really hard on him. Once he had surgery we again had to keep him separated. He really wanted to play and be with the others but I had to keep him safe so he would not worsen his condition.

I guess you will need to follow your heart. I am sure it can be done if you are willing to be deligent and keep them separate and giving them the much needed individual time. It will only be temporary and then they can be together. How badly do you want this little girl? Remember if there is a will......There is a way. It really up to you and follow your instincts and it will be the right decsion. Good luck.

Interesting.... I didn't know that LP could be caused by the breeder during the whelping process... Pardon my stupidity, but how? Would it be due to assisting the female with a breech pup?
