Default hopefull advice from nutrition guy

There was a dog nutrition guy working in the Pet Smart today and I told him about Tommy's dander problems. I told him how the breeder raises all her dogs on that crappy Beneful including mums to be and puppies etc.

I told him Tommy is now on Performatrin puppy food and he said that was not good either as it was not breed specific. He said he is still not getting what he needs.

He has recommended Royal Canin small breed puppy food as the best he can have and it will help his coat and dander issues. So we start again.

I am at my wits end with this allergy I have to Tommy and I hope this food will help his skin and coat. If I cant get this problem fixed I wont be able to keep him.

I have heard that Royal Canin is not good for dogs with skin conditions. Often times the skin problems are due to allergies to corn and that is one of the main ingredients in RC. You might want to try a grain free formula - Natural Balance (can be found at PetCo) has several allergy formulas and have a line of products that have limited ingredients for this reason. They also offer samples of all of their foods. I got several samples from PetCo.

Hope this helps.

Royal canin isnt good for dogs with allergies. It has corn in it and even some dogs that dont have extensive allergy problems can have problems with the food

Have you spent any time on this website? It might help you through this problem and you can also pay to have individual work done.

The Dog Food Project - How does your Dog Food Brand compare?

I agree with everyone else about Royal Canin...corn doesn't help

I have one with allergies and have her on California Natural Lamb and rice, or you may want to try a fish based one. Good luck

Hate to say it, but people at Petsmart generally don't know what they're talking about! lol. RC is not good for allergies and Performitrin Ultra is a much better food. You don't need a breed specific food.

I think the OP has the allergy, not the Yorkie.

How old is Tommy? If he is under a year old he is blowing his puppy coat and he can shed and have dry skin from that, winter or cold weather will also give him dry skin.

Do you have a supplement called 'Derm Caps' in Canada? If so, I would try that.

Royal Canin is not a good food...take a little time and visit the link livingdustmops provided and see if you can find something more suitable from their list.

Good luck, I hope you find a resolution to your problem.

This guy was there to talk to people about dog nutrition etc. He doesn not work for Pet Smart every day.Tommy doesnt have an allergy as far as I know. He does not scratch etc.

I am the one with the allergy to him. I am trying to find a food that will stop his dander that I am allergic to.

Thanks for all the replys.

Tommy is about 13 weeks old. The food I have been giving him is a puppy food and no corn in it but he still has the dander. I give him oil and also brewers yeast with omega three chew tabs for dogs 1/2 a pill. I brush him and bathe him once a week The weather here has just started to get colder but has been very rainy and damp so far.

I havent seen Derma Caps but will look into it.

if he is blowing his puppy coat and this is the reason for the dander then that is good news for me

You know, that is strange that he has dander. Yorkie are said to be the hypoallergenic dogs becuase they DON'T have dander and don't shed. Maybe he has an allergy to another ingredient in his food causing the skin problems. I have heard from other yorkie owners that allergies to foods cause itching and other skin conditions. Maybe change the protein source? I have heard that sometimes chicken or lamb could be the source.

My husband is deathly allergic to dogs - that is why we chose a yorkie. They are the only dog he can be around. I wouldn't give up yet...there has to be a solution!

If he were mine...and I'm no expert, just giving an opinion here. I would get him on a great puppy food like Innova or Fromm's or something of that category...I would get rid of the other supplements and only use the Derm Caps...the oil in them will help with his coat and you won't need to use them very long and once you have him on a great food you won't need all the extra supplements. My groomer instructed me to brush daily and bathe every other week...bathing every week can dry out their hair and skin only making the problem worse. When my boys were young I used the Derm Caps and it worked wonders almost immediately...it wasn't dander because Yorkies don't have that...it was just dry skin either from weather or the cheap food the breeder had them on. Once I got them on a great food with the Derm Caps their coats changed drastically within a short period of time. Once the puppy coat is gone you will see a huge difference in his coat and most likely your allergies but he can blow his coat for several months yet so you may have to hang in there for a while...but...it will be more than worth it!

If you can't find Derm Caps, another great product a lot of YT'rs use is Ark Naturals Royal Coat. YT member AMD sells it on her website www.westbrook.com. If you combine a good supplement like this to a healthy diet, his dander should go away soon.

We use Royal Canin and are happy with it, but I wouldn't pay too much attention to what Pet Store workers have to say. I don't think it's an allergy, food allergies usually don't show up on a puppy, and most dogs are NOT allergic to corn, its called a common allergen because it's in so many foods not because of the number of dogs allergic to it. What do you mean by dander? If your dog is showing white flakey skin, it can be that you are using a too harsh shampoo, not rinsing thoroughly and not using a conditioner. Remember conditioners are helpful, because they condition the skin as well as the hair. I really believe the Biogroom Shampoo is one of the best shampoos for Yorkies, you can get a free sample packet, by requesting one on this website under "contact us." Don't forget the products are very concentrated and you MUST dilute them. Bio-Groom - Exceptional Pet Care Products for Over 30 Years

Thanks so everyone for all the helpfull replys and advice. I am going to look into the dog food and the supplement suggested on here. I am not sure if Innova or Derma Caps are in Canada but will certainly look into it.I wanted to wait till after the thanksgiving weekend was over.

I use a dog dander shampoo that is supposed to be gentle but maybe need a different one like suggested here.. I have used the dog wipes to just on his coat as I dont want to dry out his skin.

We have not had him even a full month yet and he was eating Beneful and his mother was eating Beneful long before he was conceived so maybe that is what is wrong.

Seems he has this white powdery stuff all over him. It is not dustIt comes from him and he has it all through his coat but the skin does not look flakey at all.Jackson never had this problem but different breeder and different food.

Thanks so much .with all this support I dont feel so alone with this problem so wont give up easily. It just gets me down sometimes.
