How often do you feed your Yorkie?? Nolee is 2 1/2 years old and I still feed him twice a day. When I was at my vets office, I was told after a year old, they should be fed only one time a day. What do you do? |
Mine are free fed at all ages works for me |
for the most part Gizmo free feeds but I take his daily serving and cut it in half and give him half in the morning and half at night. It works well at our house. |
Sasha just turned 2 and I used to only feed her once a day. About a week ago, I split her meal up and now I feed her twice a day. For some reason, she never wants to eat in the morning, so now she gets lunch and dinner. I hated seeing her go all day without eating anything. I don't think there's anything wrong with feeding twice a day no matter what their age is. |
Some vets do say that, but I think they will have a problem proving that it is really best. Yorkies are so tiny. It is really best to feed them more than once. IMO, it is better for bigger dogs also. Ellie is fed 3x daily. |
Jackson has kibble down all day. He will go over and just have a few pieces every now and then throughout the day. Then I will give him his "dinner" once a day, which is kibble mixed in with either wet dog food, or chicken breast. So, sort of once a day fed, sort of free fed. He doesn't over-eat so the free feeding works. |

We do one feeding in the morning and one at dinner (it works out to be about 7:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.) I did 3 feedings a day when the girls were younger but switched them to 2 a day when they were over a year old. However, my vet mentioned in passing that even two feedings a day is a long time for such small dogs to go without food. I wouldn't be opposed to giving a tiny snack in the afternoon--except one of my girls is such a porker! I swear, she looks at food and gains weight! |

I also meant to add that with yorkies sometimes if they play really hard then their sugar may get kinda low and without having food to free feed from morning and afternoon when they need it might cause some problems. When we first got Gizmo we used to give him nutrical to sorta boost him up because he would just play so hard he would drain his energy and sugar and if he still wanted to play and not eat we could supplement him with the nutrical to keep him from getting really low. |

Yorkies are too small to store up a huge amount of sugar. It's one good reason to feed at least twice. |
one big meal a day is usually ver harsh on their stomach; some dogs can take it and some can't ; usually they are fed twice daily; however my dog has sensitive stomach and the vet told me to feed her 4 small meals daily |
feeding my yorkie :)I was feeding Elvis (4 yrs old) once a day- then one morning he has large saliva drops around his mouth- it scared me half to death- called the breeder and he said his stomach is empty and has turned inside out- now I feed him 8AM and 5 PM- he gets 1/4th candidae and chicken breast mixed with carrots- he is overweight(11-12 lbs) but very healthy! |
We give ours some canned in the morning and leave the kibble out all day |
lexi eats twice a day.. breakfast and dinner, and dental chew after dinner. |

I would just put whatever amount your food says and leave it down and see how he does with it.. |
I feed Yogi twice a day (in the morning and in the evening). He gets a little snack when I come home for lunch and a snack in the evening as well. |
I was feeding Stella twice a day (breakfast and early dinner) but she started to throw up (not food but bile I guess) around 5 am in the mornings about once a week. So I now feed her 3 times a day small meals and she hasn't been sick since. Now finding a food that she wants to eat is another story! |
I feed Polo normally two times a day once in the morning and after his walk in the evening. But sometimes I feed him 3 small meals a day because Polo's pretty active at 2 1/2 miles walking everyday estimated 14 miles or more a week So I really think it depends on what age you dog is and how active they are |
Thanks everyone! I will continue to feed Nolee twice a day! Your comments have helped alot!! |
We tried to feed Teddy twice a day, but he has had stomach issues, and food allergies, so we ended up feeding him 4 times a day, we have tried to go to 3 but he hates it, and so does his tummy, as he has had many allergy issues, and sickness if he has too longer gaps between meals, we have no problem in him having 4 meals a day, we are used to it now, as he has been this way for 2 out of his 3 years. I think it is a case of finding what is best for your Yorkie, although I do agree with others comments on once a day maybe a little harder for a Yorkie than some bigger breeds, although some are fine, it's a case of knowing what yours does better with. We make sure we don't over feed though having 4 meals a day. We divide his daily amount of kibble into 4 equal portions. |

I guess if you have olne that would gobble it all down at one time, then you would have to limit their food. But mine nibble several times a day. the food is put out in the morning, when it's gone it's gone. So I guess you could say I feed once a day all day long. :D If it is not gone by 7pm then I pick it up. |
Winston has his kibble down 24/7, which he nibbles on throughout the day and night. But he has to eat often, to prevent hypoglycemic/seizures, so he is actually fed 6 small meals a day. He is a tad overweight, I'd like to be able to decrease his feedings...but on those days when he really runs and plays hard he has to eat often, he just has to. |
Oliver has kibble available all day...whatever he doesn't eat the labs scarf up on the way to bed at night or sometimes the cat will eat it (he's on a fat kitty diet and is not real happy about it so he's not real picky these days) Oliver gets a fresh start the next morning no matter what :D I also treat him with raw food throughout the day ... |
Each dog gets fed according to size and age. Whether they're showing or not. Pregnant or nursing. Some twice a day. Some 3 times a day. Pregnant moms 3 or 4 times a day. Nursing moms 5 times a day. Pups have kibbles down all day, but are fed 4 times a day. Show dogs are fed 3 times a day, due to the pace of traveling and training. |
twice, i lkied free feeding better though, i felt they were calmer at meal time, but one of them is a little overweight so vet recommended this |

I free feed my little 6 mo old Gidget and it works for her. Some days she eats more than other days. I put out 1/3 c. dry Eukanuba in the morning. Some days she eats it all and other days she doesn't. My first Yorkie, Teddy, died when he was 14 and he did much better on free feeding after the first 4 months. He wasn't a big eater. Sometimes it took him 2 days to finish the 1/3 c but he was very healthy and a perfect adult weight (5 lbs.). Your baby will let you know what is best. |
